Sadly, with the state of the economy, I'm pretty sure prices are going to keep rising. I've even heard some talk of it hitting at least somewhere in the $4 range before possibly slowing down or stopping.

Yeah. The annoying thing is that I can't get up to the place where I spend 8-10 hours a week via public transportation. The fencing club has a shuttle going to the area....in the wrong hours for me. D<

secretdae007 03-13-2008 03:38 AM

Yes, I can see how that would be bothersome... I live in the suburbs, so basically, car = life in some cases. The buses that do go through town aren't convenient for anyone outside of maybe 9-5 workers? Because those are basically the only times it runs.

It's pretty much the same here. We have an extremely limited public transportation system. There are only a couple buses and they have just a couple runs a day. It's never actually worked with my schedule to use the bus even for college. I miss living where I could walk anywhere and there was still good public transportation.

Taliah 03-13-2008 06:16 PM

Living in a very rural state, public transportation is your own vehicle. My town has no bus system, or taxi, tram or any other convienent transport. Gasoline affects everything, from travel to theprice of groceries.

Not only are people worried about gas prices (which here is around $3.14-3.20) but also milk and egg prices. Job availability is on the decrease, not helping the matter at all.

Luckily, my car gets decent gas milage, but when I am able to afford a bew car, I'm getting one of those hybrids, as this situation is quite ridiculous.

juniper_silver 03-13-2008 06:27 PM

Ugh, I take it back about gas only being $3/gallon here. Now it's $3.40ish.

Oh, man, I forgot about that. I'm hoping it doesn't affect food prices too much when companies pass on the costs of transportation to the consumers...

That said, I'm seriously considering a hybrid, too. Less money spent on gas, the better. I once drove a rental Prius from Portland to Sacramento, and it was a great ride throughout.

Mirienne 03-13-2008 10:35 PM

They don't affect me directly, cause I don't drive. I walk, bike, or take the train wherever I need to go.

But I suppose to some small extent I'm being affected, because the high gas prices make the cost of other things rise too. Food for example. My mom was complaining about how everything at the supermarket's gotten more expensive.

I suppose I'm lucky to live in the U.S. though. I know some other countries have it much worse as far as gas prices go. O:

Here, here. I recently moved to the capital city for college, and it's the first time I've ever been around a public transportation bus. I'm afraid to use them though, and there aren't very many.

Astromantic 03-14-2008 01:39 AM

I think the closest gas station has it set for $3.44 for Regular and $3.64 for Premium. My parents carpool to work to save money, but because they drive a Mercedes Benz, they have to use Premium gasoline because if you use Regular in a Benz, it will damage the motor. I drive an old Nissan Pathfinder, and I'm not going to school this semester so I don't need to fill up very often. However, when I do have to go places, I usually have to get more gas. I only allow myself to spend $20 on gasoline, and that's enough for half a tank.

Nissa 03-14-2008 02:53 AM

We have become a 1 car family. I sold mine and will not get another unless we have dire need of one. I get around now by walking. Hooray for being healthy! I'll probably get a bike with an attachment on it for the baby eventually. I just hope we stay in small towns so that I never have to worry about something being to far away.

mewmew07 03-14-2008 02:57 AM

They aren't affected me PERSONALLY, per say. THough they affect my parents and I ride with them in the car a whole lot. The gas prices here are skyrocketing. THey are like somewhere in the range of $3.50 a gallon. Luckily, our car, for a full tank, only takes like $32.00 or so. So that's not too bad. But if the prices keep going up, then it may take more and more money.

They keep taking about how we can use this and that as a substitute for gas or can be made into gas for our cars. If that is true, then why haven't htey done it already to help lower the gas prices?

Fin Raziel 03-14-2008 03:55 AM

Yeah, gas prices are horrific, but they're expected to get worse, I've heard. X_X *sigh* I don't drive far or often, but when I have to fill up, it's at least $40. I usually don't have that much cash lying around, ya know?

Easther_Bunni 03-14-2008 03:59 AM

Here in Vancouver it's around $1.20 per liter. The government just added a "carbon tax" thing that made gas prices jump up about 12 cents. :x

I wish I could buy a ZENN car, but sadly you aren;t allowed to buy one in Canada, even though they make them in Toronto. :?

Taliah 03-14-2008 04:46 PM

@ Easther_bunni - I'm curious, what's a ZENN car? And if they make them in Toronto, why can't Canadians buy a product made on their home soil?

Are the ZENN cars similar to the Hybrids has made?

frickay kitty 03-14-2008 05:00 PM

The prices here are about 113.9 cents a liter.

I can still remember back when we lived outside the city and my parents were freaking out wondering how they were going to afford paying 80 cents a liter.
Dx

Edit:

@ Taliah: http://www.zenncars.com <-- That is the website for ZENN.

Zen And Tonic 03-14-2008 05:02 PM

News that should surprise absolutely no one: Hawaiians now paying $4/gallon for gas. :(

Majinkoz 03-14-2008 05:07 PM

I agree with you. I'm a college student and it really does put a toll on my pocket. D:

I do have a job but a lot of what I make is going to gas. Before I would be able to buy a new shirt here or there and maybe go out to dinner/lunch with my boyfriend...but if gas prices keep rising (which is looks like that's the case) I'm going to have to stop everything.

I'm commute to school every day as well...so it really sucks driving 30 minutes to school and then back, every day.

frickay kitty 03-14-2008 05:07 PM

@ Zen And Tonic:
That is exceptionally unsurprising to me, as my boyfriend lives there, so this is old news. xD

They pay more for...everything.

woodzdragon 03-14-2008 06:20 PM

I don't have a car, and don't drive so the only way if affects me is that I have to listen to my parents complain

It also affects what your parents buy for you and where they take you >.>

Sukki 03-14-2008 06:33 PM

The gas prices are definitely affecting me, I am a college student, and have a two hour drive if I want to go see my family for both my birthday and easter, which are of course coming up soon. Gas is not as high here as it is in other parts of the US, fortunately I was able to purchase it at 3.08, when the other gas stations in my area range from 3.13 up to 3.19.

I usually try to take the bus most places, and generally avoid taking my car anywhere, since I live on campus and it's a long trek to my car in the first place, so I believe I do have it easier than most people.

If only the value of the dollar could have stayed stable, if the government had not flooded our economy with money not backed by anything, gas prices would probably not have risen to the point they are at currently.

.n.e.r.d.y. 03-15-2008 12:51 AM

I don't drive, but I still do get affected by the high gas prices. I'm learning to adjust though, and trying anything I can to help my sister who DOES drive out.

If you have a Wesco in your area, ask them about a Wesco rewards card. I actually just got one today, and certain items in the store will get you a few cents off the price per gallon up to 20 gallons. I got a little Icee today, and I got 2 cents of the gallon on my card. Sure, it can only add up to so much, and once you use it bye bye all you've saved. But for when the gas is unbelievably high...its gotta help you.

Think about if you get enough to add up to $1.00 of the Gallon, that would be $20 you'd save at the pump. To me, thats pretty impressive
