"But I don't wanna send it back! ;o;"

So...hello there, Mene! :D I am a very happy person today. Well, at least when my parents aren't talking to me about what happened. ^^;

You see...last week, I bought myself a new guitar. This one, to be exact (and yes, I play left-handed - an accident at work left me unable to play "normally"). And it FINALLY CAME TODAY.

Problem, though - I officially hate FedEx now. They somehow managed to break the STYROFOAM that lined the box to protect it! Miraculously, the guitar is pretty much fine...except for the fact that one of the tuner heads broke off.

Now, I see this as a pretty minor issue. I can get it fixed, no big deal. As for now, I tuned it with a pair of needle nose pliers, and I've been happily playing ever since (and I have to say, typing is making my fingers hurt right now XD).

But my parents are pretty much freaking out over it. My mother actually blamed the manufacturers at first, saying it looked like a defect, until I showed her that somehow the protective junk was broken too, and showed her exactly where it was broken.

She's also convinced that I'm better off sending it back, waiting two weeks and risking ANOTHER shipping damage problem, than spending maybe $10-$20 to just get it fixed and handed back to me the same day, no threat of further complications.

Now, I'm finally managing to make her see my side of it. Or at least that part of it. But there is another side of it that's very difficult for me to admit to her...and that's what I'm here to discuss.

You see, somehow or another, I have already grown quite attached to the thing. I don't want to just give up on this one and have it replaced. It's MINE. It's already become the first electric guitar I've ever played. To me, it's like...leaving my baby at a hospital for him to be put up for adoption after treatment and just trying for another baby because the first had a minor birth defect.

A bit silly, I know...but I also know I'm not the only person who has ever felt this type of...bizarre attachment to an inanimate object. I'm sure other musicians especially will understand...I hope. ^^;

It's funny, I also had the same kind of attachment issue with both of my tablets. I actually cried when the first one broke. XD;

So, spoon time - PLEASE put these in quote tags if you copy-paste:
-- Have you ever felt a bizarre emotional attachment to an inanimate object shortly after receiving it?
-- Have you ever received an item that was damaged in shipping? Did you react...unusually to it?
-- Has such an emotional attachment ever kept you from having a damaged or defective item replaced?
-- Do you feel silly when you feel this way, or if you don't feel this way, do you think it's silly?
-- Is there a specific type of object you tend to feel attached to?
-- Have you ever assigned a name to an item like this? (I'm trying to figure out a name for my guitar, actually...XD;)
-- MY GUITAR - it's awesome, isn't it? ;p *shot*
-- Also feel free to discuss the evils of FedEx. *shot repeatedly again*

Aww, don't hate on FedEx, my dad works there. Haha. :3 That's a pretty guitar though, I'm glad you're enjoying it. If you got insurance on it they should probably be responsible for fixing it.
I get stupid attachments to things like clothing. Especially clothing that I know no one else around me will be wearing. And I'm also attached to Mene, of course. [does that count? xD]
I've never receieved a damaged object, but I think I'd be pretty upset if I did.

The only time I ordered something online I ordered some books form companies through amazon. Three books, two companies. One of them (the set) I didn't get for a month, so they sent me a new set. <3 The other... was wierd, I got an email saying they had to wait for it to be shipped, then that it had arrived there damaged, then they were getting a new one and shipping it out, and I got it a week later. A week after that I got second copies of the first two books I'd ordered. They had been sent to the wrong adress, and they kindly forwarded them to me. A week or two after that I recieved a copy of the third book I ordered.

So somehow I ended up with six books instead of three. o.o;;

I gave one to a friend for her birthday, and the set of two, X-Day, I put away somewhere safe, because I love that little two book series. n.n

Please don't read it. XD I don't want it to go mainstream, and it's out of print now. Keh heh...

Oh, you should name your guitar Alfred Alfrado (sp?) the twenty seventh. n.n

Hit FedEx employees with your guitar.
Problems solved! :D

I know what you mean about getting attached to inanimate objects! When I totaled my first car Claude, I felt so terrible...like I killed him. Even though my chin was bleeding, I was more worried about my car than me. My current car Addison is human-like to me too. I don't get along with him as well as I did with Claude, but I'll admit that I'd be devastated to have to get rid of him.

