Most of the time generic food just doesn't taste as good as brand names, but sometimes it can taste the same or even better. What are your experiences with generic food?

2 things I can think of that are better generic are both the GV brand at Walmart. Generic vanilla wafers and potato wedges both taste way better. Generic slices of cheese on the other hand, yuck.

When I was in high school I took this home ec. class and we did this activity about generic foods. The teacher had is do taste tests with generic foods and non-generic foods. We didn't know which was which until after we voted for one or the other and most of the time the generic brand actually came out on top.

Wow that's really weird. It's pretty impressive that they can be both cheaper and better tasting.

I've heard that sometimes the generic brands of something and the name brand are actually made by the same company and are completely the same product. Some things do taste better with the named product but most of the time I don't notice, or the generic actually tastes better

A lot of generic food I've tried taste better or just as good as the normal brand...like peanut butter, chips, and pop. I personally like generic chicken and beef pot pies better than the normal brand...and fudge bars from my grocery store under the store's name is A LOT better than the normal brands.

To me, the big home-made looking Kroger cookies taste a
lot better than Chips Ahoy cookies. o__o; Maybe that's
just because I'm sick of the Chips Ahoy.

I go for the butterball honey baked turkey breast rather than the generic turkey at Dominick's. It looks rather processed to me. lol

Plus, Butterball has succeeded in making the only turkey breast that I actually LIKE. It's almost like eating really good candy.

For most food items, the generic food brand does not taste much different, except for the fact that it is cheaper. However I do not really care for the generic brad of pop tarts. They have too much inside stuff (whatever is inside the crust, I do not want to think about what it is made out of), so when you put them in the toaster, the insides gush out when you bit it. It is really gross. So they must be eaten cold. That is my story about generic food.

I'll eat the generic brand basically all the time.
And I do, because it is cheaper.

But there are some things that the generic brands just do WRONG.
Like... Ranch dressing. I will not eat anything other than Hidden Valley. XS

I like my off-brand cereal better than the brand name stuff. :D Marshmallow Treasures FTW!

I normally don't have a problem with generic food. The only thing I can think of that I have to have the real thing of is Kraft's mac & cheese. And it has to be the original; the easy mac tastes different to me.

i like generic food better, because it doesn't have as much fillers and harmful chemicals as the name brands do. :D

I'm not even sure if we have generic at our store. Usually there'll be a few name brands that we push a little harder, mainly because Safeway owns them (they own my grocery chain as well). Primo Taglio products, Organics products, etc etc.

If they're already owned by the company who owns the store, do they count as generics?

Our pastor's wife is such a skilled baker and would share some of her secrets to the members. There's this particular flour that is often ignored in favor of the branded ones which she recommended and actually did wonders with baking cakes. My mom was amazed with the results.

SOmetiems I eat generic brands if it looks like it would be good or if I have already tried it before. But with things like hot dogs and some lunch meats, I have to go with brands that I know of and know that taste good.

Though some Safeway brand items don't taste that bad.

I buy a lot of generic brand foods and they taste just the same if not better. I don't usually notice a difference with most of them, although I really didn't like the generic brand cottage cheese that I've bought, but it wasn't bad enough where I refused to buy it again.

Sometimes I switch it up and buy a name brand, but it just depends on what's there, I guess. It doesn't really matter to me.

The only things that I consistently buy the name brands are drinks. My husband HAS TO have his diet coke, and I have to have my Fresca. Bottled water isn't really an issue, but there are certain brands that I just can't stand so I stick with the ones I know I like. I'd hate to bring home 2 cases of some other brand of water, generic or otherwise, only to find out that I can't bring myself to drink it because it tastes like crap. o_o;

  • I buy whatever is healthier. If their nutrition facts and ingredients label look the same, I buy whatever is cheaper.

Great Value milk is actually the only milk I'll drink. I'm very very very picky about milk.
And great value also makes a canned vegetable mix that I love. ^^

I love generic foodstuffs, and many of the things in our pantry are Great Value. However, the generic cereals just don't taste as good. Also, there's so much in the bag (because it's impossible to get a decent sized one) that I find I grow tired or sick of the cereal before I'm half done with it.
Also, a lot of generic things aren't as healthy, even if they do save you money.

I eat a lot of the generic cereals. They usually come in huge bags, while I only get about four bowls out of a regular brand. They don't taste any different to me, so why pay more for less? That's just silly. However, I can't eat the off brand Cheez-Its. Those just aren't as cheesy.

I don't really notice the differences. I'm cheap, so I get what's cheaper.
