Gripe of the Day: Customer Support

I hate customer support.

I had to call AT&T today because my cell phone is getting spammed with stupid text messages telling me all these wonderful videos I can go watch. At three o'clock in the morning. Did I mention I'm getting charged for each of these messages because I'm not on any sort of text message plan?

So they have this horrible voice activated system...I went around in circles with that for five minutes before it finally realized I wanted customer support. I was so happy that I yelled "bingo!" into the phone...and it promptly redirected me to the ringtone section.

Grrr. They couldn't do anything other than reimburse my account anyway, and I'm pretty sure they didn't quite get that right either...but there was no way I was calling back again...

Komitadjie 10-19-2007 09:41 PM

I doubt you get charged for them if you just delete them in the inbox without opening them. That's how my plan works, anyway, I get quite a bit of text-spam too.

My phone doesn't let me delete anything without opening it first...and it charges me automatically whenever I receive anything. :| It's just a cheap-o piece of crap...I got it for $20; I guess I can't expect too much.

Man I'm going to sound like an old person. (I'm not. xD)
I refuse to get a cell phone because everyone I know has been dicked around at some point by their provider.

I really hate it when big companies, who you know can afford it, have pre-recored customer service. Oh and try calling a government hot-line in the U.S. for taxes or something. Talk about sitting on the phone for an hour.

Komitadjie 10-19-2007 09:50 PM

Wow, that sucks, Brain! I have Verizon, and they tend to keep the jerking-around to a minimum, thank god.

You don't sound old...you sound lucky that you don't need one. ^^

Oh God don't get me started on the government...I've had to call on behalf of the company I work for on more than once occasion, and I couldn't decide afterwards if I was more homicidal or suicidal.

Komitadjie 10-19-2007 09:51 PM

When in doubt, go with homicide. xD

I did have Verizon for awhile, but I couldn't stand their pay-as-you-go plan (I refuse to sign a contract at the moment)...I'd have to wait around for ages at their stupid kiosk to add more minutes to my phone, and they charged me a dollar a day regardless of whether or not I actually used the damn phone (there was a time when I was only using it two or three times a week; now I seem to have acquired a long string of people who like to bug me). I'm trying out AT&T for awhile, although honestly, I'm not terribly impressed...

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 09:53 PM

Bah, that's how most cell phone carriers are.

I don't call customer support.

I march my butt down to talk with a real person. I'm more annoying that way. And I figure that since they're gonna give me crappy help, then they can just deal with me being annoying.

That's how Verizon works, anyway.

I hate Verizon. I really do. But that's my provider until my contract is up. D=

XD You can expect to start hearing about a new serial killer then...one who's only interested in customer support creators. Some moron must've come up with these automated answering systems...so I'll have to start there. :D

They do give crappy help, don't they?

I had to go see a Dell representative on Wednesday night because my AC adapter is emitting a high-pitched whine and it only seems to be working if I twist it around enough. I was hoping they could sell me a replacement, but the guy just gave me a tech support number. I've already tried to call Dell in the past about replacing my laptop screen (it's got a huge stripe of lines running down one side and it's getting worse), and they wouldn't even let me speak to someone until I paid $50 to renew my warranty...and there was no guarantee they could even help me. I started bitching at this Dell guy at the mall that every time I call their tech support they want to charge me money to speak to some underpaid bastard in India who can't even speak English, so he finally gave me a direct line...though I haven't tried it yet, so we'll see...

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 10:03 PM

Daaang. I've hear stories about Dell, but that's awful. D=

Usually when I need tech help, I just call my uncle. Cause he's like a god with technology.

Did you renew your warranty, then? Cause if you did, they should have to just send you the replacement parts.

Grr...I hate customer service! I was just reminded of that. xD

Yay for threads like these?

No, I didn't want to fork over the $50...I'm pretty sure they'd still want to charge me for the replacement, and my company is allegedly buying me a new laptop soon since this one got busted up on the job...

Tech-savvy uncles are a good thing to have. XD I can fix most things on my own; I'm pretty good with computers (hell, I get calls from friends all the time), but when it comes to hardware issues...forget it.

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 10:11 PM

Yeah, they probably still would want to charge you. D= But hey, at least your company is buying you a new one. O=

I can fix most issues myself as well...but when it comes down to figureing out what's wrong with it, or hardware sort of issues...I'm not so advanced in that area. Though I do intend to get there.

You will...I'm just one of those lifeless dorks who spends the majority of her day fricking around with computers...I've been doing it for years. But it'll just start coming to you eventually; you'd be surprised at how much you probably already know.

goldfish67 10-19-2007 10:13 PM

yeah that is annoying..especially when you call many times and people keep telling you to do the same things..which dont work otherwise you wouldnt keep calling  but they shouldnt charge you for getting sent messenges..only if you text yourself

Yeah, no one calls support lines for fun. XD

I do get charged for incoming messages...which is fine if they're coming from friends or co-workers...but I never signed up for anything, never gave out my number to any sites (hell, I hardly give it to the people I know)...and I know there are all these wonderful random generation systems out there, but I'm just miffed about getting charged for something I never asked for in the first place. That would be like me sending junk mail to someone else and asking them to pay the postage.

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 10:17 PM

@Brain-Damnage: O= I totally just noticed that your name says Damnage, not Damage. xD I like that. xD

Anyway. I spend a lot of time fooling around with the computer myself...mostly cause my school is online, so that's just what I do. xD

@goldfish: Well wouldn't that be nice? O= Unfortunately, they wouldn't make nearly as much money that way. And they've never been concerned with how the customers feel. They just want their money. D<

XD You know, you're the first one to notice. :D Or at least to notice and say something about it. ^^

Oh, one of those cyber schools?

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 10:21 PM

@Damnage: O_o I wonder why no one's thought about charging recipients for their junk mail. We'd better keep on the hush about that, or they might do it. ;3;

Yup, it's a nifty school that's only a year old. I'm pretty much in love with it.

XD That'd be like telemarketers calling collect.

I was homeschooled for three years; always wanted to try the cyber schooling...although my desire to go high school (I didn't really know anyone and wasn't digging the whole hermit setup) outweighed it. I think it's a cool concept though.

I won't even get started about AT&T they are so horrible with their customer support. So is Bank of America.

But I had to call my other bank USAA and they solved my issue instantly and even had a solution to my issue with Bank of America so I can finally be done with that bank.

Aidan Montague 10-19-2007 10:27 PM

I hate telemarketers too. D<

What I really like about cyber school is that I don't have to see any of them face to face if I don't want to. It's all over the internet. So it's pretty awesome.

I've never had any issues with my bank...although my banker and I attend weekly business networking meetings in the same local chapter, so he feels pretty inclined to take care of my problems. ^^ I just had to call him today; he waived an overdraft fee for me...

I've never been a fan of big banks like Bank of America though; I prefer the smaller ones like this guy is at.

Telemarketers slay me...I know it's their job...but I can't fathom doing that all day.

Yes, not seeing people face to face is always a good thing...that's why I'm non sites like these. XD It's just...easier.
