Well, I taught myself to type over the last several years. I've been able to type without looking at the keyboard or the computer screen for at least a year and a half now, though it was something I learned slowly.

How did I develop this skill? My devotion to watching television (mainly Law & Order) and my devotion to roleplaying. They conflicted, so I learned how to type my roleplay replies without having to look away from the television screen. I only looked to make sure I had spelled everything right and to hit the submit button.

Even when I was just beginning to type, I used at least three fingers. "One finger typing," is actually called "chicken pecking." My boyfriend types like this, though he has a decent excuse. His fingers are rather large and he's a bit clumsy, therefore making it hard to hit a single key unless actually watching as he types.

Me? I have nice, long, thin fingers. Perfect for typing quickly.

Chicken pecker typists are kind of annoying, especially when you're waiting on them to finish up whatever they're doing. In school, it takes them too long to get anything done, and it holds back everyone in the class, not just themselves.

Even if they still have to look at the keyboard, they should at least put forth effort to learn how to type better and faster. It'll make their lives a lot easier once they learn it.

Yeahh, touch-typing!
It gets on my nerves though, because lately if I am spelling a word, I picture the keys in my head. xDD
I've been touch-typing for a long time.
My mom does one-finger typing, and I get really frustrated while watching her because it's soo slow and inconvient.
-turns to watch TV while typing-

My science teacher goes online a lot when we take tests and stuff, and he types like amazingly fast.

So we made him look away and still typed amazingly fast (and accurately-we had 3 people watch the computer screen).

It was creepy.

I'm a touch typer and loving it. I prefer touch typing; I don't understand why anyone would love typing with one finger. I've been touch typing since I was about 7/8 so that's ... 7-8 years ago.
I was pretty much the first person in my primary school that could touch type. It got me the computing award lmao. I feel sorry for people who can't touch type/type fast since they'll sit there for ages typing something out. Touch typing is just so much more convenient and, well, it looks better ;).
There are actually people in my grade that don't know how to touch type. Note that I'm in year ten and it's pretty sad.

I have been doing it ... I dunno for a little over a year but sometimes I do prefer to actually look down at the key board, I think it helps me think.

Thats Basicly what i do

Kukon 05-11-2008 03:35 AM

I look away from the screen and use only my pointer fingers except on rare occasions, but i'm still very fast for single finger typing.

Cheya 05-11-2008 04:57 AM

I am somewhere in between touch-typing and finger-pecking, but I am not going for a job in typing and I really like a slow pace of typing. It is easier on my hands as I have arthritis.

I like how you guys are looking down on others by the way... admirable trait.

I'm getting much better at touch typing : D

But until the beginning of last year or so,
I still had to look at the keyboard >.<

haha.
I think I learned how to type on AIM~

Typing

So how do you all type? Do you type fast without looking or slow and have a hard time finding the keys?

I type semi-fast. I sometimes have to look but I'm getting better.

Kaelin Devereux 06-15-2008 03:56 AM

i dont always look unless i'm really tired and cant find exactly what i'm looking for lol i'm definately a fast typer.

i find myself alot watching TV and typing at the same time. Lol multi-talented i guess :sweat:

well i'm off to check other threads!

I type very fast. Only times I look are when I'm entering passwords or trying to type something that needs to be accurate, or when I'm sick, tired or a bit tipsy. Other than that I really don't need to look at my fingers as I'm typing.

Kita 06-15-2008 05:12 AM

Well, I type at a pretty good speed I think, and don't need to look at the keyboard but do, mostly whenever I think about it.... like now. :O But I also type with one hand if Im drawing at the computer.

Amu 06-15-2008 05:31 AM

I don't type very fast but I'm trying to not look down on the keyboard as much. I can't really multi task like type and watch something at the same time. I don't use the paticular way your supposed to place your fingers on the keyboard. I just remember where the paticular keys are and type.

