Paying (literally) for that 'A'

>.<
Today's the last day of this nine weeks grading period at school.
My teacher for Newspaper class was absent.
So I forgot to give her the money I was going to pay for the advertisements grade.
It's going to drop me by a letter grade if I don't turn it in!
Oh no T_T

I already paid for the first issue. The second issue gets printed in two weeks but I think she already calculated the grade as this nine weeks!

T_T I don't want to get a C for this class... if she doesn't count it as this nine week's I'll have a borderline A - and that means straight A's! I haven't had straight A's since eighth grade. And I'm in my junior year in high school, taking 4 AP classes too!

My friends and I were discussing how we literally had to pay money to get an A in this class. Before Thanksgiving, we have to sell 5 tickets of $15 each for our bowling fundraiser, or buy the tickets ourselves... that's $75! The cheapest advertisement we offer is the business card size - $25. We're supposed to go out and look for advertisers or pitch in the money ourselves...

I understand that if she doesn't do this, our newspaper wouldn't ever be able to get enough students to bring in money. We even decided to splurge a little more on color ink this year, the first time, - which has brought us more advertisers.

In art class, I'm the only one of three students in my Drawing and Painting class to bring in donation money... and we haven't used anything more than charcoal pencils and tempura paint. And everyone gets to do it, though she promised again and again that donators will get to do something special.

*o*
Discussion (do not copy and paste like a survey >n< ):
-Do you think it's fair to lose a letter grade because you didn't bring in money for the class?
-Do you have any club/class that requires paying a fee?
-Do your teachers usually say the money is 'voluntary' because the law says they can't actually ask the students for money so it hurts their grades? Or does your teacher count it as a grade? Extra credit?
-How can I send my teacher 25 dollars over the weekend?
-How close or how often do you get straight A's?
-Anybody else in Newspaper? Are you guys a class or an afterschool club?

I think that it's fair to charge an extra fee for certain classes as long as you were aware of it when you signed up for the class. I even think it's fair to penalize peoples grades who don't bring in the required fee. However, it would be really smart of your school to make people pay those fees at the beginning of the year during registration.

I know it's a little different, but in college all of the classes are paid for seperately and if there is a class that requires additional materials, the student will be charged more. Plus, I got charged for field trips often in elementary school. It's kind of similar...

Did the teacher put an email address or telephone number on the syllabus? I don't blame you for not wanting to lose your A, I wouldn't either. I'd try looking her up in the phone book, on the school website, etc. Heck, even finding her home address and going there would be better than nothing. Sure, it would be a little weird, but not as bad as loosing a great grade.

We don't make them because we don't have to pay the fee. We can go out and find advertisers, especially sponsors, but I haven't found one, as is the same for many kids.

Well, you have to pay college tuition to attend college in the first place.

Elementary school field trips weren't required... it was just for fun.

>.< I emailed her asking whether the grade was for first nine weeks... But I'm working for my parents all weekend. I wonder if I can go on Teacher Work Day Monday and drop off the money? It's sure to PO my parents though who keeps on telling me to drop the class... they want me take less electives, especially a pricey one like this.

My Humanties (Lang. Arts and History) Ask for a $5 donation? Fee? whatever at the beginning of the year, turn in to History. I forgot, I haven't done so yet O_o.

But I wouldn't stay in a class that charged me $75 for a grade. . .

Best luck with that though. and all your other classes. . .

life in red and black 10-27-2007 12:03 AM

@zipperglow - O.o I've never been asked for donation in history or english classes. Well, English classes ask you to buy your own books. I'm guessing the five dollars go to that? Why history though? O.o

Well, we're supposed to sell the tickets... though almost everyone has been having really bad luck selling them... T_T

Paying for a grade?
That's not right.
So the poor kids fail?
Niiiice.
I mean, sure, they want their money, but getting graded for turning it in?
That's not right.
:/

life in red and black 10-27-2007 12:24 AM

@phrank - Exactly. But, if, unlike me, they turned in their weekly assignments (BS stuff like current events that our teacher says we have to do to keep it a class instead of just a club) on time, they could drop to a B instead of a C. Or maybe a really high B? >.< lol. I agree... it's not right. T-T

phrank 10-27-2007 12:26 AM

Wow.
That's not right.
At all.
I can't imagine that.
It would be terrible.
Since if I get anything lower than a B, I get yelled at.
Prank is supposed to be some genius kid.
D<

My friend's father disowned her because she didn't get all A's.
He wrote her a note.
It said 'Until your grades are up I'm not considering you my daughter.'
Which is really sad.

life in red and black 10-27-2007 12:35 AM

@phrank - same here. I'm not supposed to get C's. >.<

I think my dad would be more lenient on me if I got a C in one of my AP classes... but this is an elective!
Your poor friend! She wouldn't happen to be asian like I am?

phrank 10-27-2007 12:44 AM

She's actually French.
Her father expects her to be super-duper-awesome.
But she's very forgetful.

life in red and black 10-27-2007 12:50 AM

We're still on the same boat. My parents are very disappointed in me because of my forgetfulness. I forget my homework often, and studying for tests. I also forget to call them right when I get home, and that causes them a lot of anxiety. I've lost really important things multiple times, etc. My parents don't trust me to remember anything >.<
Here's an example: I forgot to pay the Ad money for Newspaper class.

That's horrible. ;__;
If I lost a letter grade because of something like that,
I'd totally be telling someone of importance. >:I
