Kids T.V shows going to far?
I made this thread because of the discussion I have had with a couple of my peers and a few members of my family. There are some people that find adult humor in kids T.V shows a bit to explicit for their young minds. I myself don't mind so much.
How do you feel? |
you see adult humor in a LOT of movies or shows aimed for the children demographic. that is so they shows are entertaining to the adults as well.
i see nothing wrong with it because the children are not aware of this kind of humor. i love going back and watching movies i grew up with and realizing they were perverted. it's just silly to me. |
Kids' shows have adult material in them all the time. Most Disney movies do, if you look for it. Most of us watched those as kids, and we weren't scarred for life; it's a bit of a joke put in to make the adults snicker. I don't think it's hurting them at all, really. Besides, there's no reason to treat kids like total morons. Shows that are horribly dumbed down for children make my head hurt. e_e
I looked at a couple of the pictures of Shakira in that show you mentioned; her outfit doesn't look at all revealing to me? o_O |

I totally agree with you! But I didn't notice it when I was little.... like all of the sexual themes in the disney movies. I never noticed it until now! xD

Some adults are grossly overprotective of their children and will be offended by anything. We don't have to protect our kids from absolutely EVERYTHING; mild exposure to the "adult" world is probably good for them anyway.

For those of you wanting the picture of Shakira's stomach on the show, its really not that bad.
http://i40.tinypic.com/vctnhh.png As far as youth television content going too far, I have to say that I'm in disagreement with those who think that its shocking and inappropriate. Television shows and other forms of media targeted towards younger audiences are trying to find ways to introduce current issues that face children and teenagers in safe ways that will teach them how to take care of themselves and be careful. Whether it's shows like Glee, which focus on being social outcasts and sexual urges in teenagers, or Wizards of Waverly Place talking about dating and growing up, these shows are giving their audience content that is neither too graphic or too mature for the people who are watching them. For the Shakira incident, that's too bad that people are upset about her state of dress. She's playing herself, and for most of her cameos on the show, she was very modestly dressed with the exception of the top which really only showed her sides. She wasn't promoting that its okay for young girls to go walking around in booty shorts with your ass hanging out and a see through top without a bra or anything (Miley Cyrus). She was portraying herself, and I'm sorry if that's how a mature pop star dresses. And for shows like Glee who have a teenage pregnancy, gay issues, infidelity, and other sexual issues involved, its nothing that teenagers aren't seeing at high school every day of their lives. When I was in high school, I saw at least twenty different teenage pregnancies over the four years that I was there. I knew plenty of people who were in bad relationships with cheating partners, learning about safe sex, seeing gay friends come out and learn to accept themselves and the like. Its not uncommon for these topics to come up in our every day lives so when people say that they're inappropriate for family oriented television, you can go back to your Brady Bunch, Little House on the Prarie shows and leave the rest of the world alone because you refuse to move on from the 20th century which was full of immense racial and sexual profiling, propaganda, corruption and bigotry. And that's all I have to say about that. |

I think that despite the fact that certain types of content are becoming more "open" these days, people in general are still way too overprotective and uptight about their kids. In fact, I was on a Facebook discussion forum once that was about a teen drama called The Tribe, and one woman was complaining that the show should be banned because, among other things, one character attempted to seduce another by stripping in front of him, and she complained that this scene was not appropriate for kids or teens to see because we see her bare shoulders. Come on, really? I saw bare shoulders all the time as a kid, and I'm not permanently traumatized. I really think we need to let some of this stuff go-- it's eating our culture alive. |
Shoulders. Seriously? Ugh, people these days.
If it weren't for the all the super conservative Americans in this country, we would probably have more decent television than we do. Think about shows that air in countries like Canada and in the United Kingdom that we barely get the chance to see in the US on scripted local television because it's deemed too provocative for younger audiences. Shows like Skins and Degrassi would give people in America something to really complain about compared to small stuff like Glee and the Wizards incident. They need to just move on and realize what their children is watching won't hurt them. Chances are they're already thinking about sex anyways before they hit high school. |

And I wasn't being intentionally insulting. I was merely stating my opinion and referring it to a general group of people. The way it was written came off as it directing it at a specific person (which could have been misconstrued at being yourself since you made the thread), but again, that wasn't my intent. I meant it towards a general group of people.
And for the record, I find them boring too. I have to watch them at my Grandmother's house because she likes her classics >> |

Yes, but not my beloved SpongeBob. iCarly: Too too far. Talking about the shape of a woman's boob. Fanboy and Chum Chum: Jokes about a a**hole. Yup, jokes about your a**.

Spongebob has some pretty adult subliminal messages. |

These days it doesn't really matter. Young children will not understand certain humor that may be considered "too far". Alix, as for the "don't drop the soap" phrase, I don't think most young kids would even understand that completely (and yes, it is rather funny if you do understand it. ;P). And the truth is, nowadays kids know so much more than they used to. I have kids on my bus around 7-10, I am a senior in high school, who talk about how their friend told them all about sex organs and what they do with them and the reason why they know that is because their parents let them watch movies with it in there. I don't think shows are going to far, honestly. It the parents fault if a child learns "too" much if they let the child watch things that are too inappropriate for young kids.
