Well I thought this was an interesting topic to discuss, I have been tempted myself to go and get one, after my brother in law had his...then I read about it...
http://www.ada.org/public/topics/piercing.asp

Quote:
From hairstyles, to clothing, tattoos to jewelry, today's youth are making a fashion statement. But those that want to look cool with oral piercing may be looking to their dentists and physicians for help afterwards.

Common symptoms after oral piercing include pain, swelling, infection, an increased flow of saliva and injuries to the gum tissue. If a blood vessel was in the path of the needle during the piercing, severe and difficult-to-control bleeding can result. For some, chipped or cracked teeth, blood poisoning or even blood clots can occur. For many, the swelling of the tongue is a common side effect. And in extreme cases, a severely swollen tongue can actually close off the airway and prevent breathing.

Unfortunately, many young people with oral piercings don't realize that these alarming side effects could happen to them. So, skip the mouth jewelry and let your healthy smile make your fashion statement.
So...what do you think?

You should quote that, since you didn't type it. :P

Do you mean pierced on the tong, or like the lip?

My sister got her tongue pierced...even though my mom
didn't want her too. She's bad. Bad girl...xD

Urgh, I'm not at all fond of piercing. I mean, if people want one done, that's their lookout, but I've seen enough infected piercings to be put off for life. You've got to be absolutely fastidious about cleanliness, especially if it's somewhere like your mouth where you're often putting external objects into it.
Individual discretion, I suppose, but it seems a bit unnecessary. And it isn't particularly unique or rebellious either. It's always a bit annoying when teenagers decide they'll strike out against the norm, and do so by making themselves look just like their friends.

Actually, I would never have my tongue pierced, although a friend of mine does. She likes to click the bar against her teeth to annoy people.

And I quoted it already :)

Well, most people don't really care about their health, they just do it because everyone else does it to be cool. D;

My sister got her belly button pierced too ( the same one ) and she got an infection. That would really suck if the same thing happened with her tongue/mouth. D;

I really really wanted a lip piercing for a while, but then I heard about all of the nasty side effects, and I though it over, and I decided that when piercing evolves a little more, and maybe they develop safer ways to do it, maybe then I'll get it done.

I had a friend who pierced her lip herself with a safety pin. It pretty icky looking.

-UGH- I've heard too many stories about piercings being ripped out. ((even earrings)).
Infections are even worse though. Now what always cracks me up is imagining what some of these people are going to look like when they're fifty, when they're sixty...so on and so forth.

I had my labret pierced for awhile. I had no problems with it, thought I ended up taking it out because it was really difficult and I almost had it ripped out by a corn dog. That's when I decided that it wasn't worth it.

I have my lip pierced, and have had it for about 3 years. I've never had my tongue pierced but I know a lot of people that have had it for years without problem.

Infection
If you go to a proper piercer who uses properly sterilised needles (one-time use only) and uses an autoclave, you should be good from the get-go.
After that, protecting from infection is your own responsibility.

"What are you going to look like in 50 years?"
Depending on the anatomy of your face, lip piercing scars will show either a tiny little bit or barely at all. Because of how my face is shaped, mine doesn't show at all.
And... a tongue piercing scar won't show at all.
Also, because of the nature of the mouth, oral piercings heal very quickly.

Tooth chipping
Placed properly, oral piercings generally do not chip your teeth. I've had no problems with mine. My dentist agrees.

Pain/swelling
This goes away after the first little bit. The pain is negligible and you'll swell for a few days. Nothing huge though. You might look like a bit of a tool, but you'll have something you really like, potentially for years.

And there's more to getting pierced because you're a dumb teenager who wants to "rebel against the norm". For some it's a spiritual thing, and some people just like the aesthetic effect. I'm not super-pierced, but I love the way humans can modify their bodies, and I'm definitely very much into getting myself pierced.
Also, considering that I live in a large metropolis where piercings and tattoos are very common, and I learned from an early age that my parents are pretty cool with them, it has nothing to do with rebelling and wholly to do with a choice to make my body more beautiful than it already is.

