I just find it kind of funny how some people act so passionate about trivial things.
I'm currently in summer school for math AND chemistry, and the same girl is in both my classes. She's a bit obnoxious, and a little bit dumb... and I just noticed how much stock this girl puts into stuff like horoscopes.
In chemistry, we're on our break and this girl is FLIPPING on the teacher, asking for the horoscope section. She was going on about how she NEEDED to know her horoscope, how she couldn't start her day without it, and how she wanted to know if she was having "a 5-star day" (in the Philadelphia Inquirer, there are a number of stars that rate how good your day will be).
The teacher takes the horoscope section, rips it up, throws it away, and pours his coffee on it. He then opens up the business sections and reads about how inflation is going up and life essentials like wheat, potatoes, milk, etc. are becoming more expensive. Honestly, it was one of the best moves I've seen a teacher make in response to the idiocy.
Still, the girl didn't really understand. I feel it's such a shame that a general report about how 1/12 of the world will be having a "5-star day, and will be doing some thinking later tonight" can be considered more vital information then something that is effecting the entire WORLD.
Not to knock people that put real stock into things like astrology, because I find it to be pretty fun myself... but behavior like that? Ridiculous.
Spoons
- People neglecting real issues over trivial things
- People's indifference towards things affecting their country
- Horoscopes?
And whatever relates.

Some people need things like that to help them. More of a self-esteem issue. Have you ever noticed how they are all positive things about people? This is an effort to boost peoples self-esteem. Not so much guide them down some path.

People neglecting real issues over trivial things are stupit. i'm gussing the don't realy have any hard ship then how to dres for the day and such problems.
i have a loth of those types of bleach blonds in my classes and the drive blood from my finger nails. i cant belief the stupid things the care so much about.
if a hand bag is beeter then a back pak, what collor lipstick is better, and you can guss the rest.
People's indifference towards things effecting their country al loth. if every one stops caring aout things like. green, enviroment. if every on stop caring. things wil take a rong turn.
i'm happy most beach blonds are taking care not to use animale teseted products anymore.
Horoscopes or lol. the never make any sens and half of them are not tru.
thats becaues the are made for a o big o a group. male and female, ..14 to 70?
its a verry ig group to base everones horoschoop on.

@Bartuc: I dunno, I get the impression she's fairly mentally unstable so that's probably a very accurate assumption. She very openly talks about her home problems and her "depression", so.... who knows?
@Madd: If you actually knew the teacher, I'd be VERY surprised. Philadelphia Inquirer is in high circulation, and it's a very reliable newspaper (unlike Courier Times, that terrible propagandist...) so a lot of people read it. :3
Wickedpan-chan: >:3 BWAHAHAHAH! Glad I could get a laugh. That's always a side-effect I throughly enjoy.
But she was FAR from "bleach blonde". More like... ghetto-neighborhood type trash. Which isn't meant to be offensive, because I'm from a pretty ghetto neighborhood myself. XD

Wow I wish there were more teachers like that in the world XD I used to be like that. I wanted to stay in my own fantasy world where everything was fine and I didn't want to understand the problems of the real world. Then I grew up, got a job, and now realize most of it is effecting me in some way or another. Those who just ignore the world and want their daly horoscopes to tell them how their day is going to be instead of actually living it and choosing how it's going to be, are in for a real rude wake up call.

as friends would say +2 kudo's
that teacher rocks! seriously, i've seen quite some dumb humans but that one... got to be one of the dumbest ones ive ever heard off.
what i think of horoscopes? hell if i had to believe as the truth... i would be all signs of the zodiac, atleast 9 of them a week.
And if humans were THAT stupid... damn, i could make a fortunes with the most dumbest scams, like the pyramid scam... i could get away with murder by telling it was my evil twin-clone-brother and people would believe me.. even if i was standing with the murderweapon in my hand.

