You know what really grinds my gears?

I hate it when people are all against racial discrimination and sexism, but then they are extremely homophobic. I hate it. It annoys me so much! Or when people who claim they are not homophobic use the term 'gay' in hurtful ways. Like "That's so gay...". I don't see why people think being gay is so bad... They use it as in insult! Why? Ugghhh.... We're now seeing O'bama and Clinton running for president here in the U.S. Could you ever imagine an openly gay president? I can't see it happening anytime soon.

There are probably more topics like this, but I just wanted to rant. Leave feedback if you feel the need.

Enzeru 04-17-2008 02:19 AM

I think we're going to walk into the next civil rights movement really soon. Then maybe gays will have more rights and people will stop using gay as an insult.

My stance: full human equality in all social aspects.

Nissa 04-17-2008 02:29 AM

People can't keep their noses out of other people's business. That's just the way things are now. I'm a member of a mom's group and I've said time and time again that we should be able to rally together against the things we all know are bad (drugs, pedophiles, etc) and leave personal things alone. But everyone cares more about who is circumcising and getting shots then they do about Chester hanging out in front of schools. I don't know why people are that way, but they are and don't seem to feel the need to change.

But never give up! There are a lot of us who write to our state reps and congressmen letting them know that everyone deserves the same rights in their relationships as those of us who are strait enjoy. Eventually the masses will turn!

*sorry, I get carried away sometimes*

That made me think of this video right away.
(And it's satirical video, so it's not meant to offend anyone)

But that's one of my biggest pet peeves in life. "That's so gay."
Arg! I wanna slap the person every time the say it. Even at my college which is one of the most prestigious universities in the state, I still hear it. Even from my own roommate! I broke her of that habit real soon. Trust me.

It's just beyond me how someone can be judged based on who they love. In a world this messed up, why are we trying to stop love? We need all the love we can get.

Enzeru 04-17-2008 02:36 AM

I think that if people want to say something is not to their liking they should use lame instead of gay. I know it's kinda late 80s but it's more politically correct (lol, oxymoron).

Taliah 04-17-2008 02:49 AM

"That's so gay" is a pet peeve of mine as well, don't worry.

The gay movement is admirable. They know that this is who they are, and will fight with everything they have to claim the rights that are, rightfully, theirs.

I personally commend them. I have friends who are gay. I know their thoughts, their feelings, as the people they are. Human. Not some freak of nature. People like you and me. Yet we tell them that they can't love someone, simply because they happen to be the same gender.

I've seen heterosexual marriages tear each other apart in hate and rage, and homosexuals be such kind and loving families. Of course there is a vice versa, like always. But just because of the ones who don't make it, we condemn the rest before they can even try?
hardly fair.

critternator 04-17-2008 02:49 AM

@Enzeru:: I too believe in full equal human equality. It annoys me when people say they are too, but discriminate against gays. >=[ Grrr... it makes me angry thinking about it...
Yeah I know, but still, it;s as if they think the term 'gay' is bad enough to be an insult... And it being used in the first place is ridiculous...

@Nissa:: Thanks for the support! Not sure what that first part was about, Lol... But Thanks!

@Uzura:: Haha that was funny... Of course I'm gay and Catholic =]... Me too! I feel like just screaming at people when they say that! I know... Very true!

Too true.

Didn't "lame" originally mean "handicapped"? If you are going to take "that's so gay" as a homophobic comment, it would only be politically correct and consistent to interpret "that's so lame" as an insulting comment towards handicapped people.

I'm pretty much the biggest gay-friendly fag hag ever -- lived in San Francisco for a while and sort of have plans to move in with a gay couple, eventually -- and I as well as my gay friends call things "gay" as in "stupid." It's not homophobic unless YOU are homophobic and using it in a hateful manner. I honestly have not met a gay person who considered that term offensive.

Anyways, there is already a thread on that...

I do find it hypocritical for people to be against racism and sexism but be perfectly okay with discrimination based on sexual orientation. Makes no sense; it's just the same as any other form of discrimination that is looked down upon.

Enzeru 04-17-2008 03:34 AM

Yeah, but we don't call handicap people lame anymore because it's considered a rude insult. So therefore the meaning of the word has changed.

Claudia 04-17-2008 03:46 AM

I think sometimes we can be racist or sexist and not realize it. So it's good to openly discuss these issues so people become aware of their actions.

As for people using the term gay as an insult, I do not like that either.

