Fundraiser ideas~
Though the "Season of Giving" is usually associated with the time around Thanksgiving and Christmas, I've got to get people to be more "giving" year-round. >.< I'm on the newspaper staff in my school. We face problems such as no publicity in our school, few readers, teachers who throw out our newspapers instead of giving them to their students, and the principal practically hates us - she even came in to yell at our article XP. On top of that is money. Even though we are part of the school, and we have seven issues every year, we receive zilch from the school. Not a single penny. And it is always hard for us to find ads and sponsors for our newspaper. And we don't want a whole page of ads either - readers tend to hate that. SOooo, we've been trying to go towards fund raising instead. For car washes, people are giving us excuses such as water shortage and that their boss won't let them... We've been trying to do some during lunch but like I said before, our principal hates us and won't approve anything yet. SO, we need ideas, since I thought my friend's DANCE-A-THON idea was cute. People pay us and we dance for hours and get publicity from the local newspaper too! We want to give half the money to charity and the other half to fund our newspaper! So Discuss: -Fund raising ideas -Fun fund raisers you've done -What do you think of people out there begging for money during fund raisers? Do you donate? -What clubs are you in? Do you guys have money troubles? -etc. Use that head of yours! Thanks in advance for ideas~ |
I'm not good with the whole idea thing, but for the newspaper itself you should look around and see what students are in to right now. Like for example 80% of the student body likes fashion. Include more fashionable articles.
That springs an idea though. Find out what the kids are you school like and try and start a fund raiser out of that. Again if they like fashion then put on a little fashion show using 'trends of 2007' as a topic or something. If you relate to them, while still mixing important events that your paper had before then it'll still be a good paper just one that the kids will start picking up more often. |
@PeachesDied - you'd think that, but we've done the fashion article quite a number of times and found it redundant...XP We have few readers because, until this year, it's hard to find our paper besides the trash can... we're not allowed to just stand in the atrium and pass them out either... Fashion shows belong to Debate Team apparently, since they've been doing it and we can't just steal their idea (it'll look like it) nor do it at the same time and get flamed at... wah! Thanks for the advice though - some girl wanted to do "Trends of 2007" and our editor shot it down. |
Well, I'm not in the school newspaper here at my school, but I really enjoy reading the articles they have^^.
For example, the last newspaper interviewed different types of students, including a teenage mother and what her life is like (I thought it was very interesting) as well as a girl's volleyball star, bookworm, and more. They also did an article on smoking and got quotes from students who smoke and their thought on it. Hmm.. thinking of more... Oh! They interviewed teachers and they had a lot of different polls. They also did a... I guess.. Q&A? They asked a teacher a question, and they recorded their answer, and also gave a random student the same question, and recorded their answer too. Then they showed which was correct :P it was really funny seeing the teacher's answers, because a lot of the students were right XD. Plus, the questions were pretty easy. Hope that helps^^ |
What about other things? Fashion isn't the only thing in the whole world. Maybe like a 'rundown of your top *random number* tv shows.' or music or whatever else there is.
Side note! Damn that debate team. They got in the way when I was in school and they are still there lol. Anyway, finding all kinds of things that the students like and then playing it to your advantage isn't a bad things cause I know how it sounds. But if you try and get more student friendly it should work out well. You could even go teacher friendly. 'Teacher of the month' Selected by the students of what not. I think you should try and get the editor to like the idea of the 'trends of 07' thing cause a lot of kids may be willing to help if it means they are in the paper. I think... |
Without prior consent of the principal on the article and the use of the interview, we are NOT ALLOWED (at all) from interviewing teachers for comments for the newspaper - Our principal is crazy, and that's an example. The reason? Our article was how our parking lot was getting too small - it was never allowed to see the light of the day since she banned us from printing it (it was a really good article though!) I guess it's because you guys aren't in newspaper. Our principal would throw a fit if we interviewed smokers or a teenage mother. We did interview a dancer though, and we are interviewing more students because that idea is popular. >.< Wah! I need fundraising ideas more though!!! @PeachesDied - We did the tv shows, next issue is movies, and we did students' shoutouts for their favorite teacher. She shot down clothing, but might like trends... hmm. |
It sounds to me like you principal is psycho. You should find a teacher that totally supports the paper, other than your editor, and ask him, her, or them to help you out. Cause it sounds like your principal is not helping at all. It's not fair. Even though it's a school the principal isn't allowed to censor the paper that much. That's what the freedom of speech thing was for. If worse comes to worse you could bring his 'neglect', toward the paper public. It's kind of a sneaking thing to do, but it'll show that you dead serious about your school's paper.

