Well, you could always get another tank and get fish for you and let your husband get a hamster. That way you wont have to bother with it. ^^
If you get fish, DO NOT get a black shark, they are mean...well at least the one I had was. ._.

I agree with you completely about the fish. It's so relaxing to watch and you just never get bored of it.

I have three cats, two chinchillas and two dogs, a cocker spanial and a Australian Shepherd. My parents are also thinking of getting another puppy, a great Pyranees, so that the Aussie has someone to play with.

I personally love all of my pets. All of the cats love to lay all over my bed and love affection. Sure our female cat hates the two males with an extreme passion, but today I saw her laying with one of them so I think there is hope.

Our Aussie is still just a puppy but he loves to bother our overweight cocker and he has recently started marking the house which is a total pain. I bet you can't guess what is happening to him at the vet in a week or two.

Chinchilla's are the most awesome rodent in the entire world. Their big fluffy and cute, will stand up to the cats and love to hop around the room. Plus they take baths in dust, what more could you want?

I love all my pets, but because there are so many of them I usually feel guilty for not giving them as much attention as they deserve. Does anyone else ever feel that way?

I have had Hamsters, a rat, parrots, parakeets, Beta fish, white throat monitor lizards, and of course cats and dogs. all my life I've had animals

Right now i have 2 dogs, a cat and a snake

Bailey the corgi/chow
Hedwig the Mini dachshund
Stitch the black and white
And Naga the ball python.

All of them eat and live better then i do. Naga is actually the largest ball python have ever seen. about 5'7", and has graduated from small mice to medium rats

Bailey and Naga are rescues. Stitch and Hedwig are my girlfriends animals

We have fish - we actually have two tanks - a freshwater and a saltwater tank because my stepdad LOVES fish. lol. They're like his babies.

and we have a cat because my family loves cats. His name is Psycho and he's one of the cutest and craziest cats ever. I love him :D

I suggest fish.

They are very soothing to watch swim. <3
Get ones of different colors.

Salt water fish are great, but you have to clean the tank, so that can get annoying. D;

Awww, you shouldn't think too badly of rats because of one little incident. :(
There are NO "bad rats"... they're very intelligent and sensitive, and they probably just went a little stir-crazy from being in a cage that was too small or crowded, or not getting enough attention from you. They also may have been giving very clear rat-signals for "leave me alone right now" which you ignored... they get depressed and sulky just like people and prefer to be left alone sometimes.
My ratties are the best ever and they still nip my fingers if I've been busy for a day or two and haven't given them their out time. One is named "Mister Bitey", but I've never gotten a serious bite off of him, because I handle him respectfully. When he starts rearing to the side, chittering fearfully, and trying to fend me off when we're playing, he's ready to go back into the cage.
And, rats can gnaw through concrete and steel no problem. If four rats "attacked" you with any real malice, you would have no hand left. You got a love tap. I have a finger with permanent nerve damage (I can put a cigarette out on it and feel nothing) because I foolishly got in the middle of a rat dominance battle. x3

If you fear getting bitten, DON'T get a hamster. For one, they're not actually "holding" animals, and are better suited to watching their cute antics from afar... they have short attention spans and no memory, so they don't feel loyalty to their human. Hamster owners will whine and moan because I've said that, but its science... thats why hamsters will live together happily for a year, then suddenly munch their cagemate's brain on a whim. Your fingers are like so much tasty brain to a hamster.
Gerbils and mice are more intelligent, and rats are VASTLY more intelligent, and a better option if your boyfriend wants a pet he can snuggle and play with. Give rats a chance, they're awesome pets!

That preached, I have five rats of my own, two ferrets (talk about dumb, hee, love my stoopid furrets) and an opossum. Thaddeus (my possum-baby) is the BEST pet I've ever had... he sleeps in my lap for hours at a time, is intelligent, inquisitive, and loyal, and tells me how much he loves me by drooling all over my feet and any shoes I've left unattended. He's excessively polite and uses a litter box and walks neatly on a leash and wears a spiked collar with a little tag listing his name and address in case he gets lost. He's my cuddle-possum!
