I think you should inspect what you eat before you just say "Ooh look at this, let me put it in my mouth!"
|
I don't really pay attention to my food and that before I eat it. Like I check to see if it's bad and that, and I was fruit and vegetables and meat before I eat it but other than that I really don't care...though I think i should.
|
I'm really careful at what I eat, even if I love sweets and sometimes fast food, I eat healthy and balanced. I'm Italian so I follow a Mediterranean diet mixed with Japanese, Chinese and Korean diets! I'm afraid of poisoned food but I'm not obsessed about it, I care about hygiene and quality and freshness of foods and that's important and reassuring enough to me ♥

One thing is I wish that food was clearly labeled as to what is in it. Not like the chemical breakdown, but like "this product contains meat, dairy, eggs, glutton...."
I am vegetarian and somebody I know is allergic to glutton so it is really hard to shop. |
I agree Lily. I'm a vegetarian too, and it would be so helpful for them to say whether it has meat in it or not. A lot of things say "natural flavors" and it's hard to tell whether that means meat or vegetables. They put some things listed at the bottom...like "may contain soy, shellfish, etc", so it wouldn't be that big of a deal to add meat to the list.
Edit: Zen and Tonic: I can't find the original source for that, so I think it may have been changed (hopefully). I wrote a paper a couple of years ago and the original source's last name was Robbins, but I can't find anything on it online. I'm glad that inspectors are at least back to inspecting the meat...even if there aren't enough of them. |
I think I just do the usual kind of thing, really. I wash my fruits and vegetables, and you could not pay me a large enough sum to make me eat raw, bloody meat. The germs, oh god!
That being said, I also have that nonchalant habit of eating something I dropped on the floor. If I drop a chip or something, I blow it off and keep on snacking. A bit of floor dirt never really hurt anyone, but undercooking meat sure can. |

Just out of curiosity to everyone here, though - if the meat were irradiated to destroy all germs on it before it got to you, would you still eat it? |
I think the food safety scares are not really something to be bothered about. Except maybe if you'll get poisoned if you eat something. Maybe because there had been a lot of scares here in my country about Chinese food, claiming they contain harmful chemicals like formaline. I think there are political agendas behind these announcements. Because now China is getting richer and destroying their products' reputation would decrease their potential consumers. I mean we have been eating these things throughout the years. Why will it harm us now? But maybe you'll scream at me and say it is killing us slowly. Yeah maybe it did. A study in American food yielded a lot of microbial living organisms in it. Not the good ones but the bad ones. They enter the stomach and change the overall health of the individual. These elements are mostly present in fast food and other sorts of junk. Well I have eaten some pizza once and it made my stomach ache so much. It feels like something is rolling back and forth inside my stomach and it creates a back bending pain. But when I try to think about it, I think the chili powder got the good of me. Not really the pizza. But too much pizza can make you fel bloated and unhealthy. I think food is really important. As some said, you are what you eat. Food pretty much affects not only our bodies but also how the way we feel or view life. With healthier food, we can have more energy and thus, we have a lot of things we can do in our lives. I don't really do anything to measure the safety of my food except maybe to look at how it is packed. Whether it is sanitary or not. If I see an insect or any piece of dirt, I discard it automatically. When I see a trace of mold, I leave it as well. But aside from that, I don't really have a portable microscope to hunt the bad microscopic elements residing in food. I think it is the responsibility of all. But if you want to be realistic, it just resides on the consumer. The corporations must be concerned about their consumers but since a lot of business are profit-oriented, we can't really guarantee this. As for the government, it is their goal to have a department to check the foods being sold in the market. But complete inspection along with effec=ts to the health must be taken account. I think it resides in the consumer. He or she must know her own body and decide which food is good or bad for her. Information from media and medical resources pretty much tells us the good food from the bad. |
I got food poisoning from Mcdonalds.
It was horrible. I missed two whole weeks of school. :? |
Have you ever eaten something that made you really sick? er...well in new york i ate some pasta that smelled very strong (it had goat cheese in it) but it was a combination of a touch of motion sickness, stomach flu, and food that made me vomit on the plane ride home |
I read something in a magazine the other day, about dog food. They are making it so its healthy for the dog, and that humans can also eat it. I believe Ellen Degeneres is involved in this project, and she is working with a big food company.
I know this really isn't about food safety, but why wouldn't your dog want you to eat what they do? |
I'll probably die eating food one day.
I have a bad habit of rushing when I eat cause I want to go do something or I'm making my friends wait for me, so I'll shovel everything in my big fat mouth. O.< I tend to not chew enough when I rush so I end up choking. xDD I choke on my drink a lot too. -o- And one time, I chipped my tooth from eating fruit loops. :B I bit into a big sugar clump and now I have a big slit in my front tooth. :'D |
These sorts of things are an even bigger deal to me right now being pregnant. Food poisoning can be really serious while pregnant and so the doctors recommend all sorts of food restrictions. I have to wonder a lot about what I eat already and all the cravings have been so weird that it is really a wonder I haven't ended up with food poisoning lately!

I don't think it's just whether or not a product that we've been eating will harm us now - I think there's something to be said about the accumulation of harmful products in the body over many years, as well. That said, you may be right in saying that lashing out against Chinese products is a way of gaining political capital, but unfortunately, it's still true that certain products out of China have been contaminated (such as pet food with melamine). I would like to read that study you referred to about microbes in American food, because I'm studying food safety, and it may come in handy for my research. Do you have a source? @Dolce: Wow, two weeks? That must have been a pretty bad one! Which food at McDonald's did you think caused it? Was it the hamburger, maybe? @wispytearz: Congratulations on your pregnancy! :) |
My body is too strong to worry about food poisoning and stuff >.< but that feeling of wanting to empty your stomach in the middle of class from a stupid snapple isn't too much fun... I don't drink snapples anymore... but then again I'll never forget how nasty it tasted >.<
As for things that will actually harm me... well...I normally just eat fruit, veggies, and bread >.< so I'm good xD (too lazy to make REAL food) |
I wouldn't call it a scare, but I can't drink the water that is currently running through the pipes here. It makes me really sick.
It didn't used to be a problem, but sometime this winter, it got really bad. They claimed the lakes had some sort of awful algae problem, but I just don't think they're doing a good enough job cleaning it anymore (to cut costs, or whatever). I'm tired of buying bottled water all the time, but it's better than spending all the time sitting on the toilet with explosive diarrhea. T_T |
I've gotten sick a few times off of bad meat, which is one of many reasons I no longer eat meat at all. I did get sick off of spinach before though that had been sitting out too long, but that was about it.

I'm a vegetarian, not really scared of bad food quality, although I always avoided eating at burgerplaces like mcdonald and burgerking. Even when I used to be no vegetarian. Besides, I enjoy a healthy meal. It's often very tasty.
