Touch typing

Yes thouch typing. The typing where you know where all the keys are and don't have to look at your keybored to find the letters and if you're really good you can look away from the computer screen while typing.

I've just been having a conversation with my friend about touch typing about how it can give you a better chance of getting a job with typing involved because it looks better and about alot of people in our year still can't touch type and do one fingered typing.

I've been touch typing for three or four years now and my friend for about two years. We both find that one fingered typing is slow and time consuming.

So discuss:

Are you a touch typer or a one fingered typer.

Which one do you prefer touch typing or one fingered typing.

If you're a touch typer how long have you been touch typing.

If you're a one fingered typer would you learn how to touch type.

Do you know alot of people who can't touch type.

I can touch type and I can also look away from the screen while typing. A lot of my friends find it unnerving though when I just start watching them or looking at something else while I am typing away.
I have been doing it ... I dunno for a little over a year but sometimes I do prefer to actually look down at the key board, I think it helps me think.

I'm a touch typer. I prefer touch typing, it's so much easier. I've been touch typing for a year or more? Basically when I started playing video games.
I only know one or two people that can't type quickly :) everyone else I know can.

Otohime 04-16-2008 10:51 PM

I don't put my fingers on home room, I usually look at the keyboard and I don't peck... So I guess I'm doing ok. XD

Iced-anime 04-16-2008 11:03 PM

I've been touch typing since 8th grade, which was a little over 4 years ago. I'm really good at it too. I've been practicing it since I had first learned and all the while I've been getting faster and faster :p

Cows Go Moo 04-16-2008 11:04 PM

Well, I don't touch type completely, but I don't exactly peck either. It's more like I have to look at the keyboard for a bit and then I'm able to sort of touch type. I still have to keep one eye on the comp, but I can also do a few other things at the same time. I do a few people that peck a lot. I've sort have been doing this for a few years I think, whenever I used that typing program XD.

I learned to touch type about 15 or so years ago when I took a keyboarding class. We had to learn to have our fingers over the home row keys and touch type because we were tested on speed and accuracy. And because the teacher would have taken points off if we didn't. Before that class though I was a few finger typer, I guess. I used two or three fingers so I could hit keys that are close together faster and more conveniently, I didn't use just one finger and poke at the keyboard.

I'm somewhere in between a touch-typer and a finger-pecker. = w= I use 2 or 3 fingers on each hand.

I look at the keyboard but I do know its layout quite well and could type some things without looking - words I type very often or passwords, that kind of thing. I think I'm pretty quick - not as fast as a good touch-typer but faster than my friends generally are - a sign that I spend too much time on the internet? X3

I typed that last sentence without looking, and made 3 mistakes by hitting the key next to the one I was aiming for. = w= Not bad, I think.

I had to try to learn to touch type when I was 11 in my computer class, but I found it very difficult and I wasn't very used to using a computer then, so I couldn't. Now, I could maybe learn but I do fine with my method. ^ w^

Ah, that's what it's called? I touch type and I can do it pretty quickly. We had computer classes in elementary school, but I didn't really start touch typing until I got to middle school and had to type up papers. Soo much more convenient to type essays from a rough draft on paper when you can read it and type without looking away from the paper you have in front of you. Plus, I can respond to people faster online too. :P

Peaches 04-16-2008 11:10 PM

I'm a touch typer sometimes lolz but yeah....I just type fast too so yeah...hehe

secretdae007 04-16-2008 11:19 PM

My school pretty much prepared us to touch type O.o; We had a lot of typing games in school starting about when I was in second grade. Plus being in fast forums on Gaia, I have a lot of practice... And it is helpful when you have to type notes or something you've already written. Usually when I am typing notes for classes, I don't look at anything outside of the book.

But honestly, I don't know if it would put you over anyone else for a job or something. They may inquire about how fast you can type but I really don't think that it will affect you greatly. Speed is more important than if you can type without having to look up, I think.

tentenpuff 04-16-2008 11:21 PM

Ooh, I'm a touch typer! xD; I never knew that that was what a touch typer was, but hah, now I know. >D -feels smart-

I've been typing for a really long time... Like since elementary school, I've been a fast typer. When I was 12, I had an average of like 95 WPM? In Tech I had 105 as my record, 89 as lowest, soo... P:

My dad's introduced me to computers since like, before I've started school. XD

I can type easily without looking at the keyboard, heck, the screen. :'3
Of course, there's a few typos, but you know. =P

Saisei 04-16-2008 11:42 PM

I'm ancient compared to most of you, so most of my schoolwork was done with good old pen and paper. Keyboarding was never really a necessity until I started chatting online all the time. I took a couple keyboarding classes in high school, but I still habitually looked at the keys and never broke 50WPM until I started long late night chats with the girl who would become my wife and then I learned through repetition how to look at the screen instead of the keys.

