Rowf! Rooowf! Rowf!

This is ruddy adorable!

My cousin left a mirror with us. My mum's put it down in front of our dog's bed. He's sat there staring at it for ages, then started barking at it.

It's like what they've done with elephants and chimps - only, of course, he can't recognise himself/has no self-awareness.

He's still staring. xD

Soo... how do your pets react to this sort of thing? Do they have any other funny quirks? Things that make you laugh? Our puppy's stick-obsessed (the most impressive was sixteen foot!) Anything else?

Jenova 11-09-2007 06:15 PM

My dog ignores mirrors, but flashlights drive him crazy.

Sirec 11-09-2007 06:21 PM

My family's cat will chase anything that moves (even though he's fat) xD
I got a laser pointer for my birthday several months ago, and it's so much fun to have him running all over the house. He really needs the exercise, lol. But then my cousin's dog chewed up the laser pointer so it doesn't work ;_;
We still can reflect light off shiny stuff or drag strings around, though. And the funniest thing he does is randomly start chasing my sister's legs when she's walking; he just dives on her pant legs and digs in with his claws and gets dragged around. xD

Eddafred 11-09-2007 06:29 PM

My cat used to bat at his reflection, but he's too old and fat for that now xD

He used to do the same thing for laser pointers, chasing it around the room for up to a half hour at a time xD

All he really goes for now is string.
And even then, it takes quite a bit of coaxing on my behalf.
Being fat and all, he's pretty lazy/sleepy.

my dogs don't know the difference between a doggy door and a wall. but other than that their pretty normal. oh!! but my cousis dog is racist against mexicans and stuff. and i'm mexican and he was barking at me and once they let him look in a mirror. and well he's a black lab.. so he was barking at himself for hours.

neon666 11-09-2007 06:40 PM

well i have no cases like that but if i could think of anything my rabbit scares pretty much anything
my next door neighbors have a huge dog which is pretty much a huge wolf...
once i was down the garden cleaning out my rabbit and let it run around and the dog was scared to death by this tiny rabbit it was cute but weird

the_forgotten_apology 11-09-2007 06:44 PM

@neon
that's funny oh one time we were dog sitting a weiner dog and we tried to teach it the doggy door and it just walked right throught the screen door!! it was broken for almost a year!! it was really funny!! we wondered how the dog broke it at first but after we just lauhged at the dog.

Snarry 11-09-2007 06:45 PM

My dogs bark when they see themselves in the mirror...it's funny!

Oh Gawd, it's freaking hilarious when animals react to their mirror image!
XD

My kitten was running aroudn like a maniac and came across this mirror propped up against our wall.
He started walking up to it sideways hissing and spitting, his tail was HUGE
ROFLMAO

Even now, after he realized it was his reflection, he still gets caught off caurd by it.

Since the way it's propped it looks like a continuation if the carpet, so he ran straight into it once
I died laughing
XD

Komitadjie 11-09-2007 06:52 PM

My friend has one of those little terriers, I forget the exact kind, but it is quite small and rather stupid. The thing absolutely gos NUTS over lasers, it'll try to chase that spot anywhere.

I found out about this while my friend and I were having an airsoft battle, I have a Marui MP7 with a laser reflex sight on the side rail, and the little dog kept trying to climb my friend's chest to get to the spot. It was funnier than heck, and totally nerfed his aim. xD

When I moved with my cat, our closets had tall
mirrors on them. My cat was freaked out. o__o;
He'd stare into them all day, just waiting for
something to happen. And if I'd put a hand mirror
in front of him he'd always look behind it, thinking
there was something back there. :'D

So does my boyfriend's cat after he hasn't
seen me for awhile. He rubs up against my head
like crazy then starts eating my hair. xD

ToxicQuiddity 11-09-2007 07:06 PM

That's so crazy
XD

It gets stuck in their mouth and they practically choke on it, but yet they still go for it
>w<

Haha. xD I love little kitties. They're so silly.

Eileanora 11-09-2007 07:08 PM

nope, no cat in mirror incidents here xD
but let me tell you, two of my cats go NUTS,
for ants.

whenever we let them outside, they sniff around,
find an ant trail, then they collapse, and start
rubbing and rolling all over them xD
its pretty hysterical.

Yeah 11-09-2007 07:10 PM

If we put a mirror in front of my cat, he would keep looking around it trying to figure out where the other cat was.

8.bit.ouji 11-09-2007 08:40 PM

one of my horses HATES dogs... she'll chase any one that comes near out of the pastures.

other than that, most of the animals are pretty normal, though my cats definitely like to chase anything that moves/ catches their interest

Chaitealatte 11-09-2007 09:59 PM

@Ouji - My sister rides, and the horse she looks afer loves our puppy. He toddles up, leans back, and licks the horse's nose. xD

That's so adorable, but I'd feel guilty and that it was really mean and I'd take away the mirror.

I have two turtles... haven't seen them do much interesting things...

Dystopia 11-09-2007 10:50 PM

I had a dog in the past that did the same thing. There was a wall with a large mirror that went to the floor, and when she looked at herself in the mirror for the first time, she went crazy barking at herself. xD I found that hilarious.

Dan 11-09-2007 10:58 PM

I've done it with those betta fish before. It's absolutely hilarious. When you hold up the mirror to the fish, it's gills start flaring and looks kind of like a lion and it starts flailing around. ^^ I think it's maybe because they don't know it's a mirror and that's probably the first time they've ever seen what they look like. Imagine what the world would be like if there were no mirrors o_o

Dystopia 11-09-2007 10:59 PM

@ Dan - xD I want to try to do that to my beta fish now. Which reminds me that I'd better go clean out his bowl today.

Fullmetal Phantom 11-09-2007 11:35 PM

My dog never USED to do anything like that; she never did it when she was a puppy...but she does it now. XD She'll just stare at it, seeming to think something will happen...and she makes these really weird squeaking noises. It's hilarious.

She's half Tasmanian Devil, I swear she is. She spins around the room whenever someone comes in...and to be perfectly honest, it scares me sometimes. She is a BIG dog. I'm always afraid she's going to break something...or someone...

She had her weirdest quirk when she was a puppy, though. She REFUSED to walk on a leash. We had to CARRY her. If we would try to walk with her on a leash...she would sit down and refuse to get up. The harder you pulled, the more stubborn she got about it. If you pulled TOO hard, she would lay down and stay there. For quite some time, she had to be carried...EVERYWHERE. XD

And...one of my cats is a huge attention whore. You can't walk by her without her reaching out with claws that have never been trimmed in her 16 year life and grabbing you. Usually somewhere...inappropriate. XD
