Exotic Food
Hi GD! My name is Bunni and I'm wondering, what's the most exotic or interesting food you've eaten?
Okay, so today my mom picks me up from work and announces she has a surprise for dessert. It turns out to be a food called halva or halawa or something. I think it was from Lebanon. It's made of sesame seed paste, basically like peanut butter, but it had pistachios in it! We tried it, and it was alright, but it had a really funny aftertaste. My dad described it as "it tastes like the smell of perfumey air freshener". If that makes sense to you, great. It was good, but really different. My mom really liked it, I thought it was okay, and my dad hated it! That's the strangest food I've ever had. What's yours? |
My dad made me eat fried fruit bats to "cure" my asthma ( a traditional recipe, apparently). They were, uh. Crispy.
|
Fried fruit bats? :? That definitely qualifies as an exotic food.
How would that cure asthma though, just wondering? |
Most exotic food that i have ever tried is rocky mounten osters..(Bull balls)
Dident know what it was tell AFTER i eat it..>< but fried fruit bats? That sounds like something of of the jakie-chan cartoon..>< |

I can't really compete w/ fried fruit bats but the most exotic food I've ever eaten is rambutans. They're this fruit that has a sort of spikey outer covering that you cut open and the fruit sort of tastes like grapes. They're really tasty but unfortunately they're expensive where I live so I don't get to eat as many as I'd like. :(
|
Bull bollocks and fried fruit bats sound like they should be on that Fear Factor show. :S
I'm a very picky eater, and I hardly try anything strange food wise. But I did try some kind of Japanese soup at a Hibachi bar that tasted terrible. It was clear, had mushrooms floating in it, as well as some green spice maybe. Not sure what the dish was called. |
Ate fried cicada bug. It tasted kinda like popcorn o.O
Doesn't compete with fried fruit bats though xD |
I've cooked sheep's brains and sheep testicles, from an Eastern recipe book I have.
They tasted okay, because they just tasted like the spices they were cooked in. But the texture wasn't nice, and the brains looked gross, because they still looked like brains. Oh, well, at least I can say I've done it! |
Mine probably was green curry with rose petals.
It's a Thailand's kind of curry, it looks white and really spicy! |
I'm kind of lame. The most exotic thing I've ever had is squid.
|
omg @ fried fruit bats. DD:
I've had rambutans before, Harmonia! My mom's friend had a rambutan tree and gave us the fruit sometimes. Hmm... when I went to Okinawa, I had a sample of some kind of liquor that was made from snake venom. The jars and bottles of it that they were selling had whole snakes in them. 0___0 It tasted really good though, like cinnamon. |
OMG Caroline. I'm so jealous. Rambutans are quite possibly my favorite fruit of all time.
|
I've never really eaten any exotic or interesting foods, having grown up in a Canadian prairie province.

I should mention, actually, that I'm originally from Malaysia, specifically, the Malaysian part of Borneo - hence the fruit bats. XD And yes, I ate rambutans all the time as a kid, as well as other tropical fruit like durians, mangos, litchis and jackfruit. ("Rambut" means "hair" in Malay.) |
@ Taliah- Sounds like miso soup. Just clear broth with things added to it.
@Zen And Tonic- Oof, Durians. I could never get past the smell! Most exotic thing I've eaten? Squid, and tiny octopi. They were so cute though, I almost didn't want to eat them! Since I live in the western part of New York, I don't get much adventurous eating done. I wish I could. There are many unsual food that I'd love to try. Birds nest soup in particular, looks very tasty. |
Hm..I really can't think of any really exotic food I've ever had. I think the closest would be veal..which I regret now that I know it's baby cow. D': Luckily I only had like one bite. Though my mother on the other hand has had a lot of crazy stuff. Like iguana, turtle eggs, pigs and chicken feet, and cow tongue. She swears they are delicious. Ugh. X_X

Durians are beloved in Malaysia - considered by some to be the "King of Fruit", in fact. You're right about the smell, though - there's actually a fine for taking a durian onto public transportation in Singapore! I used to really like durian, but I'm not a huge fan any more. That's not to say I hate it, it's just that I'm no longer very enthused about eating it. Bird's nest soup actually doesn't taste much like anything. XD The texture is what you're going to remember from it - it's really slippery and a little chewy. |
The most exotic thing I have eaten was a kind of sushi. I don't remember what it is called, but it was large and oval in shape, with large salmon eggs on it.
|
I'm not very adventurous when it comes to food. Mom brings home all kinds of strange stuff, but I rarely try it.
Guess the most exotic stuff I've had was Baklava. I thought it was way too sweet. |
I've tried goat milk which was creamer and alittle bit sour tasting than regular milk.
I've had ostrich burger, which didn't taste that different from regular burger. And one day I'm going to try a turducken, rattlesnake, and kangaroo. (I know of a weird butcher that sells weird meats.) |
The oddest food I've ever eaten is octopus (Tako in Japanese) it was at this traditional Japanese steak house. It was like breaded shrimp. But it was so weird eating octopus. But it's YUMMY! <3

conch salad
this is a bahamain dish. it is made of raw conch (from the beautiful bahamian waters), mixed with tomato, chopped onion, a little sour orange juice, red pepper (this dish does not taste good without it.) and i guess there are other stuff in it, but these are the basic ingredients) tip: donot try it if you don't like molluscs |
My mother made me try shark one time. I hate fish - it's so nasty- and she wouldn't tell me what it was until I took a big bite. So I did and it tasted nasty and she was like "it's shark" and I was like "OMG ew."
She also used to make me eat flounder with chedder and brocolli when I was younger - and she made me sit there until I was done eating it....even 4 hours after everyone else had left the dinner table. D: There is a food I eat though and everyone I know thinks it is the most disgusting thing ever. I make macaroni, brown some butter and put it on the macaroni, put cottage cheese on it and some soy sauce and I eat that. Everyone thinks it's disgusting. (My friend who is from Brazil eats chicken hearts on a regular basis because that is traditional brazilian food and she thinks I'M disgusting. No offense to her or anyone else who enjoys it - but I was at her house when they made it once and I couldn't stand to look at it without feeling horrible.) lol |
I don't know if they could be called strange, and I have not eaten many foods that could be considered exotic, but I have had saffron rock candy before. It was strange...the saffron was really hard to taste, there were just bits and pieces of it in the candy itself. It was pretty good though, just rock candy with a slightly different flavor.
One of my new favorite foods is the Vietnamese noodle soup called Pho. My boyfriend introduced me to it, and I love that stuff. =3 My favorite is Pho Tai Chin (the noodles with beef and brisket). I tasted the Pho Ga (noodles with chicken), but the broth of that one did not taste very good to me at all, though my mother, who ordered it, liked it better than pho tai chin. I guess it's just a matter of taste. |