Lore 04-16-2008 11:48 PM

Is that what typing without having to look at the keyboard is called? I didn't know it had a specific name or anything, but I'm perfectly capable of doing that and looking away from the screen to type. I'm generally typo free, too!

When I need to, I can usually talk to someone and still type out whatever I'm thinking as well. Sometimes the thoughts bleed together, but it's generally not too bad.

omgitsme 04-16-2008 11:55 PM

I can touch type and it is way less time consuming then the other form of typing and i prefer it because it just comes naturally to me,most people i know still look and find the letters and then type the words out slowly sometimes it kind of annoys me but i understand that not everyone is a good typer. And i dont know about it helping you get a job that requires typing but it probably does

FlyPanda 04-17-2008 12:15 AM

i'm good at touch typing since i've been typing stories on the computer since around second grade. and then when i actually started touch-typing is around fourth or fifth grade >.>; the only advantage is that you can type while seeing if your typing the correct thing >.>; not much of a talent though o.o; but it can be helpful for nanowrimo, lol

Allura Minelle 04-17-2008 12:21 AM

I'm a touch typer. I do have to look down once at the beginning to see if my placement is correct with my fingers. But after I know I'm in the right position, I type quickly without problems.

Actually, right now I'm watching Sweeney Todd as I write this.

I prefer touch typing. Finger typing is too slow. I do it though when my other arm is occupied.

I don't know, but I've been interneting since 11 so I've had tons of practice. And especially since school assigns so much typed papers, there's no way you can't end up typing like this! I think at least...

Din 04-17-2008 12:24 AM

I can touch type. And look away if I wish.
I've done it on and off for about three years.

My hunt and peck typing is actually just as fast.
I can hammer faster that way. Touch makes me nervous sometimes.
Like being wary of missing a key on one of those tests.
I never learned how to do the numbers at the top of the board though.
I can do the two, and the eight well, but not the others.
And I haven't memorized the shift positions of the numbers. xD

Peaches 04-17-2008 12:25 AM

OK i am trying to touch type right now.....cool

Arkeyla 04-17-2008 01:01 AM

I'm a touch typer myself, and prefer it that way, though I must admit I do look away from the screen and at the keyboard sometimes, like when I see on the screen that I have made an error and want to know how it happened! I have been typin this way for over a decade now, ever since I had to learn for my first job as an office assistant.

Furious 04-17-2008 01:07 AM

I...Am very odd when it comes to typing.

See, I type with 3 fingers. Just 3. Well, unless you count using my thumb to press the space bar.
I never learned to type with all my fingers, I taught myself how to type faster, and that's what came of it.

I am actually typing this without looking at the keyboard, and can look away and still type pretty well. The only time I ever really have to look at the keyboard is when I get confused and realize my fingers are off a few keys. Other than that, I hardly ever have to look at the keyboard.

And you would think I would type slow using only three fingers, but I actually type about as fast as my mom, who types using all her fingers like a normal person. XD

x CoCo x 04-17-2008 01:08 AM

I am quite a touchtyper but sometimes i have have a peek at the keyborad for a while then i seem to rememenber it somehow. I suck looking away from the screen...

MacSen191 04-17-2008 01:38 AM

I am a little of both. I look once in a great while, but that's because I kind of space out on the keyboard as I am thinking. I mainly do this when I am writing stories. Uh, also I have a tendancy to look a lot more at the keyboard when I am aware that I am trying to touch type. When I don't pay attention to my typing I do great, but when I pay attention and am aware I suck because I am afraid I will make mistakes... etc. LOL.

Valkyrie_Valentine 04-17-2008 02:12 AM

I actually use touch-typing.
I think it's because I'm talking on these websites and MSN a lot.
It's sort of just become a habit.
-shrugs-

Vickicat 04-17-2008 05:43 AM

Typing.

I can type without looking at the keyboard. And I can type without looking at the screen and only make minimal mistakes. It drives me crazy when I see people typing with one finger because it's so slow, I just wanna type the stuff for them myself. XD It's a good thing I don't have to look at the keyboard, becuase over the years, quite a few of the letters on my keyboard have rubbed off so I have a lot of blank keys on my keyboard, and a lot of keys with only half a letter on them. It drives other people crazy when they try to use my computer if they are people who have to look at what they are typing. I think it's funny. XD I could care less if there are letters on the keys or not, because I know where they all are. I admit, it does bother me a little bit because it makes my computer look crappy, and I like having things look all nice and new, but my computer has long left those days behind. But yeah, I could have a totally blank keyboard without any letters labeled on the keys at all and have no problem typing on it.
