How ill/sick do you need to be before you skip school/work?

How ill/sick do you need to be in order to skip school or work? Just a little queasy? Or do you almost fall over and still insist on going?

As for me, I try to go when I can, but when I feel I wouldn't be able to concentrate at all I see no point in going. I rather spend the day home to get well the next day.

i hate high school.
it's boring and the people are immature.
and lucky for me,
i don't even need a fever to be allowed to stay home.

BlaqPhoenix 10-22-2007 07:29 AM

Depends on what is going on in class and/or work before I decide to skip. School I'm more likely to skip than work. And skipping school is probably why I did really bad last term at college. I was like.. "Wow, I am sleepy. I think I'll sleep just 5 minutes more" Then the 5 minutes turned into an hour and it's like "Meh.. Too late to make class now, I won't even bother." and yea.. that happened WAY too many times..

Work I'd rarely skip. I may have once, but that's about it.

In 5th grade I went to class knowing I had a high fever...

Blyr 10-22-2007 07:38 AM

I absolutely HATE to miss class, since I'm in college, and I pay for these classes >__<;;

If I have a cold, and I can tough it out, I usually just suck on a cough drop, and go to class. If I'm coughing, vomiting, and miserable, i'll stay home. x__x;;

Oh, and If I get a headache, or migraine, I won't bother going to class at all. I'll go straight home. Migraines are hereditary, and I'm almost at the point where I need a prescription migraine medicine, so I don't take any chances x__X;

The Wandering Poet 10-22-2007 07:50 AM

Hereditary headaches? Fun...

For me my headaches are constant... I can... well... hear stuff I shouldn;t be capable of hearing... so I can barely even watch tv now
(The tv's sounds inside gave me migranes)

Frog 10-22-2007 07:54 AM

I have to be on the verge of death, continually throwing up, or going to the hospital to be able to skip school. Actually, it happens more often then you'd think -- and that's sticking with the above rules.

I don't even have to be feeling ill to WANT to skip school, though. :P

Captain Aamelia 10-22-2007 07:55 AM

I still live with my parents so I have to be half dead, or very close, before my mom lets me stay at home.. :roll:

But that's just because she knows I am very good at faking illness 8) I used to do that alot in my old school, I didn't like it there at all!

>__<;; Oh god, I wouldn't be able to stand that. >.<;

I'd rather have someone sit there and pound on me with a hammer, than have a headache. x__x;; I actually quit drinking, for fear of waking up hungover. Vomiting I can handle, migraines I can't. x___x;;

Well I do too, but to avoid them I have to be in a nearly silent room with quiet music... else I have a headahce. Migranes are usually from cars, TV, and little kids D:

Usually if I have just a cold, or light flu, I would still go to school. Anything worse than that and i would stay home. Now I'm at college doing my aviation course I try never to skip it. I even went when I had laryngitis!

Emrysa 10-22-2007 08:19 AM

I hate missing classes.
My rule of thumb is one sick day per class per term and try not to use it unless something comes up.
Honestly most of my missed days are because my mom has Dr.'s appointments or meetings with her medi lawyer for my grandparents and wants me to go along to help her.
But I too am in college and I've got to agree with the person who said it's different when you're paying for it. I've gone into class with the flu before. Yeah, probably not fair to other students but I'm not going to fail because I missed a pop-quiz or something.

Proverbial Puppet 10-22-2007 08:21 AM

I really dislike missing class or work. So I try to go even if I'm falling over half dead or running to the bathroom to throw up every five seconds.

sessigirl 10-22-2007 08:32 AM

I try to miss class as often as I can...>_< so I try to let my parents let me stay home...It dosent always work though. D=

Taviren 10-22-2007 08:35 AM

Freshman year of college, I got the flu pretty bad. For two days, I skipped all of my classes. Except my Japanese classes. I still went to those even though, one of the days, I threw up on the way there. So it depends on how important what I'm going to be missing is. My Japanese classes would be tough to play catch-up with. But my other classes I felt fine with missing. I e-mailed my professors ahead of time to let them know I wouldn't be there and why. None of them replied that they wanted me to come to class anyway.

Ebil 10-22-2007 08:55 AM

When I was at school I'd not get away with faking being sick as my Mum was a nurse. No getting away with faking being ill around her.
So if I really didn't want to be at school, I'd have to go in and just fake being sick to the school nurse and she'd send me home instead xD

I can't really miss work at all as it's a family business and if I don't do my share, we'll not be able to get by, so unless I was incapable of moving, I just get on with it usually.

Aeisha 10-22-2007 09:11 AM

I generally stay at home if I have a high fever, if I am vomiting, have an injury that prevents me from working or if I have a really bad cold (really runny nose, sneezing and coughing continuously).
The reason I stay home with a fever is because I often have a problem with fainting and if that happens I can't stay awake at all.

gamefreak1993 10-22-2007 10:41 AM

for me to stay outta school? i just hafta hav a bad tummy ache :] last time my mom didnt listen to me i ended up fainting in the girls bathroom and yakking in the hallway later that day. then she found me at the hospital being stuck with seringes *shivers* horrible flu

Wynna 10-22-2007 10:55 AM

The first time I called into work sick was about a month ago, I stepped on a rusty nail, and I didn't get it checked out, and it got all infected and bruised, so when I got up that morning (It was a Saturday I think), I couldn't walk. It hurt so much, but that was the only time I called in sick.

Cherish 10-22-2007 10:58 AM

I do one little sneeze, and it's like "I'm ill! No work for me today! Let's go to the park, out for coffee, then on to the pub instead!"

Life is good. 8)

Nissa 10-22-2007 11:10 AM

Stay at home mom here, no sick days for me. When I did work out of the home it didn't take much. I'm a big baby and would pretty much hide under the covers eating soup until I felt better.

siaasgn 10-22-2007 01:12 PM

It really depends on what kind of sick I am feeling and what I have going on that day.

If I am having sinus issues I'll go into work and just suffer through them. If I am having tummy issues I'll generally stay home.

One time I did go to work while I was throwing up - it was a Friday and I had 2 student who were supposed to come in for an exam - I had the exams locked in my cabinet and no one else had the key so I went into work and ran to the bathroom every 20 minutes to get sick until both of the damn students canceled on me - then I had my boyfriend take me home so I could pass out on the bathroom floor for the rest of the day. Man . .that was a terrible day.

Arius Death 10-22-2007 01:13 PM

I had better be puking up my guts if I miss work. My job is important and I work 60 hours a week.

trekkie 10-22-2007 01:23 PM

I would have to be lying on the ground dead before I skip school due to illness...I don't even remember the last time I didn't go to school because I was sick. I usually go to school when I have a headache or a sore throat since they don't hinder me much at all.
Also, whenever I get really, really sick it is during an extended break from school like spring break or christmas break. :3

ljosberinn 10-22-2007 02:14 PM

  • Depends on the class a lot. If it's a class like literature where the slides the teacher posts on the net really are enough, I might skip it. But if it's like history, where there are no slides and I really have to note stuff down, I will try my best to go. Even though I won't be able to note stuff down, I'll at least sit through it and hope for it to get into my head somehow. xP
    In high school I'd skip classes all the time though, sick or no.