MasterChiefrei 04-17-2008 07:45 AM

You know what really grinds my gears? Tonight's Democratic debate and what Hilary said about having the Republican party removed and how they screwed up even though it was HER husband that fucked us over in the first place.
When she said that I actually said, "You c***" and my mom just nodded when she'd usually yell my full name in protest. I don't care about that bitch, I'd rather have McCain vs Obama now.
As for having a gay president I wouldn't be against or mind since homosexuality doesn't strike me as a bad thing. People who get butthurt over it need to grow up and move on.

Peacock_Bones 04-17-2008 09:03 AM

what's really interesting, and i realize this now..

is that when people say, `` that's so gay `` isn't meant as an insult to gays anymore. it's a phrase of dislike used that's now been mostly detached from it's origins. every.. gay person i know, says `` that's so gay! `` all the time, including my straight friends, bi friends, etc. it's become a standard phrase now and it really isn't meant to be insulting, most of the time. at least, no one i know ever says it to be insulting to gay people.

critternator 04-18-2008 05:23 AM

I mean all of the people that I hear saying it are really discriminatory. And not just "That's so gay..." But things like "You fag!"... I don't know... I must just be the people that I hear saying it...

DJ Mango 04-18-2008 11:16 PM

Yeah, I know. It's sad how humanity
is nowadays. When I was younger I used to say " That's gay" Well, I never meant it as an offensive thing..cause you know.. I only was 9 and I never opposed sexual orientation. NEVER. So now I say "That's (a pile)shit" xD lol

And when someone says "fag" then just think of a pile of sticks. That was the original meaning..I think. >>

hariihyuuga 04-19-2008 02:56 AM

You know what really grinds my gears?
Crappy knockoffs that people think is a funny joke from the Family Guy Stewie movie.
One of my best friends does it too, and it makes me want to punch him in the face occasionally.

Kite 04-19-2008 03:01 AM

Rofl, at first I honestly thought this had some sort of relation towards Family Guy. *Shot* I need to stop remembering stuff off TV.

critternator 04-19-2008 04:58 AM

Well, I hope, hariihyuuga, that you know that saying was used before family guy.

RoyalSquishy 04-19-2008 05:08 AM

Meh, there are so many bad terms that are used nowadays, its almost ironic.

For example, people now openly use the N-word -I can't say it myself- as if it was a friendly term! I mean seriously, sometimes, the word doesn't even fit the situation! D:<

But, this world has so many insults to everyone, it seems pretty accepted, don't you think. Maybe those people can't find any better way to describe things (talk about a small vocab...no offense). Maybe they don't think of it as an insult and just use it because everyone else does. For example, "My God" is an insult to God (if you're a Christian), but people just continue to use it.

Well, I really can't imagine a gay president either. I believe so far, most of the population rejects these people because they can't seem to accept it. (Truthfully, I can't seem to accept it completely either)

I have a feeling that everyone is stereotyped, or "racist" because they all have feelings towards different races that they think are true, although some people ....express...it more openly then others. >>;;

-is sorry if this post offended anyone-

clock 04-19-2008 05:57 AM

Well, to me it doesn't seem too crazy for someone to be against racism and sexism while being homophobic. They are all completely different subjects. Those people may be open to some ideas, but it doesn't mean they have to be open to everything. [Eh, just trying to look at it from their viewpoint xD]

the hidden one and only 04-19-2008 08:20 AM

I cannot abide this on Gaia when every random teenager seems to say "that is so gay". I hate the lack of education it shows, and there total disregard for a whole population of people.

There will not be a gay president in the US till there is an open acceptance of gays throughout society. Sadly I think this will not happen in my lifetime. If a gay couple marrying makes people lose their minds, voting for one for president is beyond their imaginings.

Kalium 04-19-2008 02:00 PM

There are no homosexual people I know personally. Even if there are, they are too scared to admit it because they will face persecution, with society shunning them and all. But still, like clock said, racism, sexism and homophobia aren't all that related. If you ask me, this society will accept gay people, but not without heads flying first. It's never easy making people give up bigotry.

Jacob Black 04-19-2008 02:17 PM

Well the fact of the matter is that they were using it as an insult long before extremist homosexuals started crawling out of ther closets to do something for themselves. Personaly I think anyone who takes offese to racial slurs or any other form of generic insult is shallow and stuck in there own rut. The message I would like to deliver to all of those types of people out there is: GROW A MOTHER F***IN' BACK BONE!

It's a lot easier for people who don't fit in any of the afore mentioned categories to say such a thing, have you ever been discriminated against for anything you believe in or are? Probably not, other wise you wouldn't be saying these things..

[Sadist] 04-20-2008 02:14 AM

a lot of people use the kind of terms like "that's so gay" and they mean lame
and certain religion don't believe in gay marriage maybe thats why
but you have the right to voice your opinion so...
woo~!
bye
