Well. We all know different people have a different level of tolerance for different things.It's no big deal; it's a part of being human. It exists across cultures very obviously - for instance, in America, we may think it's gross to eat octopus, but did you know that in Mexico, rare meat is considered disgusting?

But on many subjects, things vary wildly even within the same culture - not to mention on the internet, you can never tell where anyone is from.

Which brings me to the discussion point - have you ever received an expression of disgust, or been disallowed something you saw as perfectly normal because someone else thought it was "gross," even though you really didn't see why anyone would think that?

For a couple examples - I have roleplay characters of all genders. Even a few with no gender, and one with both male and female "parts" (I have yet to actually use him/her in anything, though). I don't roleplay anything sexual, just because I never really feel like I want to.

However, on another site, where there was no indication of the gender of the users BEHIND the characters...someone flipped out on me when they realized I was a girl playing a boy.

Personally, I don't see why it matters, but...whatever. :/ I just saw another roleplay on here where I was disallowed from doing the same thing. Which sucks, because I wanted to join, but none of my female characters would be really fun to use there. >.>;

For another example, I was recently approached by someone wearing a faux diamond nose screw and a navel ring. She seemed disturbed by my lip ring. I couldn't help but thing, and was quite tempted to say "Hey, say what you want, but at least all my shiny junk makes people look at my FACE." I'm quite thankful I was able to keep from saying it. :sweat: But personally, I don't understand why it's any worse than any other piercing - sure, it CAN be used for "naughty" purposes, but not everyone who gets it done ACTUALLY uses it like that, and I'm one of the people who don't. XD; Besides which, with a little creativity, someone could probably use any piercing for "naughty" purposes. >.<;

So what about you? Have you ever had one of those moments where someone objected to something about you or something you did that was so normal to you (or looked like it should have been normal to them) that just...really confused you? Likewise, have you ever seen something that really disturbed you, and not had anyone understand why?

Share your stories. :D

My gauges have been of much dispute throughout my family. The topic of this thread is a similar reaction I get in all directions. They tell me that only freaks get giant holes in their ears (and mind, every single one of my closest friends HAS these massive holes in their ears.) I also wanted snake bites, but my parents also relate this to freaks (again, a close friend of mine has them.)

I think it's silly to be grossed out by a person's self modification unless it is just astoundingly over-the-top. (Double zero gauged nipples, maybe?) Otherwise, there really is no reason to overreact like that.

When I used to RP back in the day, I almost always played as boys, simply because I like boy characters better. Is a writer weird for having a male character in her book? It's really stupid for someone to freak out over you having a male RP character. :/

Well, I've been working in a military base kitchen and we made turkey today. All the fat and grease went into the bottom of the pan and settled out a bit. After we removed the turkeys one of the ladies reached into the pan and got some of the fattyness and ate it >_<

As for me getting reactions of disgust... some people think sushi is gross and I love the stuff.

Whenever I get a cut on my hand or finger I usually lick the blood off my skin. Its a habit I've had for awhile, but every time I do it in front of one of my friends or family members they always say how gross it is. The only one who doesn't mind me doing so is one of my cousins who I hardly ever see.

I also once had someone complain about the fact that I rp as a male character instead of a girl. It gets annoying sometimes because I work hard to develop a character, and then someone begins complaining that I shouldn't be rping as a male if I'm a girl.

...Wow.

The RPG I go to must be extremely open, then. I'm a guy. I started out there playing male characters. And then one day I decided to make a female character, and I absolutely *love* playing females. I see no harm in it. In fact, all my OC's I currently play are female. No one's said anything.

Now...MMORPG's are a different story, for whatever reason. I play girl characters on there (Because the girl outfits *rock*) And when people find out I'm a guy playing a female character, I get told how gross and weird that is, or asked if I'm gay.

It's ridiculous! I'm going to continue to do it anyway, so if you think your opinion is going to matter, you're wrong.

I hate how people think they can influence other people just because *they* consider it's wrong. They don't have any right to do it. *Takes in a deep breath* Sorry, I won't get into a rant ^^;

It seems some days, everything i do seems to disgust someone or other.

