Should there be a white history month? I feel there should to be fair but it will never happen because the moment anyone says it people jump all over them screaming racism or saying that we're enforcing white supremacy.
Should we get rid of all those months? Personally, I think the only people who ever pay attention to what month it is that we're celebrating whatever is kids in school. And I think most of us know from experience that you really could give a flying fig about whatever month we're celebrating. Why are white people so damn afraid of being racist? Because of the KKK and it seems like african-americans are not done making us pay for slavery...as if America is the only place in the world to have ever held slaves or sold them for profit. Or anything else you find controversial in my post. Nah, I think it's all been covered. |
Well, I wouldn't really call it as a "white race." We have so many different cultures that are considered "white." Maybe it would be too much to celebrate? I personally think that we shouldn't celebrate accomplishments based on race, though. Culture, I guess. But race? Uhm... If we celebrated culture, then there would probably be too much culture and not enough months, though... |
What we really need is a Native American history month. They were in America first, then the thieves came. >.> What pisses me off is that an entire race of people is going extinct an no one seems to care. Why is this so important to me? Well, you see I'm half Native American. And I just believe that its not fair. Though, I know life never is. But hey, everyone else gets to complain, why don't we?
|
This is what happens when you have an (Insert Race) Appreciation Month at all. Every other race tries to jump at the opportunity to get their own. We'd be much better off without those months.
I get the whole idea of "spreading the culture," but we have history classes for a reason. People are saying that we don't learn anything about the cultures celebrated in those months, but we do. If you look at a modern textbook, there is most likely a chapter on African American and/or Spanish culture and history. As for whether or not there should be a White History Month, definitely not. The only thing that would bring is protest from everyone else, not to mention it would probably gain support from all the Southern white supremacy groups. :? |
Should there be a white history month?
Should we get rid of all those months? Why are white people so damn afraid of being racist? Or anything else you find controversial in my post. it makes sense that there should be one, but the country is kind of "white" based if you think about it. also, we celebrate Lincoln's birthday, for example, as well as many other "white" people who have done good things in the past. I don't think we should get rid of those months, because it adds diversity and a chance for many to learn about other people's cultures. besides, what would a white history month be? what is white culture? a bunch of fat(not that there's anything wrong with being fat) , pale s drinking beer, watching football, smoking ciggarettes, and just generally sitting on our fat asses. that's what most white people are perceived as doing nowadays. not all white people do that though, i don't speak for everybody. White people are afraid of being racist because they are always accused of as being racist. also, it's in our history! we were s! we thought people were inferior just because they were different! |

I agree, I am fascinated with native american culture, and dammit! we are theives! and we ed up their country! |
Well, let's see. What do you know about white (caucasian) history? vs. What do you know about black history?
Also, we have black history celebration because the society that started it is predominantly ruled by whites, who found out the errors of their ways and want to apologize. Like my history teacher says, history is written by the winners. And most definitely, whites are the winners in history. Thus, we ARE learning white history, as of everything we know from school. We SHOULD spend time off and learn from a different PoV. so, should we have a white history month: nope, it's unnecessary. Should we get rid of all those months? They'll die down after a while. Why are white people so afraid of being racist? Because law schools are pouring out law students by the hundreds. Controversial? Hey, we're all entitled to our opinions. |

More importantly, why can't I be proud of being white. If I said "I am proud of being white." then I'd get yelled at and called racist. If an Asian, Hispanic, black, middle Eastern, South American, or any other race said "I am proud of being _________." Kids in public schools are allowed to call white kids crackers, but if a white kid utters a racist name, they get detention and a write up, and everything. If anything, society has been racist to white people. |: |
We learn 3 years of Us history in my school. Last year was world history, but even when you said they told us the bad things that happened, it's true. You cannot deny the horrible things our ancestor did to other races. We don't need a white history month because other races would see us as racist, or white supremacists. I know they all have their months, but they had to deal with their ancestors getting punished by our people. I know it doesn't seem right in anyway, but I don't want to stir up any hatred of us. Since we were kids we were taught about our Caucasian culture. Besides, all of our achievements haven't been forgotten. We live in a very imbalanced society.
|
If you go with that logic, Spufflez, you might as well say those races did nothing wrong. Wite races were not the only races that killed others, enslaved them, or had wars. Every race did, but you never hear about this in history classes, ever.

