Since I read about that, I've been looking at some pictures of the "dark" Alice.
The Disney version is always the image that comes to mind...darn it. xD

I definitely like the dark ones better.
Those things appeal to me. I like scary movies and gore, whatnot. [:

By the way, Lewis Carol [sp?] is a great author. ^-^
In drama class, we're looking at his stuff.

I don't like the way people decide that Lewis Carol must have been on drugs to write Alice in Wonderland. While it may have been the case, as Opium dens were pretty popular back them, I like to think ones imagination can stretch further than the boundaries of reality without the use of drugs. People shouldn't write it off for being weird or abnormal. D=

Woahh o_o
Creepy!
I was just discussing that with my family.
They were talking about how he MUST've been on drugs.
And I said it's possible but he could've easily done that with nothing.
Hoorah, someone agrees. :3
I love the way he created his own words. Jabberwocky ftw. 8D

I feel an Alice in Wonderland quote fest coming on! D=

*Runs off to find the books.*

I've had many a discussion/near brawl over the matter. xD I, myself, am a very creative type and enjoy the things I imagine. So for someone to say that about an author as great as Carol is sort of an insult to me as well. xD

Well if I recall correctly he had some sort of injury that left him with something that would pain him on occasion. At that time people used laudanum which is a dirivative of opium. But I don't recall ever reading that he took drugs habitually as a user. So I think that might be where that rumor started.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And, hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
Perhaps that is the reason for the rumour, but I think that people just assume someone who wrote something so peculiar must have aid from some form of hallucinogen. D=

Yeah Beff that is pretty weird, but I don't think all weirdness has to be drug induced!

I have come across a lot of 'nasty' Red Riding Hood stories, like with her being a mob boss etc. There is also her portrayal in a certain graphic novel I have read (I wish I could remember the name though - something to do with Fabletown) which portrays her as being possessed. By Baba Yaga, but still possessed!

I totally agree. If it's the one I think you mean, I read it, and was somewhat disturbed!

Blondheart 04-01-2008 11:00 AM

Wow I muse have missed all those! Maybe I am glad I did.

kimu 04-01-2008 11:24 AM

Well, it is just different versions of a character. I'm sure there is an evil snow white version SOMEWHERE out there.
[ I think fairytales are very fun to mess with, something so innocent in reality can seem very scary to others, for something that people don't know, can be very scary!~ ]

I personally like the version of Alice with black hair and more lolita-ish blue clothings [ Hmm, although there really isn't a version for that...maybe I should write it! :'D Lol ]

I've read plenty of stories about other fairy tale characters that involved them being sort of dark characters--there was Alice, but there was also Rose Red...I think that the same people that made American McGee's Alice in Wonderland (that was the 'scary' video game) were going to make a new video game based off of Little Red Riding Hood. I rather like the dark version just because they generally have more...meaning to them? In fairy tales, everything is perfect or gets perfect...it dark fairy tales, there's a problem that is sometimes solved and sometimes isn't.

The thing is fairy tales are not really for kids at the start. They are simply fictional stories of magic. Ever heard of Grimm's fairy tales? It is composed of different dark fairy tales.

Alice in wonderland is part of it. That is why Alice is a dark character. There are other dark stories like the little mermaid and snow white. It is only because Disney made such a good job in transforming the characters and stories of these fairy tales to be chold friendly that fairy tales are now considered to be for kids.

Grimm's fairy tales are usually composed of stories of despair with a lot of deaths and murders. You could try getting a copy to read the true versions of the fairy tales. (like how the little mermaid died through suicide) So don't say they are fractured. In fact, Disney is the one who fractured what fairy tales are really supposed to be.

memarcus 04-06-2008 08:17 AM

Well, the original fairy tales aren't exactly cute and pristine either, and are definitely different than the Disney versions. For instance, I remember reading the original Cinderella in which the stepsisters cut off their heels and toes in order to fit into the slipper that was left behind, and it is the blood in their shoes that gives away that the slipper doesn't fit.

And there are darker versions of the fairy tales you mentioned as well: the film Snow White: A Tale of Terror portrays the seven dwarfs as lustful grown men, who all also die in terrifying and horrific ways because of the wicked queen. Another version of a modern Little Red Riding Hood, entitled Freeway, portrays the wolf as a pedophile who goes to extreme lengths to attack a victim that had previously injured him. So, Alice in Wonderland isn't the only fairy tale that is portrayed as dark or gruesome.

I have an original copy of Grimms from a small book making company that was the first in the US to publish it.

Most fairy tales were morality tales for adults and children alike.

Do you like the normal Alice, or the dark disturbing version better? I like both versions.. I think kids should be told the normal Alice one but every one loves a little scare as well.

Why is Alice the only one turned into something darker and scarier than her original intent? I have seen a few grim tales with the others but I do not think they where that old. But I have heard there are older ones out there.

Why is Alice so appealing in the first place? (I have to admit I have always been pretty fond of her myself.) I think she just has that sweet girl look but also has a dark side. It is going to be someone you would not expect. But then again the other tales show her a bit more disturbed.

If you were going to turn fairytale characters dark, which ones would they be and why? (I would choose Snow White and Rose Red, those girls just lend themselves to being dark and creepy by virtue of their very names.)I would choose the Ariel lol why not she seems she like she could take things out on her fishy friends.