The other day i was walking down a street with my boyfriend who i haven't seen for months, (he lives 91 miles away) and some scene kid screams: EW!

I said, 'whats the matter? Too hetro for you?'

(P.S: I'm all for same sex partnerships and couples, but not for fashion's sake)

I am also overweight, and i get given alot of insults for dressing Lolita. Whats so wrong about that?

I lick my wounds too, my family also doesn't like it, but we're talking about my family here, they eat just about anything no matter how long it's been in the house or out on top of the stove (they haven't gotten any serious illnesses yet thank God), they have absolutely no manners, Dad chews tobacco and spits it in SODA cans knowing there are teenagers in the house and if they see a soda can they will drink whatever is left in it. (Yes, tobacco tastes disgusting and gives you mouth sores! I had to go to the hospital to get my mouth cleansed once because it was so bad, I no longer drink soda, so no longer need to worry). So in all actuality, they have no room to talk lol..

I guess I'm also a picky eater (I have this bitterness gene, so almost anything with salt in it is like a mouth full of salt, so there's a lot that I can't eat because it's actually painful to!) but I know my parents make some gross stuff, mom basically throws whatever is in the fridge in the slow cooker with a can of soup and calls that dinner, then leaves the remains in the slow cooker for a few days and tells me to clean it, she won't let me clean it before then because she says she's going to clean it out for dinner that night. They also make this taco soup stuff which is like 6 kinds of bean, canned tomatoes (hate those they taste like metal!), some kind of giant corn, regular corn, ground beef, tomato juice, ranch seasoning, and taco seasoning, (no she does not take the juice out of the cans before tossing it in). To me this smells, looks, and tastes gross, to them, well they eat it like twice a week..but I don't deny them it. *shrug* I guess I can be thankful my family is grosser than me?

Well, a lot of people think it's gross that I don't wear bras. I say, why the hell is it gross? What's gross about my chest that isn't on a guy's chest? Seriously.

On the contrary, Octopus is delicious here just as much as it is in Japan. I'm in Alaska, mind you, not the interior, and we have a plethora of fresh seafood. Squid is eaten more commonly because of calamari (where it's fried).

And typically, the idea of a girl roleplaying as a male, or vise versa is frowned upon purely because of the sexual drive the other roleplayers have. In the end, you'll notice, it always relates back to some sort of romance.

I'm willing to try any food and even if I don't like it, I'll probably eat more of it.

I have this friend who hates ketchup. That's fine, but she is SO FREAKING OVER DRAMATIC about it. I was stuck with school lunch the other day so I put ketchup on my fries (the fries are gross, ketchup is the only way to make them food-like), and she started screaming. I find this mildly amusing, so once at one of my parties I put a little ketchup on her leg (I'd say less than the amount you'd put on one french fry) and she didn't speak to me for like a week. It's really funny. She's so annoying with that, though. Like today, I was talking to her on the phone and eating cottage cheese (I rarely eat it, as it's not that great, but it's been a loooongg time since I've had it and I got a craving, and my mom had one of those cottage doubles in the fridge, so I ate it). She started freaking out telling me how disgusting that is. Wonderful. I don't comment on how repulsive I find her extremely high fat, high sodium, high refined carbohydrate diet, but she's allowed to comment on a snack? Twisted...

People look at me funny because of my pet rat. He's old, though, and I probably won't get another after him. And the fact that I went running yesterday (It was 95 degrees outside).

Hahahaha. The "naughty purposes" got me. I didn't know that people assumed you got a lip ring for that reason. I don't even see how it could be utilized as a "naughty" piercing. A tongue one, maybe, but I guess I've just never found some sort of barbell or ring of metal on me sexually exciting.
Just goes to show where a person's head is these days; not on their shoulders.

Ah, yes, gross foods to others? I eat a lot of sushi, which a lot of people lie about liking to sound high-class. If someone only orders kappa (cucumber) rolls, you know, they don't really like sushi, they just pretend. So you get a lot of weird looks when you order some bizarre fish and things. Of course, I've eaten bugs before, so there's nothing out there I wouldn't try after that.