Also, I have two mannequin heads named Claudia(what is it with the name Claude?) and Nadine and there's no way that I'd get rid of them.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to say once I bought a new CD at Walmart(which is rare for me...I'm so cheap I usually wait for them to come to Goodwill). It was wrapped up perfectly with the stuff that covers the outside, but when I opened it, it had a fingerprint on it. I was a little concerned, but it didn't look scratched. I played it later and it won't play the second song at all. :evil: I was so mad because I went out of my way not to be cheap. I think I'm justified in downloading that song online though since I paid for it.

That is a gorgeous guitar. Maybe call the company or ask fedex to pay for the repair - because it isn't your fault so you shouldn't have to pay for it. Not give it up - just ask for compensation?

x-cutie-x-pie-x 04-19-2008 02:43 PM

wow shiny guitar. xD
I don't really shop online for my own stuff, seeing as I don't have paypal or credit card.

LadyGenivive 04-19-2008 02:51 PM

I know almost to a T what you mean, I am undeniably attached to anything that gets sent my way... and it's also probably the reason I am the biggest Pack rat in the world ^^;

I understand what you mean and if it were me, I'd fight my parents to the death for my right to keep my 'sentimental' guitar :P

Tomm3h 04-19-2008 03:12 PM

I know how you feel, a little.

I have the largest collection of JUNK in my closet (which is a walkin closet and has the little cubby hole thing in it. both of which are filled with junk.)
You could call me a Pack rat, and I wouldn't mind because it is true.

Right now My Nintendo DS Lite has a broken/cracked hinge and the Top screen is defected. It flashes red all the time. I am attached to my Nintendo DS Lite because it is pretty much my only entertainment other than the computer. Even so, My computer is so old that it can not play any games. I'd say my computer deserves to be thrown out, but I am also ATTACHED to it(>:]).

Arkeyla 04-19-2008 03:35 PM

I totally understand your feelings. I ordered myself a hardback copy of The Silmarillion, with beautiful art throughout it, from Doubleday. Nothing was wrong with it when it arrived, but as soon as I took it out of the package I was in love with my new book! It's one of the prettiest books I have ever owned, and I have read it too many times to count, I'm afraid!

Other books I have ordered have arrived slightly damaged - so unusual reactions though. I just pack it right back up and return it, waiting for my new copy. I don't really order anything besides books from Doubleday, so I haven't got any horrifying shattered-into-a-thousand-pieces tales of woe for you. Sorry!

I don't think it's silly to react emotionally to an inanimate object. Her, people are attached to childhood favourite toys etc, so why not a book or a guitar or even a hot water bottle that's new? If you really like something for whatever reason, it's normal to get all mushy over it. Maybe not a hot water bottle though...

Now, onto the potentially embarrassing question - have I even given inanimate object names? Well, I got myself a new computer chair the other day, and it is one of the most comfortable things I have ever sat it. It whizzes round really smoothly, looks cool, and makes that funny 'pff' sound when adjusting the height. Seeing as it's leather, I called it Cow. And the 'pff' sound is the expelling of methane. *grin* Normally, though, I save naming things for toys. My uncle has a guitar that he got my daughter to name - she was four at the time, and decided that it was going to be 'Mr Twangy'. The name stuck.

And finally, the awesomeness of your guitar. I don't know a lot about guitars, so I can't really comment. It does look pretty darn spiffy though!

amyrex2 04-19-2008 11:55 PM

Umm try talking to fex ex, maybe you can get them to pay to fix it, I would think it was insured. Then you could take it someplace locally to have it fixed and not have it leave our happy hands.

Just a thought.

skyefire27 04-20-2008 02:53 AM

~you betcha! i have this lovely little figurine of anubis that i got in universal studios about 2 years ago. the second i bought i was was absolutely attached to the thing. it was just so pretty and gorgeous and shiny. i just kept taking it out and petting it and whatnot. so pretty. i wouldn't let it out of my sight. even now it is standing above my computer, i look at it all the time.

~i don't really get that much shipping anyways, so no, i haven't ever received a damaged item.

