You must be going to the wrong places if you're seeing a predominantly female audience on the internet. If you go on Massive Multi Online games it's like 70% males and 30% females if even that.

You obviously aren't very well acquainted with MMO's like Trickster Online.. Ragnarok Online... Sims online ;P

And on to the topic of Women outnumbering Men... as a Geographer... (we study people more than land and such... really, we do) I can say that though Women outnumber Men, it isn't a vast enough number or amount to raise flags over. The world is still recovering from it's major wars. What do the wars have to do with it? In the past (and today even), 90% of the military was men. In the wars, [between 50, 60, and 70 years ago time slots] you'll notice the female population being greater than that of the male population. That's the bottom line... NOW a more important issue from this is the birth rate of developed civilizations. But... no room for that in this post.

If you don't understand why, ah dear. X3 Punnet Square.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punnett_square

There aren't more males born than females.

The reason more females survive to an older age probably has something to do with male behaviors that are unhealthy for us. Like...drinking, smoking, engaging in high risk activities, etc. to sort of flaunt or show off.

Sounds bad eh? But pause a second and think about peacocks for example. They have stupidy large gaudy heavy tails to attract females..but it causes increased predation. They show off, but it's at a cost.

Baboons...males flaunt, fight other males, blah blah for females, and so male mortality goes up there.

Same in fish, same in brightly colored birds, etc.

Not that it's a "good thing" but it just happens. Even among species where there isn't really awesome coloration and such, males spend more energy getting attention, in increasing reproductive success, and that success comes at some cost.

In humans, that may come in the form of say, working from 7a.m. till 5p.m. every damn day. XD Yeah you get money, you get a house, you get a lovely wife and kiddies, blah blah but it has to take a toll on a person you know? Not that women don't work. However, I bet if you track down people that have to work vs. people that don't, all else being equal (saying, they get food, good health care, blah blah) the person that works more dies earlier.

Men do more "risky" things, or things that are "bad" I guess, because our society doesn't mind it. Drinking, smoking, smoking while drinking, drinking while driving, stuff like that, I bet you'll find the numbers for that are higher in men than in women by many folds. Can't tell me that helps our survival. ^^'

I think overall, if you were able to obtain say, a sample size of 50 men and 50 women who didn't smoke, drink, do anything even vaguely "risky" and both spent equal amounts of energy as far as job and other-gender-attraction goes, you'd find they live to about the same age. Possibly the female might even live shorter because she would have to spend energy into producing some child; that and those monthly dumpings of uterine lining doesn't come without cost.

Well actually there is a sever shortage of girls in former communist China and Russia. From when families could only have one or two children and they would kill baby girls. So I suppose that it is at least pretty even if not like 60 40.

Jedi Master 04-25-2007 03:15 AM

I agree with the fact that theres too many girls....god I cannot get a date, all the men around here are taken! I know in reality that its not too much off number wise, but still!

kuroki13 04-27-2007 10:43 PM

people are able to choice the gender of their baby now, and a lot of them seem to choice girls. it probably isn't much of an issue now but it may be in the future.

Charisma 04-28-2007 10:55 PM

For places like this and Gaia, Girls simply have better outfits.

But IRL, what really annoys me is the huge amount of women is colleges (Imma chick) which makes it harder for women to get into college (not that I have to worry about it anymore.)

And on a random note, In China, there are 110 boys to 100 girls, though globally there isn't that much of a difference.

kaptain kooky 04-29-2007 10:24 PM

I notice this almost wherever I go and hell even in my own house I notice it. My boyfriend was just telling me the other that day that out of like 15 or so people in a cafe him and this other guy were the only males in there. Even where I work I notice there are more females then males. You never really think about it unless you actually sit down and think about it.

Even when I worked at Subway it was all girls and like one guy, boy was he happy lol. There is a study that says that sometimes when a person is under a lot of stress when they are pregnant that they are more likely to have a girl so maybe a lot of women are more stressed out now a days and who could blame them.

My sister-in-law is now pregnant and already has a little boy so I'm hoping for a girl. It makes me curious though that since she is a student and is now trying to be a teacher that maybe some stress will help me have another niece running around >.>

Well, pixel sites are not really boyish to a lot of people. Although I am a straight, have a girl friend, guy who playes.

