Labels are for soup cans!

Tell me, do you label some? Are you stereotypic? If so, why? If not, why? Do you think labeling is wrong?

My answer:

Personally, I think labeling people is very judgemental and VERY WRONG! I think that people are equal. Sure there are the rich people that buy the fashionable clothing (that we know as "preppies") but know, they shouldn't be labeled, they are just people that buy more expensive clothing. Then like the nerds, they don't dress that way because they don't have the need or want to, or even if they do, they're not nerds or geeks for knowing everything or using fantastic vocabulary, it's just their personality, what they want to do. Goths and emo stereotypes, I don't even want to go in that discussion. I hate people that discriminate guys who wear tight jeans or girls who have "emo" haircuts although they're just like any ordinary haircut. If your following me say "I." Ask questions if you want to hear more. My hand is ready to fall off!

Yeah, I made a fifty page short story about stereotypes and what it can cause.

Staff Sergeant 11-27-2007 10:57 PM

The worst stereotypes are ones from Iraqis overseas. We would always get called "Demon!" or "Terrorist! USA are terrorist" just because we were soldiers.
It's kinda odd though, looking at it from their point of view.

But that's an entirely different topic.

Smiley160 11-27-2007 10:57 PM

i dont label anything unless its like IMPORTANT AND I DONT WANT ANYONE TO TOUCH IT OR ALL GO CRAZY sorry for caps hehe

Yep, a completely different topic.

kumi 11-27-2007 11:01 PM

yeah is it a bad thing to even joke about steryotypes in general?...cause i guess they can lead to bad feelings

Karine 11-27-2007 11:02 PM

i don't label anyone anything, unless mentally thinking when i look at someone: They might not go anywhere in life. xD But people label me weird or emo, since i never smile. i don't smile because i don't even notice that i'm not, and i hate my smile. xD

Risque 11-27-2007 11:03 PM

Being judgmental sucks, period.
No good can come from labeling someone.

I saw this logo at loserkids.com a while ago, it went "labels are for clothes, not people" which is similar to the soup bit. xD

kumi 11-27-2007 11:04 PM

lolz yeah i get called emo alot cause most of the time i keep my feelings to myself but really im shy ive been told i have a possesed look

Everyone labels people. You might do it without even realizing it. People can't say they don't label others, because they might.. they could include label themselves as well. We(girls mostly) sometimes think we are fat, when we are either average, or just a little over weight. That is labeling yourself.

Girls, boys...Those are labels as well if you think about it. Everything is labeled, hair..etc. Some of it is wrong, other labels are needed.

I'm not really a stereotype. I like videogames, shopping, clothes, pretty things, flowers, drawing, painting, sewing... watching Ninja warrior... and I'm a lesbian. I don't fit the stereotype very well, though the main part about it that I fit is the liking other girls part. Then there is the man-hating part. I don't hate men. I just don't find them attractive, and to be honest they scare me a little. Yelling, being loud, swearing...Nice guys are the only ones I hang out wth.

Is labeling wrong...Yes and no. I think I explained it enough *shrugs*

Aurora 11-27-2007 11:32 PM

I hate steriotyping and think it's wrong to judge people like that, and I try not to, but sometimes I say something and don't think about it..^^; I just hate it when people are really mean to others and make fun of them and things like that...>.>
..I agree somewhat with fuyami_saito..

Mousey 11-27-2007 11:39 PM

"Labeling people" is a sticky issue. People label themselves constantly but get angry as soon as someone else "labels" them ... usually only as something that they themselves don't see as true.

People always form instant impressions about you, consciously or unconsciously, just from the way you present yourself.

Thunder 11-28-2007 12:35 AM

I don't think labeling is wrong, it's when you can't see passed those labels. For example, when I see someone decked out in black with chains hanging off their pants, they're the stereotypical goth. I recognize them as the stereotypical goth, nothing I can do about that. Once someone gives a name to a certain group of people, that name sticks even if you don't actually say anything about it out loud. Now as for the wrong part, hating someone because they look like they belong to a certain group would be wrong. Not to mention that your first impression could be completely off. While the label automatically pops into my head, I usually try to get to know someone and that label might be thrown out the window. My friends say I used to dress like a goth, but I've always been more of a redneck, honestly. xD So, there's nothing wrong with labeling people. It's when you make a decision on what that person's attitude must be like and what you think of them just because of that label without actually getting to know them is when it becomes wrong.

emraldprincess 11-28-2007 12:41 AM

i know i know but i lable people. i dont think its that wrong the way i do it. i lable the popular girls who pretend to care when you lable them when they really dont because they think there the prettyest people in the world. NEWSFLASH they are SO SO SO SOOOOOOOOOO not! yes lable me as stupid but what a sterio type?

