Pocket money
DO your parents give you or have given you pocket money in the past?
I remember my mom giving me like 30/5' a month being a girl, though it varied depending on her own money. She thought it was a good idea for me to learn the value of money, to manage it and decide if I wanted to save it for something bigger or spend it in small things, she used to be my bank too. I was very thankful for this money since it was the only money I received in the month for my things except for school money and traveling money. She never messed into the way I administrated this money, never told me ok but I will decide what you but with it, sometimes she gave me some advice but as we are very different she never really expected me to follow it, because that was MY money and I was free to do whatever i like with it, though it wasnt really much. Discuss: Do your parents give/used to give you pocket money ? How frequently? once a month? when they saw you were having good grades or doing something good? Did they ever "exchanged" that money for housework or doing the shopping, babysitting syblings? How much was it? What did you spend it on? Do you think this is a good way to be aware on how money works and how much effort it costs to have it? |
my mom used to give me money whenever I needed it.
Then i got a job and now I give her money when she needs it :\ |
man o.o i wish i got pocket money xP
my parents don't give me pocket money at all x___x i get an allowance of $2.50 a week but i have to do chores to earn it the chores aren't hard but still |
I get 10 bucks a week from my parents. I have to take out the recycling, load and unload the dishwasher, clean anything that can't go in the dishwasher, keep my grades up, clean my room, and clean up any messes I make around the house. Other than that, I don't have a job, but I might start babysitting.

my mum gave me pocket money on and off, then she gave us pocket money and clothing allowance, then she stopped. Then I got a paper round and no longer needed her eclectic bouts of pocket money.
|
My parents never gave me cash...
|
sigh...

The only time I got pocket money was from when I was 14 - 16 years old and I was living with different families. My parents would give me an allowance, so I could buy lunch at school (I got breakfast and dinner with the family I was staying with), clothing, and any other expenses I had.
I did get a ridiculous amount though. £75 a week, which was way more than I needed. Before and after that, when I was living with my parents, I never got an allowance, as they'd buy me anything I needed, and if it was something I wanted that wasn't essential, I just worked and saved up for it myself. |
It would depend on the week and if they actually had any money to give me. When I was younger, they wouldn't give me money but would sometimes tell me, 'I've got *insert amount here* for you, so what do you want?' And then we'd go to the store and I'd pick something out. That didn't happen often though. And in the passed few years, I get money on and off for doing chores. I have to do the chores all the time, it just depends on whether or not my mom actually has the extra money to give me. There's not a set amount or time I'll get it.
I think it's a good idea to make kids do chores for their money. Show them they've got to work for it. |
In chinese culture, I always get to get Lucky Envelopes, which contains money, throughout Chinese New Year week and on my birthday. I never used that money except to buy cute stationary at school and gifts for my little sister and use my quarters on game machines.
That is, until my parents began managing a restaurant at the mall. At first, my dad gave my little sis and I ten bucks to spend the whole day. Since I never shopped before, we ended up using up the money pretty quickly. We then learned the next week to use it for a toy to amuse ourselves while our parents work. Later, I began to help out at the mall and my dad paid me (though I was forced to help out). My mom disapproved of the books and toys I bought - but it was my hard earned money and they didn't 'forbid' me to buy it - though I learned to buy it more secretly. Now, I have quite a stash of money but I rarely use it except when I need to buy the next series in a book or necessary clothing. Mostly, I buy food. I don't see how important my money is anymore because I have to work so hard for it and that is what I see is more valuable. So, I like using the money I get during birthdays and Chinese New Year than my hard earned money. I hope to save enough for me to not rely on my parents too much when they stop working at the restaurant and we might face money troubles later this year. >.< |
I rarely get plaid anymore. >< I am still to young to get a job, so when I need money I just ask my mom. Most of the time I can get as much as I need. but then sometimes I have to pay her back. XP

