We should have a White History month!
Why isn't there a White History Month? There is a Black History Month, Hispanic Culture month and a bunch of weeks and days devoted to certain cultures. But why, in a country where we value equality, is there no White History Month?
When I have asked before, I have gotten such answers as "Every day is White History Month," "We don't deserve it," and "There is no such thing as White culture, it is too varied." So my answers to that have been always looked down upon. As for every day being white history month, what are we reminded of when we look at White history? Let's give an example of my History class. This year we have learned about Africa, Latin America and India, among other things. When we learned about White People in those place, we went into and royally fucked everything up and ruined everything. Now my school has a Western history and American history so I am not attacking the class specifically. What I am saying, is that I have learned what terrible things white people have have done, but rarely of what bad things other races have done. We celebrate what great things Black people and Hispanics have done, but why not the white man? We have brought you many things such as: Chicken Pox Vaccine The Printing Press The Computer The Television The Phone The Post-Office So, is the White man still not worth celebrating? Also, if you are learning about your country's history and it happens to have whites being a big part of it, it isn't WHITE HISTORY. It is only WHITE HISTORY, if you focus only on WHITES ON PURPOSE, like Black History Month does. As for we don't deserve it, we do deserve it. Maybe those who went into to Africa to steal people for slaves or those involved in the Amritsar Massacre in India don't, but we didn't do those actions, even if our ancestors are related to them. As for there being no White culture, maybe there isn't. But if there is no white culture, there is no Black Culture. If you disagree, I ask you to provide me something that they all have in common other than appearances. But White's still have history, mixed with good and bad. However, everyone feels so guilty for all the bad, e.g. slavery, giving small pox blankets to the natives, that we forget the good we have done. If other races get a month, in a country founded on equality, why shouldn't we? Perhaps making a White History month would raise White Pride. I am not talking about the KKK or Nazi kind of White Pride, I am talking about having a little pride in your race. When people say Black Pride, it is looked upon as a good thing because they are being proud of who they are. When people say White Pride, it conjures up, not images of great past White people, but people in the South wearing a KKK outfit. I believe it was last year, but on one season of Survivor, they created some controversy. The producers divided the teams based on race. It would have been no different than dividing them on hair or eye color, but it still caused much controversy. I remember Hispanic people rooting for the Hispanic team, the black people rooting for the black team, but the white people were awkwardly silent. Most of them were too afraid of appearing racist by wanting a white team to win. But is giving these minorities a month actually belittling them? Think about it. When one refers to Abraham Lincoln, he is a "great AMERICAN president." Now, when one refers to George Washington Carver, he is a "great AFRICAN-AMERICAN scientist." Why not just a great scientist? Do we feel the need to specifically pick out there race and since they aren't the majority, we point them out, give them a pat on the head and treat? And this bring me to my next point... The White race has done so much for society, and it doesn't have a month. By giving the other minorities are we somehow proclaiming ourselves on top saying ""We are so great, we don't need a month." On the Television, I saw an ad for a "Black Adoption Agency." I wondered something. Would people be offended if it was a "white adoption agency" which only had white kids? My guess would probably be a "yes" because a lot of white people are afraid of being racist. What I think should happen is one of the following: I think we should make a White History month to celebrate all the great white people there have been over the years. -or- I think we should abolish all celebratory months because in a country where we believe in equality and establish an appreciation month for everyone or maybe for proffessions. So, to discuss: Should there be a white history month? Should we get rid of all those months? Why are white people so damn afraid of being racist? Or anything else you find controversial in my post. |
Simply because the history we learn is WHITE history.