Joshua 11-28-2007 02:32 AM

Well, honestly I'm really not a sterotype, but some times it might slip only if I see something crazy. For instance, I'm friends with gothic/emo people but if i see someone with crazy clothes on with a huge huge huge mohawk i might say ew thats so gross or something. It slips, but i really dont mean to do it.

disturbed66 11-28-2007 04:26 AM

Lols, i actully kinda like stero types. Just some of the odd labels that are thrown out there.. like sean.. and emo.. took me awhile and alot of asking around to figure those two out.
But staro labling has been around since ever.
Nothin u can do abhout it other then sit back and laugh!

Always fun what other think of you!
So fair i've been labeld 'mother hater!' "killer gothic' 'dork'

funny thing is. My mother bought me my favort trench coat that gives me the lable of mother hater!
Lols

Bad thing of stero types......false inpreshions.. like the ole judging a bok by its cover thing.. yea

Rainiy 11-28-2007 04:40 AM

I think that everybody sort of stereotypes on some level xD; Or maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better. :3 I definitely stereotype, though I give myself a good talking to when I catch myself doing it.

Usually it's just stupid stuff though -- like, there's this guy in my gym class and every time I look at him, he looks like a Backstreet Boy reject to me. I also stereotype African American girls in tight clothing and boys who run around with their pants around their knees.

I try to remind myself that I don't know anything about these people, but sometimes it takes effort. But I'm okay with that. At least I'm making the effort, right? ^____^;

ForkoFried 11-28-2007 01:24 PM

Well personally, i really can't stand that stupid saying about labels and soup cans,
but that's just because all the stupid wanna-be emo's put posters up all over my school with that saying some years ago...
anyways...
even though i'm probablly the most discriminated against person in my school (when i'm there)
i still have the horrible habbit to discriminate back against rich people in my community.
Not all over the world, but just where i live, i've never met a rich person who wasn't a total asshole (and my town is loaded with them)
so i tend to hate all or most of them...
I know, it makes me a horrible hypocrite, but if you were in my shoes, you'd hate em all too, lawl!

clock 11-29-2007 02:24 AM

"I" xD

That's true, but sometimes it's hard not to judge someone.
It just happens automatically with me. But I'd never
say it out loud or anything, I'd just think about it.

mystic kiwi 11-29-2007 02:29 AM

I label as a joke. I never seriously label someone because I don’t think anyone really fits into one certain label. Plus, I think it’s dumb to group people together. What’s funny is those people that avoid certain people that they think line up with certain labels.

Mystrelia 11-29-2007 02:47 AM

I do find some people who fit into one stereotypical group. I'm all the time telling my husband that you can't paint every one of the same race, for example, with the same wide brush because it just doesn't work. On the other hand, I'll sure refer to my husband, our son, a brother-in-law and a nephew as geeky because they just are. *grins* And oh my, you ought to know the amount of "red necks" I know! I could also tell big stories about the red neck geeks I've met over my lifetime.

I think to a certain extent, labeling helps describe a person without going into a lot of detail. But at the same time I like to be really careful with labeling and not use it in a derogatory manner.

neur0mancer 11-29-2007 03:14 AM

labeling people happens, and I dont know why people take it so seriously.
The only people Ive seen who are actually offended by labels are the people who also say that theyre stupid and not worth anyones time.

If theyre that stupid and that insignificant, why do you get your feelings hurt by them?
"Labels" and stereotypes happen every day. OUTSIDE of high school. You know, when life starts to matter. Its something youre going to have to live with.

Today I was talking in a forum and this girl was receiving a barrage of insults I dare not type out on Menewsha, just to be nice, but then the person called her a prep. The person said that was WAY out of line.
=/
Is being called a prep worse than being called every swear word in the book? I mean, come on. A little word can't mean THAT much to you...
