People usually keep a spare house key in case they lock themselves out or lose it or something like that. Some common places are on the ledge over the door, or under the welcome mat, or under a large rock somewhere near the door. These are all pretty common places, which means thieves can easily find them. O.O Uh-oh, right?

Anyway, where do you keep your spare key?
Is it something obvious, or do you think it's in a good place?
Where do you think the best hiding place for a spare key would be?
Do you tell people (family members/friends/etc.) where your spare key is in case they need to get into your house in an emergency?

I know that we've got a little decorative frog that has a little opening on his belly that you can put a key into. I don't think we've ever actually put a key in him though. In fact, I don't think we even have a spare key. ._.; I know where my friend's spare key is though because I used to have to feed her dogs and cats while they were out of town. As for me, I'd probably bury a small box with the key in it underneath of a marker, such as a rock or ornamental garden piece. That way, it wouldn't be extremely obvious, but not incredibly hard to find either. I don't have enough creativity to think of an awesome hiding place. xD

It's been said that crook's know all the good spots for hiding spare keys.
So honestly I wouldn't place a spare key outside n3n.
Suggestions would be in the front yard so that your neighbors would be able to see someone unusual digging it up. [Tell a trusted neighbor where your key is]
So they can either call you or the police.
Under something not so obvious like a garden gnome or underneath a mat.
Plant Pots also not a good idea.
Or a hole in the bricks {again if your house is like mine x3}

Personally I'd hide one somewhere in my gated fenced area where the dogs run wild.
Nobodys getting back there without a nice bite to go home with.
Except,us o__o;
They'll also bark, and they have a LOUD bark and my neighbors are always checking up on them to make sure everything is fine.

You wouldn't put one outside? But then how are you going to get inside if you get locked out? You'd have to break a window or something. Or shove someone small through a half open window. -Has horrible flashbacks.- D= I suppose that would be better than getting all your valuables stolen though.

Hiding a key near your dogs isn't a bad idea. Big dogs are usually pretty effective at keeping thieves away. They normally like easy jobs, right? xD

Just hand the key to a trusted neighbor, if you lock yourself out, just walk up to their house and ask for it.

Do people on Menewsha even know where you live?

Emoticon -
Not a bad idea either. Kinda sucky if they weren't home at the time though.

Well, if I lived in a brick house, I would put it inside a loose brick that was near the door, but not to obvious. For other houses, maybe somewhere like on top of the door ledge. But I don't think anything can beat the old key-under-the-rug routine.

I know some people who have those for their cars so they don't get locked out. It's pretty handy.

Yesh handy!
 But they don't work for plastic cars like the saturn and scion. And its kinda dangerous because car thieves check for that first. -bye-bye car-

...Plastic cars? That sounds incredibly...crumply. o.O
True, it would be one of the first places to check right after the visor thing. xD I imagine that thieves would look for that on houses as well. They probably keep themselves up to date on all the things out there to hide keys, you know?

I don't have a spare key, but if i did, i'd hide it in our summer house at the top of the garden.
Thankfully i've never been locked out.

let me tell you, if i had a spare key, i would put it somewhere in the flower beds =]

i don't know, never really need one here because there's usually someone always home, so its kind of pointless.

considering i don't even have a key to my own house,
i'm fairly certain we don't have a spare key outside. >_>
i moved in with my grandma six months ago,
and she decided to never make me a key. D:
but my mom doesn't have a spare key outside either.
i don't really know where i'd hide a spare key though.
we've never kept keys outside,
cause most places are so easy to guess.

I think my key has gone down the back of the sofa along with my locker key never to be seen again or it might be hung up I'm not sure. When I find it I'm going to tie it to myself with a big bit of string. I'm going to tie it to my wrist.

Me? Hm.. I think I would hide a Spare key in a Box that is on my door. But I would have the box locked and the key to the lock would be hidden.

I would hide the lock key inside the door itself, its the last place anyone would think to look. I would have it in a slit on the side panel of the door so no one would notice it, and the slit would be covered of course by some decorative design. No one would even think of looking under a Screwed in design so I would make it so that it looks like it is screwed in, but it wont be so it would be removed with ease.

The best place is if you have a fence or a rail near your door. Use a combination lock box. Those work well, especially ones that can't be key-opened.

We gave a spare to our neighbors, my parents, and a friend who lives nearby so if we get locked out and the neighbors aren't home we cna call a friend or family member to let us in.

When I need to leave a key for someone to get into the house I hide it in some of the furniture on our porch and tell them where I put it - I change what furniture and where every time.

I once left a key hidden outside overnight and I slept terribly thinking someone found the key and was in the house - no way could I leave one outside all the time.

Since my house ketys are on my car keys there's not much of a chance i would be coming home and not have my key- since i would need my car keys as well and I never leave home without them.

I hid my spare key all the way behind my house in a special compartment in a bird house in a tree. It's a little complicated and high up the tree, so it's very unlikely for anyone to randomly find it.

My spare keys are both handy and close by. My first set of spares are kept in my grammas enterance hall in the box on the wall where keys live. *nods* She lives only 5 mins down the road. But, lest I be too late/early to catch her my second set of spares is only a phonecall and 12 miles away.... on the fireplace of my mommies house! My daddy will jump in his daddy mobile and zip off over to me and gimme my spares at strange hours :P

My gramma has the spares for my parents house too...
And my dad has the spares for my grammas house...
Gramma has the spares for Aunt sues house...

We don't have a spare key and I don't think we'd ever put one outside because I live in Tampa and it has a high crime rate.

I had a friend that hid a key on their back porch. It was in a really hard place to find. They were the only people I knew that did it.
