Soul?
I was reading an 10 year old magazine about sience (I have no life ;__;) and I came over a small footnote about the soul, a subject I have never really thought about. The small note was about this man who had made a couple of experiments with weighing "known to be dying" people, measuring whe weighloss at the moment of death. The result showed that the body came to loose 21 grams at the time of death. The men doing these experiments wanted to show that the soul could be meassuerd in weight and is out of a solid material... My Opinion: I do not believe the soul can be feelt, touched, smellt or measured in any kind of way. I dont really know If I believe in souls, I think the soul is a thing humans have come up with. I´m not saying that souls dont exist, cause I cant possibly know that. Nobody can really know that... anyway, I think the weighloss caused by "loosing the soul" really has something to do with the loss of fluids in the body. That is what I think. The soul has a sifferent meaning in different religions. If you believe in souls, what do you think they are? Discuss: Do you believe that souls exist? Why do you think the loss of 21 grams occured on the time of death? What do you think happens after one has passed away? What do you think ghost are?(if you believes in them) Have you ever seen a ghost? Have you ever had a close to death experiece? |
I'm not so sure I believe in soul, the idea just seems so difficult for me to comprehend. I think we would like to think we just don't die and decompose, but live on, in some metaphysical, other worldly sense.
I think that the body weighed 21 grams less for a number of reasons, bodily fluids, excrement, air even...but that's a lot of air. I don't think that 21 grams of nothing, constitutes as a soul. I think that after when one passes away, we simply rot. Morbid as it is, it's the truth, in a scientific way. I have yet to explore my religious beliefs...but as of now, that's my theory. (And it's proven too hehehe.) Ghosts...oh man that's a whole other can of worms. |

A person's soul, is what make them themself.
How I am me, and you are you. And like anything in this world they can go through change. You have your likes, your dislikes, hobbies, habits, and your personality. A soul is one of those things that you just have to belief is there, because you are concious. Ever heard the saying 'I think therefore I am'? It had to do with true life when an organism has the ability to think about tiself, and why it's here on this earth. I think that's part of having a soul, finding out who you are. A soul, is something too deep to be defined so quickly. So yes, I do belive in the existance of a soul. |
Of course you have a soul. It's your mind, emotion and will. You think and feel because of your soul. It's not a physical thing, but it's there. I mean, how else would you be 'brain-dead'? Your body is still there, but your soul and spirit isn't.
For that matter, I think soul and spirit are different things, as well. |

I believe we have souls because without we're nothing, dead. Without a soul you have no identity.

I think the soul is the essence of the human being. I believe it is the energy, the spark, the will that keeps them living. I also believe its a connection of the heart and mind.

I believe in a soul, I feel that we wouldn't be whole if we didn't have one. I don't believe in god though or most religions. I do believe in being honest and nice and kind to people and animals. I feel as long as you lead a clean life than thats all that you really need. The soul is an energy that makes us more than just physical creatures. We need to have spirituality and the soul helps us believe that there is more out there than just us.

I don't know. Maybe the experiment was like that because when the patients were alive they put pressure on the scale. When they die, they don't really add much more weight or pressure to gravity, because they don't need to stand up or anything. I do believe people have souls, but I agree with you. I don't think it can be measured.

I know that when a person dies, their organs/muscles loosen, meaning that if anything in your bladder is released so that could be some of the 21 grams.
I don't think the soul can really be measured. I do believe that a soul exists but I don't really know how it could be measured or seen or experienced in any scientific method. |
Hmm...that's quite interesting. However, I don't believe it was actually a human soul, because...well, there isn't exactly any evidence outside that to say that a soul has any mass. If anything, they should be looking at energy, I think. Electromagnetic fields around the body, that kind of stuff. The 21 grams of lost weight, as nike13 said, could easily be something that was released from the body when the organs losened.
I do believe a soul exists. In fact, I WOULD have a nice strong piece of evidence...but sadly, it relies on assuming all that it may prove, so it doesn't quite work. XD I'd...rather not elaborate on it, though. I do believe in ghosts; I have seen some nice physical evidence of them, and have even had four separate encounters at my job within the past year, two of which were witnessed by others around. Like most people, I do believe they are, in most cases, the disembodied souls of those who have passed on, with the exception being poltergeists. It is unlikely you've ever taken a digital thermometer or an EMF meter into an area that is presumed to be haunted (with the stories coming from a RELIABLE source), but if you have...did you notice it behaving oddly? Spikes in electromagnetic activity where there is supposedly nothing to cause it, or sudden changes in temperature? I've seen and felt it...it is awesome. :mrgreen: So, I do believe there is a soul, and I do believe that MAYBE it is measurable, though it may not be. Can't really tell for sure yet. However, I DON'T think it has any weight. I think whoever decided to try to measure it with a scale was going about the idea all wrong. Also, I've had a few near-death experiences, and some pretty interesting things happened in those moments...but if I started, I'd end up going on and on forever. XD Maybe I'll talk about it if someone wants me to. |
I do believe that souls exist, but that within the boundries of modern science, it cannot be measured in any which way. It's my own beliefe that the body we can see, is just a shell for the soul, and that our perception of 'us' or 'me' is infact our soul. We just look through the eyes of a body that we call ours, and reconisne that as 'us'. I've no idea as to the loss of weight at death. After somebody has passed away...I'm not really sure as to what happens. I think there is a heaven and hell, i just can't concieve how it all works. Although i've never seen a ghost...I don't think, i don't question their existance at all. I think they are our souls, but those of people who feel they, for some reason, can't move into the afterlife. Neardeath experience? I havne't had one. |

The soul is what keeps us alive, what makes us different from eachother.
Our body is just flesh and skin, nothing more, nothing less. And the body and skin are overrated, the soul is underated. Without this flesh and skin, there wouldnt be any fashion , nor people dieing of for example anorexic because of fashion. Soul excists -nods- |
hmmm i dunno in one of my lessons we are talking about the difference between the body and soul and this kind of subject in general i dont really know my opinions on thsi because its really confusing and we have no scientific evidence to prove it or disprove it so what can be said for the existence of the soul
oh well i dont know it would be nice to know we have a soul ...its kind of comforting actuallly and that story about losing weight when somebody dies automatically is kind of interesting whether its related to the soul nobody knows i guess i would love to know the truth behind it though :) |