My mom paid me when I did chores. She also gives me $100 every couple of weeks, which is nice. My grandfather used to give me $100 every month, too. [:
I really need to get a job .. |
Do your parents give/used to give you pocket money ?
No. But my cousins get pocket money. How frequently? once a month? when they saw you were having good grades or doing something good? They get it every week. Like an allowance. Also they get an item they want for every quarter of having good grades. Did they ever "exchanged" that money for housework or doing the shopping, babysitting syblings? Do you mean like an allowance? Like do chores, get paid? I do chores, but don't get paid while my cousins and friends do though. How much was it? $1 - 5 dollars. Sometimes $10/ My friend gets $30 - $60 a month. What did you spend it on? My cousin spends it on clothes and video games, while my friend buys tons of books. This is where I come in. I don't ask for much, just some books and new clothes every once in a while. Like at the begging and end of the year. [ Holidays don't count. ] And then my mom goes with my shopping, or stocking as we call it, for the upcoming year. Yepyep. :] This is pretty cool because it replaces my allowance and I don't have to worry about impulsive spending or saving for a long time. Just buy a couple things a couple times a year. Do you think this is a good way to be aware on how money works and how much effort it costs to have it? Definitely. It shows responsibility at a young age. It shows how you have to work for what you want and you can't get everything you want. Also how to save and manage it so you don't go broke. |
My parents, namely my dad, would give me a little money on payday. Usually it was $10 or so, but a few times he'd given me $20. I usually saved up and I'd spend it at the Disney Store whenever we went there... the only one was at a mall that was a good distance away. So we didn't go there much. I would also spend some of it in toy stores and things like that until I was a teenager. Then I'd just save it for skating or going to the mall with friends. XD
For awhile when I was between jobs and going out looking for new ones and things like that (the economy in my state and county is horrible, and it's difficult to find a job that isn't fast food). My dad would give me a little here and there, especially if my parents had won anything at Bingo on Tuesday. XD And... I spent it on groceries for myself, gas money, or art supplies. But now that I'm working, and I have my financial aid stuff coming in, I don't really need money right now. I buy my supplies with financial aid refunds and then spend my work money on clothes (I'm so lacking in decent clothes from that time I was unemployed. XD) I'm also struggling to save up for a newer car and my own apartment. :O |
Depending on my dad's mood, he'll give me money, randomly. >__>;; It's usually something like, $5-$10, but I just stick it in my wallet and forget about it.
Kinda funny, too, when I go to put money in the bank, sometimes I'll end up with $100-$200 more than I thought, because I always forget about money I find/people give me.. >.>; |
Do your parents give/used to give you pocket money? Yes at least they use to.
How frequently? once a month? when they saw you were having good grades or doing something good? Everyday Did they ever "exchanged" that money for housework or doing the shopping, babysitting syblings? Yes all the time... How much was it? Usually anywhere from one to three bucks What did you spend it on? Junk food... Sometimes I would save it though... Do you think this is a good way to be aware on how money works and how much effort it costs to have it? Yes but I never thought of it that way. |
I've never received pocket money for no apparent reason.
I'll get bribes occasionally, but never any rewards. |
Well, currently I'm still a minor and still a student, Everyday I receive 100 pesos (2-2.5 dollars per day >.>; )
I'm thankful since I don't need to work off my butt til' dusk x.x; |
Do your parents give/used to give you pocket money ? Well, yes, they did.
How frequently? once a month? when they saw you were having good grades or doing something good?In general, once a month. Though they gave my almost everytime I asked them/ or needed some. They usually didn't look at my grades. I studies quite well. Did they ever "exchanged" that money for housework or doing the shopping, babysitting syblings? Hm... don't remember. It was usually so, that when I went shopping, I could keep the exchange in the end. How much was it? Uhm... about 15$ What did you spend it on? Some junk, clothes, snacks or books. Do you think this is a good way to be aware on how money works and how much effort it costs to have it? Never thought about it. Maybe. |
I get maybe ... 15 dollars if I'm going shopping with a friend or something..

I was an odd teenager, I did not like to ask my mom for money at all. Anything frivolous was purchased using my own money. I worked at the school and received free lunch for my troubles, and also some cash and was paid twice a year. My only hobby was football games and a free pass was a perk of the school job. So I was pretty self sufficient. An additional benefit, since I hardly ever asked for anything, I was pretty much guaranteed to get something if I asked for it. It was nice knowing that I could count on mom if I did need something and couldn't get it myself. And I'm sure it was nice for her to see that I could manage so well without a lot of cash.