Bajas rp characters are always male, D: I never get to far with female characters. I think that's why my avie is male... >.> Baja has been looked down upon like that though.
Mostly because of certain anime I watch. It basically involves incest, and even though I try to explain to people that I watch the anime I do, based on the storyline, more than who the characters fall in love with, its like they just don't get it. x.x
It even spills over to my rp characters. i made 2 OCs, they're twins and both male. People know Baja likes yaoi, so they automatically assume, my characters are going to do something of a 'suggestive' nature. -.-
Its annoying really. >.>;

heh, i see nothing wrong with playing a man and your female.
Actually this avatar is male, and i am female---i just enjoy men so much, i'd like to pretend to be one---not to be with *shivers* women...just to be a man for a small second :3

>,> but i have no problem with it~ nor would i have a problem RPing with a girl who was sitting behinde a male avatar.

I have a high tolerance for... just about everything that annoys/grosses out other people. Having a brother and growing up around about 1496230457 billion other kids from about as many cultures might have something to do with that, though. XD

"someone flipped out on me when they realized I was a girl playing a boy."

Srsly? O_o I'm a girl, and about 98% of all my OC's - roleplay or non - are boys.

College dinners with the one kid who has Doctors for parents and his own high level of no tact tends to either make you move tables or you have heard worse after a dinner with him so not much else he says shocks you now...that and eating there to start with mean you have all ready accepted odd food. My rule is if it isn't crawling for the door might as well give it a try.

As for the whole sushi thing, I lived in Japan for a year, so it would be one of the most normal things I ate there... and China out did that even. I tell you we walked in to a place there that served every part of the pig, and I will honestly say it was the first time I have lost my appetite... and I can also say no matter what warper Oreo are in they still taste good (It was the only thing that appealed to me after that, not to mention the only thing I could read aside from Coke... >.< )

That and my love of tuna fish, most the people I know hate it so I allways get odd looks when I eat it and often asked why I am eating it.

As far as RPing, I would say as long as you play what ever role you are trying to play well then I don't see the problem.

I just laughed when one of my friends on Gaia turned out to be a she. DarkAngelShire, she was back then. She had a male avatar and was role playing only a male named Saru. When she revealed herself, I was surprised a bit, but as I said... I just laughed.
Other than that, I simply prefer to role play as a female since otherwise my males turn out feminine. It's usually no biggy, but they rarely have that streak that teenage and adult males tend to have regarding girls. I just can't seem to get it right.

I lick my wounds too if I can reach them. I tend to get a lot of injuries around my elbows... so that's highly entertaining to see me attempt. It doesn't quite work to lick your elbow for most people!

Hehe I used to lick my wounds when little :'D But then I just stared at the bleeding wounds since touching would probably infect it ;_;

People think I'm nasty 'cause I like to eat seafood: Tuna fish, crab, shrimps, [name] fish, sushi, and even octopus x] But... they taste so good ;_; Also, most people don't seem to know that "guantas" don't even have an strong flavor, so with a good-seasoning, it's awesome T.T But then... I pretty much like to eat anything- from apples to snakes xD

Also, people find it weird that I like to pet iguanas :'D My cousin was like: "OMG keep that creature away from me! AHHH how can you touch it?!? Do not DARE to touch me after this!!" o_O It's not like I'm going to give you AIDS, ya' know? 8D

PS: I'm a girl >.>!

An online friend was shocked when I told her about my drinking horns. She couldn't grasp the idea of people still drinking out of horns that were on a cow once, like people did millennia ago :XD

I was a little bit shocked when I was in Egypt, and a small boy had a tiny crocodile in his hands. He asked tourists money for a picture with the animal. D: I couldn't stop thinking of the poor little thing, if they fed it right, if they would release it again... and the horses pulling carts there looked so ill and meager my aunt started to cry, especially when the cart driver treated his horse like shit, yelling at it and beating it with a stick ALL THE TIME while it already had scars and bald spots everywhere. I guess animal abuse is perfectly legal there if it earns you money T_T