@Wickedpan-chan: LOL, yeah people like that can be pretty annoying, but for the most part I just sit back and enjoy the ride.
@Angel Naomi: EXACTLY. I used to be a rather apathetic individual myself, when I hit my early teens, anyway. I didn't care about anyone but myself, but even then I still paid attention to what went on in the world!
To neglect the real world in turn for a false reality.... and then to be obnoxious about it? That's one of the worst kind of people.
@nemesiss: He's honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Not only is he very humorous and intelligent, but he taught me a subject that I literally learned NOTHING ABOUT during the regular school year. And I am not a dumb person, either... my original teacher just taught it in a way that I couldn't understand. Now I'm getting straight A's and understand the subject better then my honor's student friends.

Yeah, but some people actually believe wholeheartedly in that stuff. These are the same people who go to fortune tellers because they can't make a decision about their future without first getting some "advice". People need to just realize that it is up to you to decide your future and you have to accept it if you make a bad choice. You can't depend on the decision of someone else so that you can probably blame them later if something didn't turn out the way you wanted.
It's sad if that girl really honestly believes in that stuff. And that teacher was awesome! We need more people like that.

Yeah, she really does believe. In my math class she had a "pendulum"; honestly it just looked like an over-glorified chain with a crystal pendent attached to it. She claimed that you ask it a question, and it would move depending on the answer.
She had a few people in awe, but really.. I saw her hand twitching slightly. Even the slightest movement can swing a pendulum, and I bet subconsciously she knew the answer to the questions she was asking and it influenced her movements.
Of course, when I said something... they all acted like I was totally ridiculous.

Heh, horoscopes. Mostly, I think their bogus. Astrology is a fun, personal thing for me, and I like to read my chart sometimes, but I don't think any of it has anything to do with the future.
That said, there is one weekly horoscope that I love to read, called Free Will Astrology. It's written by this really fantastic guy, and he doesn't do the traditional "predicting your future" bullcrud, but gives you a positive thing to think about during your week.
I think that was a cool move on your teachers part, to read about the issues of the world, because they really put our lifestyle and "needs" into perspective.

I look at my Horoscope almost everyday but I do it at the end to see if it was right. Somedays it's almost exact. Most of the time it will say I will want time alone or something on (ex. Friday) but I really wanted time alone on (ex. Thursday). They are kinda broad but they need to be.

Allow me to avoid the real discussion here by alerting you that effect is a noun, but affect is the verb, so you should be talking about things that AFFECT the world. :D
I did it! I did it!
Anyway.
@Bartuc Horoscopes are not a charity self-esteem thing. They're positive so that people want to read them, because the future is less important to them than feeling good about the future. There are some people who like astrology because they find it interesting or they really want to use it the way it was intended. The smart (yes, some astrology fans ARE smart) ones don't use newspaper horoscopes.
That girl should buy her own paper if it's so important to her.

Yeah, but there's nothing can be done. People have their own lives, trying to earn money. It's hard enough trying not to think about it.. There's nothing anyone can do in my opinion so why bother.
I only trust my Chinese horoscope, it's usually accurate, and it's more about getting you to do something positive then like.. yeah.. The other one is so ridiculous and like..vague..so I don't really care for it.

Not all horoscopes are positive, but I can see how people use horoscopes for that reason.
I myself have a vested interest in astrology, but I don't take it quite as seriously as that girl did...that's just neurotic behaviour.

I'll be sure to watch for that.
And thanks for the replies, everyone. I never said there weren't intelligent believers of astrology, though. I just think that anybody that takes a newspaper horoscope seriously is seriously lacking in certain areas.

That teacher's reaction was awesome. :XD
It's sad that some people really put that much belief in something like horoscopes, but it's even worse if they actually start paying fortunetellers. I knew a woman who was so poor she gave her children a ballpoint pen with their name on it for Christmas, but every month she sends quite a high amount of money to a fortuneteller, who sends a letter back with her fortune for that month. And those letters are ALWAYS full of crap that happens to everyone, like "you will meet an interesting person this month" or "you will have financial luck". Finding a 2-cent coin on the bus can be counted as "financial luck" according to her, and I see 2-cent coins lying on the floor at least once a week.