Anti-oral piercing (or anti-piercing in general) propaganda bothers me. As long as you get it done right and take proper care of it, there shouldn't be too much that goes seriously wrong with it.

On the contrary to not showing: Ear gauging, another popular one, is probably going to stay, as is tattooing. Many of the things we do to our body's are permanent, however small the mark. And the idea of some of the particularly heavy pierced still dripping in metal is...amusing to me. Very much so.

I think another problem is -getting it done right the first time-. A lot of people who have these problems -aren't- investigating where they go, or what they might react to. Sort of like the henna craze.

XP Oral piercings?
I find it disgusting... annoying especially when they click the barbell on their tongue against their teeth.

And on the lips! >.> Not very sightly. Plus, I see some people have a lot of problems eating and stuff... though they say they are used to it. I rather not learn to get used to it.

How do people kiss with it was something I used to wonder all the time.

Plus, girls will have to remove it if they ever want kids when they get pregnant.

With job interviews, you give a bad impression going to one with oral piercings (and visible tattoos and overdone amount of piercings)

-Is it worth it when you look back and you're sixty?

I'm not into piercings (I don't even have my ears pierced) or tattoos, but it really doesn't bother other people and it is their own body they are doing it to. So, I guess I can't ridicule one doing it. It is perfectly legal.

There are too many unlicensed tattoo and piercing parlors. If you go get either one, please don't just find the cheap one. Go to a professional to get it right. Nothing is more disgusting than an infection.

I would never want to get my tongue pierced... ick. No. The only piercing I really want is a lip piercing, and even so, I'd just want the little balls. Not a whole ring. Those are.. icky.

I do really like some piercings, but I'm not into the whole face smothered with metal thing. There's a certain limit. I want some piercings, but just some small ones.

This topic was about oral piercings, not tattoos or stretching (NOT gauging; gauge is a measurement, not a verb). Yes, stretching your ears is, after a certain point, going to stay, and tattoos are DEFINITELY going to stay, but that wasn't the original point of the topic.

But I definitely agree with you. People really aren't investigating where they go. But to be honest? It's THEIR responsibility to think for a minute -- just a minute! -- before they go and get needles stuck into their bodies.

@ life in red and black: although I won't necessarily wholly disagree with you about jobs (I take my piercings out when I go to interviews and ask about piercing policies when I get the job later), it also depends on where you're going for the job and what kind of job it is. When I had an interview at the Gap I took my piercings out. When I had an interview at an independent restaurant in the middle of the fashion district of the large city I live in, I didn't bother. (And I got the job anyway.)

And what do oral piercings (the original POINT of this topic) have to do with kids?

PS Kissing works just fine with oral piercings.

You are awesome

Which surface piercings have you got? I'd love to see pictures. I think surface piercings are great, but I don't know if they'd suit me. I'm totally awful at taking care of my piercings.

Ooh, cute :3
One of my friends from work had an anti-eyebrow for a while, I thought it was great! She had to take it out though, it was rejecting.

Maybe this topic should be changed so that it's about piercings in general...? That seems to be the road it's heading down.

I don't like piercings, they make me cringe. I know a lot of people who have piercings and all I do is stare at it, I can't concentrate on the person.
My son has a friend who had his nipple pierced and he was there to watch, well he said his friend screamed when they did the piercing. I'm kinda glad he saw that because he doesn't want to get anything pierced. My son does have a gage in his ear, and it seems to get infected sometimes. And it smells bad. I told him when he gets older his ear will have a big hole in it and it will dangle. But oh well at least he has no tattoos or piercings.

o.0 that's kind of scary!!

I considered getting a piercing on my tongue once...and it was just a consideration. I only have my ears done. But I don't think I would ever really do it...it looks kind of cool, but there are so many problems that could happen. My cousin had her tongue pierced and she had a lot of infections and such....and then you hear horror stores about how people have to get things cut off...(but that was only a strange case and was once...that I know about. >.<)
