is progress, growth, and advancement important to you? should it be deciding factor in considering new ideas and debates?

okay, here is what I mean, would you limit personal freedoms if it meant it was for the benefit and well being of the overall population? who you put your own needs or the needs of others ahead of every thing?

say you could cure AIDS forever, AIDS and every other disease so that they would be gone forever and never seen or heard from again. but to do this you would have to ban sex outside of a governmental selected breeding program for about 100 years. this means you would not get the choice of who you would get to have sex with or if you would get to at all, making it a capital offense. would you sacrifice your own personal freedoms if it meant a better and brighter future for the next generation?

Well, we already pretty much given up our freedom for a better future. I'm talking about America here, for those wondering where i'm referring to. We limit so much about ourselves here, no smoking, when we drink, how we move, when to talk, and everything else you can put your finger on. I mean, it's for a safer and better world, so why not?

Truthfully, i hate that America has so much restriction to it, but compare to other countries, you can understand that perhaps tough love is needed. Either way, would i sacrifice my freedom for my better being? You could say i've every have.

Sex? Yeah I would sacrifice that for a better tomorrow. I don't think it's all it's cracked up to be, more hype than anything else. I believe that if we all work together, we can build tomorrow with no loss on any side of the spectrum. I would however not give up my natural borm rights as a citizen to better this world, I do have my limits.

Frankly... I'm surprised it hasn't been suggested that we isolate AIDs victims and ban them from sexual activity already. It's how we've gotten rid of communicable diseases in the past.

It's not a 'cure' either--it's just letting the disease die off on its own. If no one is infected, then it cannot be spread.

No. I don't think doing something like that for the sake of progress would be good. It would impart too much control into the hands of the government and take away too much personal freedom. It'd have disasterous repercussions.

Not only that, we're not even sure if that would even work. It'd be a shot in the dark with too high a margin for error to be feasible.

I dunno... I like my freedom a bit too much. I'm always a bit suspicious when someone else says that I should do something because "it's for the good of the children" or "it's for the sake of the next generation" or "if you don't, the terrorists win!"

That depends. Would I give up my own freedoms for the sake of the future generation or the world as a whole? Of course. Parents do that all the time. Would I ask someone else to give up their own freedom for my sake or the sake of the world? Absolutely not. I have the right to give up my freedoms, but no one has the right to take them from me without my consent. That is a choice.

In this example? No, I wouldn't, because real world diseases don't work like that. In a magic world where they did? No, I wouldn't ban sex like that. I might give it up myself, but I wouldn't force others to do the same.
Anything concerning someone's rights is a personal choice. I don't feel I have the right to demand than anyone else make the same choice I have, regardless of how wonderful the benefit to humanity would be.

Was what I was thinking. And with AIDS? First you'd have to get everybody testing to see whether they were HIV+ or not, and people would resist for personal reasons and as far as I understand you have a right not be forced into something. Trying to get people to abstain from sex is ridiculous (has your libido woken up yet? It's a tricky thing to deal with, especially when unsatisfied) because its an integral part of our existance (no sex, no reproduction, no continuation of the human race - the instinct doesn't give a monkey's whether there's a virus wriggling around in there). There'd be people defying the goverment, not getting caught, etc, etc...

Besides, there are other measures - like male circumcism - that can reduce the rate of infection. Maybe not rule it out, but reduce it. Then you can hardly make that compulsary either.

I reckon education is the best route, but you can never ensure that people are listening...

Progress is important, but it can't be forced, and whether or not it's happening or we're regressing is in the eyes of the beholder.

Wow, I feel mean.
I would never really give something up for 'The Greater Good'.
Heck, I want to enjoy myself while I'm alive. "That child is going to die unless you risk your life to save her!"...Truth be told, I probably wouldn't. Because if I died, what made my heroic act so good? Sure, a little glory in the news and mourning and such, but why would that matter? My goal is to wait until I'm old, smart, etc; and then teach information to others. Ways to live, etc. Society is very uptight these days, which certainly isn't the way to go.
