Abortion?
Hi everyone,
What is your opinion on abortion? Do you consider yourself pro-choice or pro-life? Or even somewhere in between? I had this debate with a few friends a few week ago, and it also seemed that different religions have different perspectives on this issue. What is your point of view, and how is it similar or different from what your religion might prescribe? When does life start to exist, in your opinion? Do you believe abortion should be restricted to only certain situations? If so, what are those situations? If you believe abortion should be allowed (which it legally is), do you think there should be a cut-off time before abortion should be discouraged? Discuss! |
I believe abortion should be legal, and legally accessible everywhere for any reason at any time during the pregnancy for a woman. Laws that regulate how, when, and where, are--in my opinion--remarkably harmful to women's rights and it's frustrating to see that the United States has legally recognized a woman has no right to privacy at a certain point of pregnancy--a.k.a. "viability." I also feel that laws regulating the speech of physicians is absurdly offensive.
Life, to me, begins at birth. I'm not religious, nor have I ever been. |

Anyway, they are requiring that physicians tell patients false information, such as that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. I agree that it's absurd and offensive to spread this kind of falsehood. |
As it happens, I did see his segment. I'm also doing research on that very topic for my class (health law); compelled physician speech. A major issue that it encompasses is the quality of care someone receives in their healthcare because lobbyists and legislators who wrote the laws aren't physicians. That includes saying things like abortions cause breast cancer; the implications extend beyond just women's healthcare, but for now--as most legislatures and courts are dominated by men--they govern mostly women.

I used to be religious and pro-life.
Then life happened and my views on issues like this radically changed. I used to be very sheltered and agreed with whatever information was fed to me by my parents and family and what they watched. But... I found after I moved out and started living my own life, meeting other people and learning more... yeah. I'm pro-choice. If you are against abortion. Don't get an abortion. Do what is right for you. But you can't control other people or expect the government to do it for you. Live your life the way you feel your life should be lead and let others do their thing and do what they feel is best for them. |
I am pro-choice because I believe in bodily autonomy.
You can't force someone to donate blood. You can't even force a corpse to donate its organs. So what exactly makes anyone think they can force a woman to "donate" her womb? Frankly, it doesn't matter one jot to me whether the fetus is considered a life or not. People who need blood transfusions are lives. People who need organ transplants are lives. But if the individual, alive or dead, doesn't wish to donate any part of their body to save them, then their bodily autonomy- their right to their own bodies- supersedes the potential of their body parts to save a life. |