I agree with peaches, your principal is a psycho D:!

Ahh, I forgot people usually think my journalism teacher as "Editor". I was referring to my seniors who are in charge of each section of the newspaper... Heh, my journalism teacher felt it was unfair for us too, so she showed us a website that helps students get their journalism rights. But it's a huge risk and big decision to do something like that. We could end up being banned altogether. In defiance, we just printed an issue with two front page articles that our principal is still fuming about. The headliner is about our school's condition and need for repairs and clean up. The other front pager is about students' rights according to press... lol. |
lol Now that's great.
But you guys should really think about taking a stand. Is it better to have a constantly censored paper or no paper at all. That's pretty much the risk you're taking, but the out come would be to have a free paper. So I mean that in itself is something that you, as a group, should discuss. |

I think the principal is just too proud to post anything improper or bad about the school. I don't know, that's just what it looks like to me. You could always start a petition with the school. I'm sure the students want a better newspaper too^^ |
Sell candy, doughnuts..
my old higschool newspaper used to put in art from the students and held puzzles, and the 1st three winners had their names put in the next paper. Hope that helps. |
Raffle tickets. I find that most stores are willing to donate prizes for a spalsh of publicity. And I find that when you are selling tickets that they just seem to go buy so fast.
Hold like a Coffehouse/Concert. We do it all the time at our school for the Music Program and we make a fair bit of money from it, and it is a whole lot of fun. |
You could do a art auction, if art's big in your area. You could rent a VFW hall or something like that and hold it there. You'd just have to get sponsers to help pay for the rent and all that. Maybe try going to different art galleries in the area and ask for suggestions there.
Another thing that made a lot of money for me when I did fundraising for the local animal shelter was bake sales. Pet pictures also made a lot of money, especially the ones with Santa. |
That sounds a very, very tricky situation.
But you people DO have rights and such. There has to be some higher authority who are in charge of such a situation. Sounds like your principal is a very, very conservative type with a big peeve over reality: the sort who wants to keep giving a positive image of what's going on than tell the reality of it. What kind of a school is this by the way? Have you thought of running mini events such as garage sales? You could always Cake sales/raffles are always nice things though. A teacher I know is such an expert at raising money. She manages to gather the talents in the area - singing, dancing, theater, etc - and have them perform. Depending on how bonded your school is, you can ask people to all pitch in a little performance and manage something together. Though since people don't seem to be that caring it might be difficult. Do you people have a website? Publish a wee bit there... Spread the word by mouth coupled by also publishing by paper? If you talk to people one person at a time personally...they might understand better and be more aware. It's how some of the school political parties do it. Or host meet ups where your staff do short lectures. It doesn't have to be big or anything. Just like over lunch or anything. Unless...that's outlawed. O3o; Though I'm curious. Why are your school mates very apathetic and uncaring... Do they know or are they just playing dumb to the problems around your school? I hope your entire community at large isn't as 'uncaring' and if you do branch out to them will listen and realize that something is wrong and ought to be done though! : < Since if your place is just uncaring and not wanting to do anything, it might make whatever you plan a flop. Though some fundraiser activities I've read up in the past DO succeed but the cause they advocate say---human rights concert fundraiser and awareness, people went, lots of tickets were sold BUT the people were only there to party than to care about the people being aimlessly killed because of their political stand. Fund raising is NOT begging. If you outright go up to people to ask for money a.ka. donations that is begging. Back to that teacher of mine, she said that if you lack money you make money. You don't beg or ask. Our hands were made to work and do not open palm beg for things. If we simply rely on solicitations from wealthy people, it simply won't do. Not to mention, nothing in the world is free---if you want money, you have to barter something. Hence perform...work, show promise. Sing! O_O; I'm not part of any organization -willingly part of since some are you're an auto member bleh- at the moment back when I was in HS, the Debate club were always without a budget. Our moderator had to shell out her own money to register us. Our budget was never there... So we shelled out our own money---did car pools or commuted to the place where we would attend lectures or debate. : < Heck, they barely supported us focusing more on the physical sports... Our trainers rarely stayed for long and we were always in the dark. Sad... But we did good though. Somehow. We planned stuff like that but never got to work them. Instead we simply put our foot down and demanded to be supported, promising to succeed. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. .___. |