Melody 05-03-2007 05:25 AM

Girls have a better chance of being born then boys. because boys have a y chromosome is something is wrong on it the x may not be able to cover it. girls have two x chromosomes and so if something goes wrong on one in development the other x will take over that characteristic adn so nothing (probably) will go wrong. during pregnancy girl fetuses can also handle stress better for that same reason. and in todays high stress world of working mothers, being able to keep the baby is important.
In the world I do think there are more females then males but its not by alot.

the gender of an avi on sites like these also dont dictate the gender of the person behind the avi. some guys just realize that the girls have better clothing options and so they will opt for the girl avi. its a little bit decieving, but youre mainly on the site to make friends and dress up these little pixel dolls, want your doll to look the best, chances youll have a female. i havent seen a male admin choice yet. (but then again ive only been here for like a month if that...)

scarletstratholme @ Girls do risky behavior too. they (we) drink, smoke, drive while doing both, put make up on while we drive what have you. we also try to look good fr men, stiletto heels, short skirts, make up, fake eyelashes, push up bras. . . proving that other speciels of males do stupid things to attract a female is kinda pointless when human females do more stupid things to attract males.

Chaitealatte 05-03-2007 06:39 AM

My psychology teacher said - and I've heard it said before - that the birthrate is swayed 52/48 (Or it might be 51/49), with the extra two per cent being on the female side.

Also heard it that, in times of stress - say, famine - more girls will be born because the womb is more likely to treat a male foetus as "alien" (that little Y chromosome there) and kill it off if it's not particularly strong.

More male babies were concieved during the two world wars, but I can't remember a theory why right now.

Also, something like 4% (I need to check this) are neither XX or XY. You can get all kind of chromosome mix-ups.

And gender isn't necessarilly biological sex, so... xD *shutting it*

Mene does seem to be geared more towards stereotypical girls with the whole dress-up aspect, as, I think, is Gaia. But a lot of people throughout the world don't have access to the internet - or feel they have better things to do with their time.

i learned the same things in my human sexuality classes and in psychology. and its kinda what i posted as well. (: yay for reitterating what i said XD <3

Well, all in all, there may be quite a few men around here that just choose to have women avatars. =P

And anyways, maybe this'll mean the coming of a matriarchical society?

as nice as that sounds it would be... i dont think it would really be all that nice XP
As women start working more it seems less nad less know how to mother because they werent mothered themselves. and so it kinda makes a decline in my opinion of society. people dont know their parents as well because their parents are both working and sometimes working 2 jobs or extra shifts to pay the bills. whos there to care for the kids?

Kazzy1231 05-11-2007 04:00 PM

So, are there too many girls in the world today? Don't think so. Or am I worrying about this too much? A bit.

GainaSpirit 05-11-2007 04:06 PM

The only fact that thise website is full of woman is because the majority of the men aren't interesting in those type of community. If you think clearly, all this as to offer, is dressing up a little dolls... they aren't really fond of dressing up little dolls O.o
They would need something more interesting, like a text-based rpg. The only guy I crossed around those kind of community was because they offered a text-based role playing game.

Dannigirl 05-14-2007 10:18 PM

Well, Im sure there isnt a lack of boys. Its just that there might not be alot of boys in the area you live in,or you just dont notice them.
Well, girls they do intend to have longer life spands than guys.
Tho, on places such as Gaia and Menewsha, some of the avi's we see can either be a girl or boy on a mule account of the opposite sex.
When you dont really know someone in real life, its hard to tell if they are just on a mule as a girl, if they are a guy..

Seven 05-14-2007 10:35 PM

Not sure i mind being outnumbered by females. Can't really see the downside to it, and yes, i notice the huge girl/boy ratio on avatar sites, but again, i have a hard time being against it.

tigerangel 05-14-2007 10:43 PM

The girl/boy ration of regulars on both the hangout and the RP I belong to is fairly even, so it makes for a good time for all.

suppi 05-22-2007 02:31 AM

I think it's equal. There aren't too much boys or too many girls. But sometimes when I look in my classes, I see much more boys than girls. xD

Sometimes it does seem like there are more females then there are males. thats because there are 51% females and 49% males in the world. Also maybe you don't see many guys running about since a lot of them are hiding behind their xboxes and ps3s D:
I dont think the world will end with a sudden imbalance of genders.
we got other apocalypse ideas that are more worrysome

Manifest Destiny 06-07-2007 03:22 AM

The avatar sites are a lot of times more girly so more girls are on them sometimes

I tend to agree--boys would rather (in general) play games that allow for fighting and battling to these type of communities that are chat-based. This can be seen in real life as well--littel girls tend to play games that involve communication and boys play more active games.

There's no gender imbalance in the world, there's a gender imbalance in the online world depending on the sites you frequent.