The Lady Who Knew 06-15-2008 06:17 AM

I haven't looked since I learned when I was 9. I taught myself, and when I had to take keyboarding in grade 10 I typed faster than the teacher, but I couldn't type at all the way that the program told me to type, so I did it my own way. Yay for 112 wpm!!

sky fairy starling 06-15-2008 06:39 AM

I type simi fast

Okiama 06-15-2008 03:34 PM

I never look at the keys at home. I'm just so used to them. Then again, I took 3 years of Computer Processing. In 7th I thought it would count so I wouldn't have to do it in 9th well it didn't. We had to for 6 weeks in 8th and I had to take it this year or I would have to next year. At least I can type!:insane:

The-Shadow-Girl 06-15-2008 03:36 PM

I'm a two handed touch typer at 20.5 words a minute.

Sugar Floss Decay 06-16-2008 03:00 AM

70 words per minute, bby.

Rokryru 06-16-2008 05:39 AM

I seem to switch from both, if I get going I can type without looking at the keyboard, but there are plenty of times when I have to chicken-peck the keyboard to write down a sentence. Starting to learn the keys just by being on the internet since I never took the class, but I am by no means a fast typer

zigbigadorlube 06-17-2008 03:03 AM

I couldn't imagine not touch typing... I've done it since like... 10th grade I think? Even before that I learned it in sixth grade but then sort of lost the skill between then and 10th when I took another typing class...

It's so much easier to be able to watch what you're typing to make sure you don't have any typeos and crap... Also, it makes it a lot easier to multitask... My computer is in the living room where the TV is so a lot of the time I can be watching TV and typing at the same time. ^^;

Random side note... I have a typing speed of about 85 words per minute. ^^;

[L]ove[H]ate 06-17-2008 03:28 AM

I'm really good at it. I haven't looked at the keyboard since I took keyboarding class my freshman year. That was like two years ago in the fall.

nike13 06-17-2008 06:08 AM

I never knew it was called touch typing, I just knew it freaked my dad out whenever I would be typing things up on the computer while having a face to face conversation with him or when I would be reading from a book and typing the definitions without bothering to look at the screen ^^ I've been able to do this since about Junior year high school, which translates to about 7 years now.

I've always had to use the computer a lot growing up, my grandfather wanted me to get over my 'omg I just broke it' problems and be able to use them ^^ I still break the computers, but at least now I'm not afraid to and am able to debug problems a lot better now.

It really does help in my field (computer science). I can program and debug faster than others who need to watch the screen to see that they're typing things correctly, it definitely helps me multitask more and it really didn't take too much serious typing before I picked it up.

I was taking two courses, one was Honors History and the other AP Economics and both required me to type up lots of reports and definitions so as time went by, my speed, accuracy and later this touch typing stuff just happened. I didn't actually notice I was doing it until my parents came over one day to ask a question and noticed me with my nose in a textbook and my fingers typing away ^^; They always wanted me to drill it into my brother but really it's just something you pick up.

I know a lot of good and fast typers being in CS, but not many that touch type which was weird to me. I figured if I would find a lot of people able to do this, it would be in computer science department but oh well.

I'm a rare breed. I can touch type with only using a few fingers. It's how I learned to type, and probably always will type. XD
I used to be a 'chicken scratcher' as one of my teachers put it, for years.
Until it was required for me to take typing class, that is. XD
He always hated when I 'chicken scratched', and helped me learn to Touch Type.

I'm still a pretty fast typer, even though I touch type, and only use a few fingers.
It's completely possible for me to type like that, and look away from the computer. ^^; Most of my friends are amazed that I can do that.
When they ask me how, I just respond with something like...
Well, you see...I'm dyslexic. And I just sort of remembered where all the keys are. 'But how?' By the position of my arms, and hands. It's kinda hard to explain, but...yeah.

I've been touch typing since probably...10th grade? Which would be since...2003? Yeah, that sounds about right. ^^;

I'm pretty happy that I learned too. In case I ever need to apply for a job that requires typing, I'll probably get it. ^^;