~i get attached to my toys and clothes. my favorite stuffed animal "brown bear" is my favorite. hes so cute and cuddly i just love him to bits. and i always hate giving up clothes. i remember clearly now 5 specific shirts that i nearly cried when i had to give them up. there was that plain white shirt with the sunflowers on it, then there was that really pretty green paisley one that i loved, then the orange tank with the flower on it, and that lovely brown elf-ee looking shirt with the drawstring top... i loved those shirts so much. who cares if they are 7 sizes too small, i love them anyways. >.<

~well i named my cell phone once. its name was Juki. but thats about it. i have no idea why i named it, i normally don't. my friend however loves to name things. she calls her car Billybob.

~considering i don't play the guitar and the only music i play rarely is the keyboard, yes, that guitar actually does look pretty cool. its uber swervy and swirly lookin. :3

Fullmetal Phantom 04-20-2008 08:47 AM

@clock: Hey, I have nothing against the employees...as long as they're not the ones who mishandle my stuff. I dislike the company, though, because it seems to me their standards are awfully low. >.<;

But yeah...they'll probably end up eating the $10-20 it takes to fix it. And in the meantime...I have a pair of tiny needle-nose pliers I can keep in my pocket. ;p

And oh, god...attachments to clothing. XD Reminds me, I have this...hideous pink shirt from my female hormone overload phase. And I just can't bring myself to get rid of it, because it was the shirt I wore to the concert of my second celebrity crush (the first one I ever...you know, admitted to).

I'm embarrassed about even having liked him now, but for SOME REASON...I'm still attached to the hideous shirt. XD

@Burnt Biscuits: Wow, that IS weird. I wish I'd get extra things when I ordered them! XD

And if I ever read it...don't worry, only ONCE have I liked something "before it went mainstream" that actually WENT mainstream (or at least...is in the process of doing so). XD

@Go Ryu-Tan!: ...hmm, if I can locate the people who dropped it in the first place...

But...I don't want to get blood stains on my guitar. D: Maybe I can hit them with the box, though...I know how to use those things as pretty good weapons...hmm...>3 *shoe'd*

@juniper_silver: That's one of the reasons I hope I never get into an accident, ASIDE from the obvious. I think I'd get pretty attached to a car. D: I'm sorry for what happened there. :(

And...wow. I wonder how that could have happened? Ugh...Murphy's Law strikes again. >.< And as far as I'm concerned, you definitely have the right to download that song. You BOUGHT it, after all.

@Maria-Minamino: I'm probably going to try and negotiate something with the company and FedEx. Whatever I do, though, I probably CAN'T just send it back now...there are marks all over the part of the tuner I grabbed with my pliers. They'd think I broke it. ^^;

Oh well, I already saved over $300. >w>;

@x-cutie-x-pie-x: It's even shinier in real life. X3 As for when you can shop online...my advice to you is to always use UPS. XD;

@LadyGenivive: Haha...I have an old pinata that I rescued in the fourth grade that's still sitting in my closet. I, too, am a pack rat. XD

Glad to hear someone else understands. :3

@Tomm3h: Like I said to LadyGenivive, I'm a pack rat too. XD *pokes the pinata* His name is Bob. :3

But I know what you mean...I cried when my first computer got taken away. My dad decided to recycle the parts when I got a new one...had no idea why I was upset. I built that thing! It was special. D: But...he's not really the kind of person to really understand that kind of attachment. ^^;

@Arkeyla: Yeah...one good thing about books is that it's REALLY hard to damage them severely.

...but then again, the same can be said for protective Styrofoam. XD;

And I'm glad you understand that kind of attachment! Though I must agree...it would be a bit weird if someone got really attached to a new hot water bottle. o_O;

Cow and Mr. Twangy, huh? Those are awesome names. X3

And thank you! :3

amyrex2: That's what I intend to do. ^^;

@skyefire27: That sounds like an interesting little figurine. :3 And I know how you feel about getting attached to toys and clothes. I have this old HUGE teddy bear I got...before I can remember, and I still use it as a pillow to this day. XD; And then there's the hideous pink shirt I mentioned above...

Juki is an interesting name for a phone. X3

And thank you! :P

icandiee 04-20-2008 01:46 PM

Aweee.
My dad wanted to give my first puppy back to the store I bought it from >___<
And that made me sad :3
I remember GH 3, for the guitar, I messed the screw up, cuz of the wrong size, so then I had to wait for another week for more to come, it was so boring, so I just had to play controller GH xD
