Increasing Food Cost

Have you noticed food prices going up for you recently? I have - I know that yogurt is slightly more expensive now, for example, as is soy milk (because of the surge in the commodity price of soy). I don't buy bovine milk, but I've heard that it's going up, too, which would explain the increasing price of yogurt.

So, have increasing food prices affected you as well?

Majinkoz 04-13-2008 03:41 PM

Yep! Food prices are definitely going up. Especially things like milk. We were talking about it in our economics class...

Lenne Potter 04-13-2008 03:44 PM

It has something to do do to oil Transport strikes and the huge inflation of oil and gasoline in the middle east.

Food is definitely going to spike too.

Plus, Not only that, but the dollar is losing is gold back up.

Intoxicate 04-13-2008 03:45 PM

I know the prices have increased but they really haven't impacted me much in the area.
I'm no economics expert, but I would guess that the inflation of the cost of milk may be due to some regulations tightened by the FDA or possibly a purging of some impurities(like bacteria or something) that were found in some milk. xD;;

Crappy Lia 04-13-2008 03:51 PM

perhaps its [if you live in america] american dollar?
i mean, a bank corrupted there recently, didnt it?
o__o (i dont know much but i just know that)
and then the dollar was less worth was it?
i mean, comparing it with the filipino peso, its 40 pesos
first it was 50 pesos O:
the euro-peso comparison is still the same
so yeah idk
o__o maybe its the american dollar?

Hmm. I don't think that's the reason why - pasteurization to lower bacterial counts in milk has been going on for decades, and shouldn't just all of a sudden affect milk prices.

More likely, as has been mentioned, transportation costs and fuel prices have something to do with it.

I know that bread prices have been going up because there's a world-wide shortage of wheat. Also I've noticed that the prices for everything in Canada have been going up because the minimum wage just went up on March 31st.

Food Increasement

I don't do the shopping in my house, but I've noticed that milk and bread are more expensive now. The other items are pretty much the same though.

Urboros 04-13-2008 04:49 PM

Eh the US dollar hasn't been backed by gold for a while now...We are going into a recession >.>

Maria-Minamino 04-13-2008 05:23 PM

Everything is going up - gas prices, housing prices, food prices. It all ties in together.

I don't drive and I live in a dorm right now - but I know it's very expensive to keep the house my parents live in so they are trying to sell it. but the housing market is so dead nothing is selling.

But I DO buy my own food - and it kills me D:

Living Dead 04-13-2008 05:38 PM

Yes they have gone up so crazy. I have heard that they will be going up again to help cover the price to get them to the stores where gas is going up so high... Pretty soon it would be better if we raised our own gardens.

FlyPanda 04-13-2008 05:57 PM

I have noticed that the food prices are going up >.>; i feel sorry for those very poor people...i mean my family's not that poor, we're more middle-class-ish but we are very concerned about all the prices going up and the gas going up O.O; it is absolutely not good for the U.S. economy

Living Dead 04-13-2008 06:01 PM

I remember being able to take a dollar to the store when I was little and I would come back with a pop, chips or a candy bar, and a whole bag of other candy.. Those little sour worms where like 3 cents each. I wish I could go back to those days lol.

Allura Minelle 04-13-2008 11:39 PM

Actually, I have noticed this... But I don't really buy food anywhere else other than school.

2 years ago, lunch was $1.75. This year, lunch is 3.50 while not including a drink.

Crazy inflation. Everything in the vending machines are now $1.75. Things used to be $.50 or $.75.

Lollirot 04-13-2008 11:45 PM

Well I live in a big city, Miami. Our prices are far above most other places, while still not being the highest. I went to New York and found many items were 10cents to 20cents higher. . .

Everything here is rising in cost. And min wage pay is not. . .

My house was 140k when we got it, when I was 5. I turn 20 this year. . . the house is worth 450k. . .

Amo_Angelus 04-13-2008 11:57 PM

I can honestly say that I haven't noticed. Maybe food prices aren't going up in England? It's really weird, considering how frugal I am when grocery shopping.

Rainy 04-14-2008 12:10 AM

Food Prices

I've also realized that rice has gone up like eight dollars or so =/

Arkeyla 04-14-2008 12:18 AM

We had some sort of freak weather affecting the banana crop, so for a while bananas were ridiculously expensive... lucky I don't really like bananas that much! Yeah, other food prices seem to be going up as well, but there's also a few 'cheap' brands around, so I just buy those instead, and a lot of them aren't half bad!

Purdy Possum Pie 04-14-2008 12:51 AM

It goes up like crazy I wish I had enough land to have a little crop. I live next to the hill side and do not get much sun here... Plus it is a place that floods so very easy every year. So every time I try either nothing grows do to no sun or it will be all washed away.

They put so many chemicals in food to get it to be faster and better that it is hard telling what we are eating anyways.

Skrae 04-14-2008 01:35 AM

Everything is going up in price here. It's kind of hard, really. Only one parent in my family works, and his job depends on the weather being good, so money's tight. Food, gas, really, everything's price is increasing slowly, and not so slowly. It's due to gas, the recession, and greedy people being very influential.

I'm not sure, my mom buys my food.

But she always complains that my healthy crap is too much extra money when she needs real food too.

Because in her mind, Chips > Apples.

Amo_Angelus 04-14-2008 01:42 AM

Well healthy food is a lot more expensive than junk. Welcome to the read world. Apples cost more than chips, organic costs more than processed. Free range costs more than battery. Because it costs more to produce.

But if she doesn't want to buy both, she should just buy healthy food. Not crap.

Amo_Angelus 04-14-2008 01:57 AM

Ummmmm have you got any idea how the real world works? Crap is cheaper than healthy. What would you like your mom to sacrifice to meet your selfish demands of all healthy food? Because it would certainly be less times because no pre-processed food, you'd have a lot less money because healthy stuff is at least twice as expensive as non healthy. All healthy is not the way to go my dear naive little one, as you will learn the moment you start running your own household. Healthy is good, yes, if you can afford the money and time for it. But you also have to learn the value of compromise. You have to mix healthy with unhealthy. You have to meet on the middle and until you start shopping for yourself don't criticize your mom for making the most of her money. Unless you move out and learn how to manage it better.

S A R S 04-14-2008 02:06 AM

Why, yes it is. All thinks to our irresponsible government.

Meat is going way way up too because we're turning all our corn into fuel, when we should be using it to feed our animals and people.

There are so many better alternatives to corn, like sugar and this type of weed whose name I forgot..
