Being threatened by having someone look at you?.

I've noticed some people don't like to be looked at. I had that issue come up today.
I looked at another person and they went " WHAT?!!!".
Nothing else, I just looked at them. What's funny is because I do stories, that means my eyes resting on them might not mean anything at all...I may not be thinking about them much or not at all. I may be engaged in my stories, which in this cause I was.
Since most people don't get doing stories, I simply said I was resting, which was also true.

We're not paranoid, we're just used to people staring in a mean way...

Claudia 06-14-2008 05:34 PM

I do give some people mean looks on purpose. I did not in this case.
I can recall during my bike trip were at a museum looking at artwork. There's clearly a sign that says no photograghy. When they state this it means the artwork will be damaged by photography ( flash?) and they want to preserve it. Someone right next to me whips out a camera and takes a picture. So I turned around and gave them a dirty look. Some people seem to think it's OK to do this as long as you don't get caught. No consideration for the preservation of the artwork for everyone's enjoyment.

In those circumstances i heartily agree. Rules are in place for the protection of people and property.

But when people get stared at because of the way they dress, or the way they look, or something, that can get people paranoid, myself included. But yeah, i too rest my eyes and catch people glaring back. Some days i get a crick in my neck from staring at the floor so i don't offend anyone. :D

DelilahHeart 06-14-2008 05:54 PM

I can understand the art one why you'd glare at them. I love art so much... but before I go off on a tangent that will leave me on a completely different topic I have to say that I hate it when people stare at me because it makes me uncomfortable and then I get really paranoid like they're going to kill me or something... then again that's just me.

Moyra 06-14-2008 05:55 PM

I don't mind people looking at me no, i tend to get a bit freaked out when it's more than a min. My mom does it alot, she'll just look at me for who knows what reason and then i'm like "What?" And she's always "Can't i just look at you?" and i think no...
It just freaks me out. I don't like attention, or being stared at, lol.

Hypomanic Poet 06-14-2008 07:50 PM

I don't get freaked out at all. If someone stares at me, I stare 'em down. Especially my dog. He knows who's boss...Gehehe

Moyra 06-14-2008 07:53 PM

Haha i do that with my animals too. Though sometimes it freaks them out XD

Ariadne the Innocent 06-14-2008 07:56 PM

lol I stare at people all the time. I do so with a smile. It's amusing when they get creeped out. For some reason, they never say anything. xD

Though, I understand the art thing. I would be rather irritated if I had a piece of my art hanging, and someone just found it necessary to ruin the viewing pleasure of other people. I also wouldn't blame other artists if they were offended as well.

XD this one time in the lunchroom, a girl and I would look up from our food at the same time and we kept catching each other's eyes by chance and she asked me, 'Why are you staring at me??' and I had to tell her it was coincidence.

But yes, those of us that wear things that aren't the perceived norm, or are in the minority in some way, we do get a little paranoid if people stare at us. Because sometimes people do it maliciously, or they say things in hushed tones to make you feel bad about yourself. Personally, I learned to take pride in a few stares, but that took a lot of time to build and I can't be confident all the time...

Ithir 06-14-2008 09:36 PM

You can abuse people's perceived paranoia. ^^
Last year in the lunch room, my friend and I would stare at this table that had a lot of our guy friends, and we got free food to stop staring. xD

But I agree, it can be odd sometimes for people to look at you, but I like to just stare at them back.

Cherry Who? 06-14-2008 09:49 PM

Well, it would depend on who was staring at me.

If it was a grown man, I'd be freaked out. Inner thoughts of "HOMG PEDOBEARRAPIST HE'SGOINGTOKILLME OHGOD" and the like.
If it was a woman or teenage girl, I'd probably just get annoyed and give them a look like "...What?" and if they continued, shoot them a dirty look. Or stick my tongue out at them.
If it was a teenage boy, I'd be confused and uncomfortable. That never ever happens to me, so it'd be kind of weird. XD
If it was a kid, it's no big deal. Kids stare all the time. If the little kid was cute, I might smile at them or wave. But if they seemed bratty, I'd just ignore them.

But the only time I'd ever yell at someone who was staring at me is if they were doing it for a LONG time, and they were making eye contact. Not like, staring-off-into-space or just looking. Like if they were just STARING.
But I'd probably be a lot calmer than the lady who yelled at you. I'd probably just look at them like they were insane and go "...What?!" or "Can I help you...?"

Eithne 06-15-2008 06:59 PM

-shrug- I'm really the type to just look someone square in the eye. It doesn't threaten me at all. In fact, I sometimes find it kind of flattering that they're taking the time to look at me.

Clair Voyant 06-15-2008 07:59 PM

My brother is that way, too.
I might just look up at him and he'll notice and go "WHAT!?" and get all mad.
I love him, but sometimes, I wish he'd just settle down.
He gets angry easily and it frightens me sometimes.
I understand that he feels threatened (alot of people bully him) but he should know I would never hurt him.

kaileth silverwind 06-15-2008 08:51 PM

heh, thats just how I daydream. I stare off into whatevers in front of me, sometimes I notice someone getting offended and I look away, other times, like in one fun science class, I'd look at them because it makes them crazy. there was this one sophmore in my class I'd stare at him loosley and he'd just go nuts. he'd start yelling and screeming and thretening me and such and I'd just keep looking. the teacher tryed to say I was dissrupting class, but it was clearly HIM who was. wich was compleatly true, ah its agression like that that got me through highschool without a scratch. people just think of me as odd. I have a wierd stare. and its hard for me to hide my feeling in my eyes. if someone looked into my eyes theyd know exactly how I felt about them. I am bad at masking it, its why I avoid eye contact with my boss. lol

RainbowSuicide 06-16-2008 12:33 AM

lol, well I have a problume at staring at everyone for a really long time, for no real reason I just have nothing ealse to do so our just watch what there doing or wonder things about people, such as "I wonder what kind of people they like"....ect

kaileth silverwind 06-16-2008 12:35 AM

oh I can relate to that. I normaly just look for intresting eyes. I am obsessed with eyes. compleatly

RainbowSuicide 06-16-2008 12:40 AM

@kaileth silverwind- yes that too, like I find my self looking into some guys eyes that are talking to me/someone next to me...and then I wonder if they think I like them ^^;;

kaileth silverwind 06-16-2008 12:44 AM

hmm.. I'm going to ignore the last part there.. lest I lose a bit of respect for you. but yes, the eyes is a beuteful window. have you seen a blue eye with a white circle around the pupil?

RainbowSuicide 06-16-2008 12:52 AM

nope but my eyes were like that when I was born, but then they changed DX

kaileth silverwind 06-16-2008 12:55 AM

hmm odd. everyone I've met with thoes eyes are practicly saints. my eyes change due to clothing I wear. it is rather odd, but I am proud of it.

Actually, I'm very paranoid. They have to be smiling or something for me not to flip out, but even then they way they smile leaves me suspicious. =X

Eloise Moonbright 06-16-2008 02:48 AM

I get annoyed when my brother looks at me, but that's because normally he's trying to get on my nerves. Anyone with a sibling can understand this. xD

What happens to me a lot is that I zone out while simulaneously looking at one. So it ends up seeming like I'm staring creepily at someone else when I'm really absorbed in my own thoughts. ^^;; It's led to a few awkward situations before.

oh yes I'm so paranoid, I always think people are watching me thats why I hate leaving the house

Eloise Moonbright 06-16-2008 03:02 AM

I always think people are watching me through the windows when it's dark out. You know how you see clearly where the most light is? I'm always a little scared that my neighbors can see whatever I do. xD
