What's your major?

Does anyone have a major, or know what career they want to major in when they're in college?

I'm a sophomore in college, and I'm majoring in Photography.
I'm one hundred percent sure that's what I want to do, but I'm not sure if I want to be a still photographer for the movies, or a crime scene photographer.

What about you? ^^

Facade 11-04-2007 02:41 PM

Ohhh, crime scene photgraphy sounds extremely interesting! I'd probably spew if I had to do that though. >_>; Go you!

I'm a sophomore in highschool myself. D:
I'm thinking of majoring in either screenwriting, psychology, theater, dance, or anything else that'll spark my interests by the time I'm ready to decide. xD

I'm mainly focusing on screenwriting, theater, and psychology in my mind. Dance was just something that occured to me in my mind the other day, "Ohhh... I've always wanted to learn to dance, maybe I should start, and if it takes off I'll major in that in college..."
Ah, the pointlessness of tons of dreams... xD

I'd also probably see myself in minoring in French and Creative Writing.

At my high school you can have a general major and take classes pertaining to it. Its a magnet high school. n 0n

My major is engineering.
In college, I'm going to major in Material Science/Engineering and Nanotechnology, with a minor in Mechanical engineering. n_n

Major = Degree, am i right?

Well, i'm still in my first of two or three years of college, studying biology, psychology and environmental science. At the moment, i want to go on to study zoology at university.

Ebil 11-04-2007 02:46 PM

I majored in "International Tourism" bit of a pointless subject really, but it got me to Australia (on an exchange program) for 6 months with 2 days of classes and 5 day weekends, so it worked for me.
I wanted to do Psychology more than anything or Journalism...or both. But when I graduated school I was thinking I couldn't afford further education, so I got a full time job and didn't apply to any Universities. My circumstances changed just before University classes were due to start and I found I could afford to go. However by that time all the good classes were full. I called so many different universities looking for Psych. Journalism and even English vacancies, but none had any. After a week of calling around and getting nowhere and it getting to 3 days before classes started everywhere, I called one place they said "Sorry our psychology classes are full, but try the tourism department" o_o Which seemed kind of weird, but I was that fed up with calling around, I did what they said and found myself doing Tourism o_0
I would have liked to be a Marriage Guidance Counselor or a Travel Writer, but instead I'm co-managing my parents holiday complex o_o It's weird how life works out. But I'm happy with what I'm doing at the moment, so I guess it all works out for the best ^.^

Clair Voyant 11-04-2007 02:47 PM

I'm not yet in college but I'll either have a History degree or a get a lisence in Funeral Home Derector

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 02:48 PM

Honestly, I think I would too! *cringe*
So, right now, I'm leaning towards Still Photography for the movies. ^^;;

Screenwriting? What's that again? Drew a blank. ^^;;
That's something to do with the movies, yeah?

I definitely want to take up Italian, and learn it fluently, since I am Italian. Well, seventy-five percent Italian, twenty-five percent Assyrian. And proud of it! *big grin* haha
But yeah, I took two years in high school, so I want to more classes in college.

(Grr, my dog is on my bed! D:
xD hahaha)

Majinkoz 11-04-2007 02:50 PM

I'm only a sophomore in college...so my major is considered pre-business or undecided business.

But I think I'm probably going to go into Finance....So I'll be business Finance, and then after I get my Bachelor's in that I'm going to get my Master's in Library Sciences. ^^ yay for librarians.

Sadistix_Love 11-04-2007 02:56 PM

Right now I'm still in high school. I have two more years before I get the hell outta here. I have no idea what I want to major in at all. I keep changing my mind what I want to be. T_T One day I'll hopefully figure it out... Hopefully. Dx

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 02:57 PM

@neur0mancer - Ooh, sounds like something way beyond my comprehension! xD haha
Good luck with that! ^^

@Sun - Yeah, major is the same thing as degree. ^^ At least I'm pretty sure it is! xD haha
Zoology? Sounds interesting! ^^ What career in zoology do you want to pursue?

@Ebil - Hey, whatever happens, happens for a reason, yeah?
As long as your happy doing what you do, then that's all that matters. ^^

@Clair Voyant - Why does your name seem familiar to me? *puzzled*
What exactly does the latter option entail?

@Majinkoz - I love reading so freaking much! >< hahaha
So what is Library Sciences, exactly?

EDIT: @Sadistix_Love - Hey, being undecided is normal. My best friend was undecided, but now she knows what she wants to do. Everyone figures it out at their own pace, yeah? ^^

Sun 11-04-2007 03:00 PM

I'm looking into Anthrozoology, which is studying animal/human relations and behavior. I'm not 100% sure which branch yet though.

Ise 11-04-2007 03:01 PM

Major... I'm an Illustration major in my senior year of college. I'm about to be spit into the real world, hoshit xD; I have no idea where I'm going to go with the style of work I do, however. A little on the frightening side, really.