I feel this way about people who come in and ask where we keep our black literature. (I work in a book store).
Well, first of, we don't have a specific African American section to the bookstore. People get upset about this, and all I have to say is: "You fought to no longer be segregated. Why do you want your books to be segregated?" I don't think that there should be a white history month. I think that there should no longer be a black history side. White and black history should be taught side by side as equals. By seperating it out, we're marking it as different. Special. Not fit to be in the usual curriculum. A one month event. Every month should be black history month just as every month is already white history month. |
They actually do but we don't refer to it as White History month. We refer to those days by the heritage not directly called "white".
There is really no such thing as white or black. The only direct reason we call it Black History Month is do to the relation that not everyone is African American and we tend to associate way to much with the term Black as a people. In fact I hate when they use it but the association is clear. Mainly saying anything like White History Month is not good. The term "White" in almost anything tends to be direct with racial conflict. Even though I understand were this is coming from having a White History Month is kind of pointless. Most of our history especially in America is devoted to White History and not much is indulged into anything other then White Men. In fact I don't see the need in it. I really wish we didn't have to go as low as to creating months, days and even weeks devoted to a particular group of people or anything of that nature. I just wish we would be able to study any history at any time without needing months. But this is all do to ignorance that our ancestors had in the past. |
well i think that there should be no months that seperately diverts attention or celebration towards one race. In doing so, segregation actually takes another place, by segregating that one race from the others in that one celebration or commemoration. Its because of these months or weeks or even days that hold the appreciation towards one race that create certain thoughts such as "why doesnt my race or ethnic group have a appreciation month". That leads to a train of thought that my even be considered discriminatory. Such related topics involve "BET", a channel named for the race made the channel, the shows on the channel, and the people that watch the channel. But the simple name of "BET" does not mean that any other race cant watch it either, there is no obligation to watch "BET", "telefutura", or any other channels. Just as there is no obligation to celebrate any of the "apreciation" months. Just leave it be as it is, do not ask for more, because it is just asking for trouble....that will be all

I think that there should be no special months for any race. Because that is like making that specific race special and make them get more attention. Sure, African Americans went through a whole lot of crap to get them where they are now. Sure, some are still treated like crap, but Black History Month is giving them more attention. You know what? We shouldn't even be calling people "white" and "black". I hate using that term because it separates us. Why not just call everyone rainbow? xP
Not to mention, it's like putting African Americans in the back, and the Americans in the front, except it's the other way around. What if...We were blind? Then it wouldn't matter. Races are silly and determined by fate. If we're German, we're German. If we're British, we're British! It's like judging a book's cover before you read it. I hope that I do not offend anyone. :) |
ok firstly blacks have been put through more then whites. i'm a white don't get me wrong but i feel like whites haven't been ut through as much as blacks have and everything that went wrong with us was are fault but what happened to the blaks was are fault. so i guess to get a white day we need to do something to deserve it.

I don't think we need a white history month... why would we want to celebrate something so dull and depressing? Plus, I don't know about you, but all of my history classes were at least 75% about white history already...

Where is your logic? |: If I take world history, people will say it's all about "white" people, won't they? Well, white people are people, and are part of the world. If I was in an Asian History Class, do you think we'd learn about white people? No. We'd learn about yellow. (Sorry, but if I'm referring to myself and my heritage as a color, I'm going to refer ever person and every heritage as a color. I did not mean that derogatorily.) But do you think that an Asian History Class would still celebrate Asian and Southern Pacific month? Probably. But hey, they learn about Asian History every day they're there. So tell me, why does it matter what you celebrate. White cultures had a huge influence on the world, both good and bad. So why can't be celebrate the accomplishments that we've done? |

So, you take a class a world history class, you learn about world history. Congrats. Most history classes through out high school are geared at white culture, aside from a world history class. Examples, well try noticing who store people will follow around, the black man or the white man in a store. Or even the hispanic or the white man. I can tell you, even with all three dressed nicely and consevertly, the white man will not be followed around. Those who are white tend to be trusted more, liked, and have certain unsaid privileges, that you as a white person do not realize. Oh, and I have seen white people pronuonce there pride with out getting attacked. But then it was not a flat out "White Pride" but a "Irish/Wlesh/Swiss/German/French and so fourth Pride" Many are excepting of a pride in nationality as such, most are not of a blanket white pride. Even with any the Black/Hispanic/Asain/Native areas, they get smaller with the group they have pride for. Mexican pride, Chinese Pride, Navajo Pride, and so fourth. Even blanket statements theres are not so right. And rappers all you have to list? You realize Rock-n-roll started as black music, right? Slowly, many white rappers are being except, just as it happened with Rock-n-Roll. And this society has not become racist towards white people. Look at who is still in power. Name me 5 black politicians, and hispanic, and asain. It was just last major elections that the first Asain governor was elected. White still make more money than miniorties. They still get the better pick of housing, there still is housing discrimanation against those of "colour". Whites are not the ones being spit upon. |
I LOVE the way you quoted that to make easy to read. xP

why do we need a white history month??? we dont really since our history text books represents our white history plenty well...unlike the histories of native americans, african americans, and hispanics...those i believe deserve a month devoted to their history because the books dont even come close to telling us their history...we see white history all throughout the year..what about columbus day?? and crap like that...i feel there is no need for white history month or even famous guys in history month...but i do think we should have more minority history months so we can actually learn about what our history texts books didnt tell us about...you should really read a book called: The Lies my teacher told me...i recommend to everyone...

"You can take Japanese History, African history, African American history, Indian history...Just because some cultures are mainly white, don't mean all of them are."
Well here is where you are wrong on that one..not every school system is like the one you grew up with...not everyone has the opportunity to take such classes and learn about such histories..one of the reasons im agains standardized testing when our schools are not standardized themselves..not everyone has the same advantages in life..its evident..thats what we still have classes in our economy system..and there is racism in the world..and im not talking about personal prejudice..im talking about power..thats what true racism is..when the power system is not completely a fair system and discriminates...we still have a lot of issues... |
