xD I always thought that fish just ate plants. Now I can say that all of them are carnivores!

How strange.
Elmo is a cute name for a fish.
It reminds me of Sesame Street.

So that means if we were all fish; either I would eat one of you, or one of you would eat me?

You've apparently never been to a fish store. o.o

Fish are cannibals. It's the main problem Flink has with fish when she gets more than one type. Especially tetras! They're monsters. The people who sold the fish, a well known local pet store, said they were fine with the fish Flink purchased along with them.

Later, Flink noticed that one of the fish, nontetra, was losing its fins slowly and looked like it got sucked into the filter. Sooo, Flink switched filters to one that still cleaned well, but had less suction.

Then she woke up to not only the tetras, but ALL of the other fish in the aquarium eating on one of their own. She wasn't horrified, of course since she'd seen it happen in pet stores, but she thought that was the fish going stir crazy or something. So, she asked the people who sold it and they'd switched people, the new girl told Flink that tetras were known for only "nibbling" on fins of other fish, which was a blatant lie.

Now she sticks to a hermit crab (not a fish she knows) but they're also cannibals. BUT, they're really easy to care for when you get into the swing of it. (Only problem is finding stuff he'll actually -eat-)

well, you know the saying - big fish eat little fish. many fish eat other fish. in fact that's why you need to separate a lot of fish in fish tanks so they don't eat the littler fish.

Im not surprised. fish are always eating other fish, its how the food chain works in the coean. besides canabalisim isnt just in the fish species. lots of other creatures eat their own kind even their own young. crocodiles and allegators for example. but if any one remembers the mad cow disease. that was because they were feeding cows, well cows... it messed with them terribly. its no wonder fish arent that smart best not to remember what your eating.

  • I've seen lots of goldfish eat other goldfish. Usually they eat the other fish if they get too hungry or the other fish are weak. Usually it's starts as just pecking at them, then they start pecking at the tail, fins, scales, etc, etc. Kinda gross really.

They are cannibals because they're omnivores... not enough information? Alright, So Fishes it fish who are smaller than them but on the other hand they eat kelp, seaweeds and other plants underwater so it makes them look like omnivores, and omnivores are animals who eat plants, fruits, vegetables and animals right? but not most fish are omnivores and cannibals, for example the little guppy, it doesn't eat another fish now don't it, it eats bits of kelp left in the see, but it gets turned around when big fishes eat them! so not all fishes are cannibals, by the way, I think fishes were found to be cannibals a long time ago, some people ((like us)) just didn't know about it ((stupid not giving information scientists!!!}} and thats the and of my answer. though some fishes are carnivores and herbivores though, it depends on they're size and they're faces, whether there faces look hungry for blood, or hungry for organic matter. ((just joking about the blood part though, no offense carnivore peoples and carnivore fishes, I am a carnivore to so no offense to myself am I right?! A perfect sentence without a mistaked...never mind))

Yeah, I knew that.
It didn't really surprise me.
I hadn't really though about what they could make fish food out of, other than seaweed. So that kinda answered a question rather than creating more.

Fish (with the excepting of whales which eat krill and are mammals anyway) and aquatic creatures eat other species/same species as long as they can fit them in their gobs xD. What else can they eat, if they're carnivorous/omnivorous and are surrounded by marine life.

Though I have never experienced any fish of mine showing cannibalistic tendancies.

Goldfish have a reputation for being fairly sweet among the inexperienced, but as a member of the Carp family they're actually perfectly content to eat pretty much anything they can put in their mouths, including other goldfish, they also do happily ravage each others fins, but yeah, most fish do like the protein and other nutrients they get from their diet. Cicilids especially. Also a lot of fish like Oscars kind of need at least a partially 'carnivore' diet, and a shrimp based fish food helps enhance their colors. It's just how they are.

Well... I also have fish. In the beginning of this year I bought a couple of cichlids. after a while they made some babies. When their kids grew a little bit, them made babies once more, in order to feed the previous generation 0___o I was shocked. Plus must say that I fed them properly.

Yea, I know. Gross, huh? :(

But that's why, whenever you go to Wal-Mart, you always see a few dead ones floating at the top, with the rest of the live ones eating it. I guess they think "Hey, this smells an awful lot like my food", or they're just stupid enough to eat anything.

Once I had a pet fish who was giving birth. It was the strangest thing I have ever seen. But as the infant fish came out most of them were immediately gobbled up by the other fish in the tank. Some of them were eaten just cause they happened to float into the bigger fishs' (or fish's? How does that work? Silly English....) mouths, but a few times the big fish actually meant to eat the fish.

Although.... they were different species of fish, so I don't think that quite counts as cannibalism.

So...really it's just another animal byproduct, like feeding pigs other pigs, and chickens other chickens in their food.

Personally, I think it's gross. All my fish died, (last week i think), and well I guess I won't have to live with the fact that my fish are eating other fish.

Weird that you posted this...All four of my apartments guppies died this week (they got sick and are old). Anyways! I was gone and came back and they (our gold fish Super-Man and Batman) had eaten 75% of one of the dead guppies.

;_; The poor Teen Titans are all dead now. It started out with 5 and then one randomly disappeared and now the last four are gone. The Titan Tower we be lonely now. (seeing as how Super-Man and Batman are too fat to fit in the guppie cave).

Gush- Yeah. It is sad. I hate when animals die. What was worse was when Diana (our Wonder Woman) died. She was only a couple of weeks old.

The other fish are now over a year old. I don't think guppies live long anyways.