It's true. ^^ My cousin didn't know what she wanted to be till she entered college. (Denturist now)

But I want to do something I enjoy but that doesn't disappoint my parents as well. :X Which is quite hard unless all the sudden I become to sort of celebrity. =w=; Though I suck at dramam. xD

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 03:06 PM

@Sun - Oh, that sounds very interesting. Awesome, good for you! *grin*

@Ise - Illustration, nice!
Do you have to draw nude models? Because that's what my friends have to do at AIB (The Art Institute of Boston) when they take drawing classes.
Photography majors (thank God!) don't have to take drawing classes. But that was back in Boston.
Now I'm at WestConn, and I [i]do[i] have to take drawing classes, but I asked my advisor, and she found an alternative drawing class where I don't have to draw nude models. *relief*
Wow, senior, eh? I can't imagine how scary it is, but I bet that when I get there, realization will dawn on me, and I'll be as scared as heck! xD

EDIT: @Sadistix_Love - Denturist? What is that?
I've known that I wanted to do Photography since I was a sophomore in High School! xD
I know that whatever I wanted to do, my parents would be proud. ^^
Why would that be hard?

Sadistix_Love 11-04-2007 03:18 PM

@dark: A denturist is a person who makes dentures. :3 You know, when old people loose all of their teeth they would need fake ones? Aka dentures. :3

Lol, my parents are a bit traditional and since they lived through war and poverty, they want me to do something along the lines of doctor or lawyer. Somethine like computer games, they would kill me unless it's for some big company like Walt Disney or something. DDx

Lol, of course =3 Even if you were a photography major at Pratt, you'd have to do that. It starts out Freshman year as a foundation year where everyone takes the same classes - life drawing, sculpture, LCD and liberal arts etc. The second year you decide if you're going into art education, COM-D (communications design, photography's in here) or fine arts and you go through the basic foundation of that area to decide where to specialize. Photography was one of the classes, along with Illustration etc. After that the final two years are specializing in your given major.

I love model drawing, but then again I love drawing people. Nude models haven't fazed me past the first half hour of that first class freshman year. It gets to be very objective, you're just trying to get it right and learn the proportions, anatomy, mark making etc.

Aie, yeah. I'm stressing rather badly things to my senior project classes and the fact that I don't know where I'm going to go. The prospect of living here in New York City is very daunting and not to mention exceedingly expensive. So I'm not sure.

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 03:30 PM

@Sadistix_Love - Oh, I see. ^^
I kinda know what that's like.
My best friend, her parents are kinda like that. They're from India, and they want her to do something with medicine, or be a doctor, or whatever, you know? Well, my best friend wants to do something with medicine anyways, so... yeah. xD
But it must be tough. I couldn't imagine doing something I don't like for the rest of my life just to please my parents. ):
I hope it all works out for you. ^^

@Clair Voyant - What do I mean about what?
Your name sounding familar, or when I asked what the latter option entailed?

@Ise - o: Oh, wow. haha xD At AIB, I went right into my major, but it was an art school, and the academics were tough.
I didn't get in because of my academics, but because of my portfolio, so I transfered to WestConn after finishing my year at AIB.
I had no choice anyways, because I wasn't able to go back, but it all worked out, and I like WestConn better than AIB.
The teachers are great, and the classes are easier. ^^; I do miss the city though. It was my first time in a city, and I fell in love with it! <3 haha
Wow, New York, eh? Sounds expensive. Are you dorming, or do you have an apartment?

Admonish Misconstruction 11-04-2007 03:32 PM

Aerospace engineer. Thats really about it.

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 03:32 PM

Cool. ^^
What do you do for that career?

Sadistix_Love 11-04-2007 03:35 PM

Lol, almost all Indian girls I know want to do something medicine, like my friends. :3 But their grades are pretty good so they'll likely achieve their goal.

Yea, I need a job that pays well and my parents will accept. @[email protected]

Thank you.

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 03:37 PM

Yeah, my best friend is so smart! <3 haha

What is something you want to do that would make your parents proud?
What were you thinking of doing that your parents wouldn't approve of?

No prob! ^^

Pratt is an art school xD One of the top 10 in the states if I remember right, if not just plain one of the oldest or something. But we're required to take liberal arts as well as our major classes to be well rounded. They also expect we have a similarly well rounded base to decide from. ^^;

I like the the classes are hard. It makes me work for it and I learn more. The professors, well those in my major classes anyway, are great. I could care less about my liberal arts stuff generally.

I'm dorming. It's massively expensive here regardless. A friend lives with five roommates and STILL pays over $500 a month for his apartment. >_>; Sucks.

darkvineyard 11-04-2007 03:44 PM

Oh, I know that Pratt is an art school. ^^
My brother was going to apply there, but he ended up going to Lyndon State University. ^^

I know what you mean about being well-rounded. My parents tell me that, and I agree. WestConn requires you to take liberal courses too, and I wouldn't have it any other way. *grin*

Wow, that's a lot of money to pay for an apartment. o:
