OK, so something that happened to me today inspired me to write this. I have two real 'subjects' so it may be a bit much to read (Sorry!)
Subject 1
So, in our English class we have a thing called 'OAS' (basically like problems of the day or warm-ups) to prepare us for the English CRCT (which is tomorrow). Well I left mine in my locker/lost them so I freaked when we had to turn them in at the end of class. I copied my friends, but lost her paper. Then I let her copy my paper (which I had copied from hers) but found my own OAS paper after. So, when we went to turn them in, someone had found my friend's paper and turned it in for her. Long story short, we are both getting 0s on the assignment and write ups (even though technically, we both did the assignments without copying beforehand). Now, do you think we should still be punished? There is a possibility of us going to ISS (in school suspension, where we go to this one classroom and do work the whole day and can't speak whatsoever) which really freaks the both of us out considering we have never done anything like this before and have really never been in trouble before.
So, things to discuss:
-Should we be punished? If so, how and to what extent?
-Should we be sent to ISS?
Subject 2
Now that we are on the subject of cheating, is it ever right? Seriously, I want to know what you guys think. Say, for instance, you cheat/copy from an assignment that you forgot to do, and it is a very crucial assignment (you could have forgotten for any number of reasons: sports, studying, after school activities, family problem, too much other homework, or you just didn't get a chance). Is it right to cheat then?
Again, things to discuss:
-Is it ever right to cheat?
-Give an instance if you cheated and why (don't say you never have, we all have, be it from/in a game or in a relationship, on a test or just copying homework)?
-When does it cross the line from just little cheating (i.e. homework, in a game) to full out bad-never-do-this-kind-of-cheat cheating?

I'm guilty of cheating.. D:
I always feel bad after. I think it's safe for one to admit that cheating isn't ok, but we do it anyway. When it comes to cheating on a partner, I think that is terrible. Cheating on a homework assignment or a test, not that horrible because a grade depends on it. Ehh, my opinion. I hope it makes sense.. xD

The only thing you do when you choose to cheat is to cheat yourself out of free education. You hurt no one but yourself when you cheat. Sorry to hear about the odd circumstances that caused you to get in trouble...that sucks...

Haha, thanks Tutela. The ironic thing is, is that technically we didn't even need to cheat. We both found our assignments, and I find it kind of odd of our teacher to still make those grades 0s because she knows we both originally did them without cheating. However, I'd rather accept a 0 than go to ISS (which is still a possibility that might happen).

It's never right. Cheating is cheating. If you have a valid reason as to why you could not do your assignment, your teacher will more then likely let it go, as long as you do get it done. And most of the time, at least where I am from, the teacher will let you turn it in late with some points deducted. Explain to your teacher why you couldn't do it.
My school is very sports oriented, and a majority of the students in high school have part time jobs along with sports. If you have a study hall, you are expected to do it then. Any free time in another class is part of it. If we can't turn in an assignment, we are given one extra day (if the reason is valid) to turn it in for full credit.
It's your fault you lost it/forgot it. You should have remembered, and that is no excuse. It'd have been easier to say "I left it in my locker, can I go get it quickly?"

I understand your point Pweep, but the thing is, is that I DID do it. She seems to not realize that we BOTH originally did it. Yes, we did resort to copying later but we both did the assignment. It wasn't even homework or for a real grade (I don't believe). She gave us the answers and all, and it wasn't homework or a test or an assignment. I turned in my ORIGINAL paper and my teacher had my friend's original. I don't think we will get into much trouble, we're both straight A students. I competed in an academic relay for a pep rally because of my grades and athletic-ness, and neither one of us has ever had a write up or even a 'lunch' detention before. My teacher doesn't take late grades or let us go to lockers to get it. Also, we don't have a study hall at my school. We both did it, so I don't see the point in why she is giving us 0s for the assignment, or if we were to get ISS.

Well, I think that your teacher isnt thinking straight. I mean, if your friend and you turned in or even showed her your real papers, she should know that you did it. And about cheating, kinda like Alixness I feel really bad after cheating. I dont know why, everyone else in my class just copies and gets away with it but i dont like to do that. I know that you had a reason to though so it doesnt really matter, but if you look at it from the teacher's point of view, she probably thought that you just forgot to do the assignment and you just wanted to get it done.

Yeah, I can kind of see it from her point as well. I know that a lot of people copy in our school, and it has been happening a lot lately. She said thought hat she hates the position she was put in by this. I feel terrible about it. I felt so bad about it at the end of the day, that in my last period of the day I almost started crying (my eyes got water-y). I can't really do copying or I feel bad. I've done it once or twice but I immediately felt horrible Dx We haven't gotten in trouble yet whatsoever, though we've had little scares when the vice principal called my friend out to his office (it was to make up one of our big end of the year tests) but none of them were about it. The teacher has been acting regularly, even nicer, to us though so I don't think she did anything, but I won't really be sure until the end of next week. I don't think the principal/vice principal would call us to their office this week because of the tests, but I'm just trying to stay in the mind set of 'Since nothing has happened already, nothing is likely to happen'. It's hard though :/

I've cheated on a homework assignment before, and even on tests while in Elementary School. I've grown much more mature since then, but sadly there are still people my age who continue to cheat like little children. As for cheating on partners..well that is just unforgivable. At least dump the person first before stooping down to such a low level.

I've definitly cheated on things like tests before. Mostly when I was in elementary school. I'd keep spelling test answers in my desk or something. I've also copied things off a friend, and let friends copy me. Sometime's you almost need to cheat. Some teachers make difficult tests, without teaching what the students need to know. That's my experience anyways.

Yes. You should be punished.
You should have told your teacher that you lost them and asked for a one day extension.
If that didn't work, take the zero.
A detention would be much better then an in school suspension though.

No. It's never right to cheat.

One time I cheated... I was dating a guy who didn't understand the term "over". I -tried- to leave him time and time again, so finally I gave up. And I cheated on him.
I didn't hide it, but it took him a long time to find out.
I felt bad the entire time, not because I was cheating on this guy, but because I was technically cheating on the other guy.
Eventually he found out, and man it felt good. Relationship of death... Over. <3 I still feel bad about it, but this boy couldn't take no until it was laughing in his face.

It crosses the line when it goes from one question on a test in another language (like Spanish Class)
To one question on an exam on a major class (such as Math)
Or for relationships.
When it goes from trying to break up with someone who doesn't understand what it means to break up, to having multiple boyfriends/girlfriends for the pleasure.

So true.
I'm in a Spanish class, and I did a test on Tuesday.
More then 85% of the questions I couldn't read. I've been playing close attention in class, and even trying to learn a little bit on my own. It's rather sad that I couldn't understand the test.
The highest mark on that test was a 95%, and below that 23% (The girl who got 95% is Spanish, and taking the class for some easy credits).

Cheating is never right in any situation. But when it comes to school work (aka, one person assignments, tests, quizzes, etc), you should never do that. It's someone else's answer on YOUR piece of paper. I think that it's better to study and figure things out as much as possible, and if you have a question, just ask the teacher. They will probably be inclined to give you a hand. I know that I've asked my teacher plenty of time to help me when I've gotten stuck, and couldn't figure something out myself. Though when it comes to tests and quizzes, do the best that you can. If you need to, study with friends and other classmates BEFORE the test. Even if you fail without cheating, you know that you did the best you could. And you won't have guilt following you around until you confess that you cheated.
I've failed a LOT of tests, even after studying my ass off. But I know that I did it on my own.
Though this one time during a test, my teacher left the room, and I was still working on my test. Everyone started to ask what the answer was to certain questions. And one of the ones answered was one that I was trying to remember. I'm fairly certain I had the correct answer in mind. So what was I supposed to do??? Put down the classes answer or mine??? Even though they were the same thing??? Unintentional cheating I suppose.
I don't think that I had ever cheated on anything else though. I was a good student in school, and was pretty much the "teacher's pet". I hated when people called me that. I just did my work the best that I could. I wasn't the kind of kid to goof off and purposely fail assignments.

Ehh, to be honest. The only time I have ever learned something in school. Is that your grades don't mean anything. Yeah, they can get you into a "Good" college, and blah blah blah. Cheating on a test or quiz. Yeah that's kinda wrong. No big deal though. But thats my personal opinion. Cheating on your significant other, that is absolutely inexcusable. It's low, cowardly, and utterly pathetic. If ya gotta get your rocks off, then just leave them and save them the torment and trust issues they will have down the road.

First of all, cheating is not always a mutual thing. For example...
A girl has finished her assignment and has it out on her desk ready to turn in. For whatever reason, they are given a one-day extension. The girl forgets her paper and a classmate picks it up and copies it for the next day. The original artist prints out a new copy and turns that in while the cheater turns in their copied paper. They both get 0's because neither will admit they cheated.
Not fair the original person who did the work. Cheating often involved plagarism which is against the law to begin with. If your just copying answers then your getting credit for something you don't deserve because you didn't do the work yourself. Not only are you cheating yourself but also the colleges that accept you and give a degree when you cheated.