Really think about it, if you so care. The majority of those you focus on while learnign through out school is of White History, White Cultural and white everything. We have the spereate months, because with out is, that history would be getting passed up, while no matter what, we will always learn about white history. As you pointed out the "white Race" has done so much for society, that it is celebrated damn near every day. Our society it's self is not in a state that it can be rid of things such as Black History Month or Hispanic History month. We are not any where near coloured blind, or away from race mattering. Race still matters, and you still get more pluses being a White Middle Class male in this society. Please, look at television, look at see how many of the major shows feature a mostly white cast, with most miniorities being stereotyped. Look at music, look at your own school. White history and cultural is celebrated damn near every day and shown as the good cultural, while we have to give attention to the others just so we know they actually exist and are there. The other problem is going in general as White History/Cultural. Many see that as an all in compassing hate of other races. While if you change that to something as Irish/German/English/Norwegian/Swiss and so fourth pride, your taking pride in what that cultural speffically build versus's saying that all "white" did is awesome and wonderful and makes us better. |
On a slightly similar note, why do we devote a whole month to black history but only one day to our Earth (Earth Day)?
|
To be honest, I'm sick of white history. :?
If I never learn anything more about white history, the better. (I am the whitest white person ever) XD;; |
For one, there is no such thing as the "white race".
There is a German race. There is an Italian race. There is a Russian race, an English race, and a Polish race. But no white race. Caucasians come from such a diversified background that lumping them all together is actually ignoring their history, not celebrating it. And yes - I hold a very similar stand about 'black' history. While many cannot trace their backgrounds due to slavery, there are just as many others who can associate themselves with a particular country or even city. It makes more sense for them to think of themselves as Ethiopian or Algerian instead of just African. In my mind, Black history month is more in celebration of those who don't know where they came from, to give a sense of unity and intimacy. |
Well. I learned about the printing press in English and SOSE. I learned anout other things on your list in science class. I leanred most of the things on your list through day to day life, though childrens television will tell kids all about the post office.
When you learn in history that white people colonized and invaded other peoples, that is white history. You're upset because you only learn the bad things that the white race does? That can't be true, how do you funcion in day to day life without having heard of anything good done by white people. You'd have to live under a rock not to have heard of the things on your little list there. It is white history when we learn Edison invented the telephone, as it is white history when we learn about Madame Curie. When you learn about the people of Rome, that's white history too. Ever learned about the vikings? Guess what? White history! Black History Month exists because without it, thewre wasn't much in the way of black history being taught, on purpose or not. If you learn about white history everyday then guess what bucko, you don't need to purposely focus on it. You say white history is only white history if you focus on it specifically, I say that 'insert minority history' month exists because if it didn't, there would be no focus on it at all. White history is white history no matter how you come to be focusing on it. Also, you say that perhaps the people who invaded other countries don't deserve the white history, but the rest of you do. Well... white people still get benefits n society today. White people still benefit from the riches gained from their parents, that will include slavetrading parents or not. So where do we draw the line, do we draw it off which families never had anything to do with the oppression of black people? If you had a single family member down the line who didn't like the idea of black people voting, then that's you too. White people don't need a month. They don't need a month, because they have it all year round. It doesn't matter if the month is specifically designated to them or not. As long as you're learning it, you're learning it after all. |
And what about Chinese history month?
|
White-History month is too far fetched mainly because, as said before in this debate, that history is primarily that of the "white" man, as our nation was born and as it grew.
There really is no point of making a month for white people, to celebrate it's history because every time you open a text-book, you more or less do so. As in why white people would be so damn afraid to be racist, I'm uncertain. Blacks do have slavery and oppression, however, no living black today was ever oppressed as their ancestors were, ect. As for whites not being a race, I believe every time I fill in the bubble on state-tests, I fill in the [Caucasian] bubble. I believe that's a race. xD |
Are you, like... Gone in the head? A white history month? for people who claimed themself the perfect race and used blacks as their slaves? I was born in south africa, a white boy, we had a black servant of our own, but she was like family to me, I hate racists and I hate white vs black, the last thing we need is a white history month after all the pain we've cause the black people. My brother in law is a black man too, and screw in law, that man is my brother, the black race deserve things like that as way for use to try and be forgiven. Unfortunately there can be some black people who are more racist than whites, but we definitely do not need a white history month, we have friggin millenia behind our back published the shit out of itself.

You know what we really need? a Cheesecake Appreciation day!! xD

how about no race months at all. It is pretty stupid to begin with.
If you are going to talk about history, you should talk about it all together, for it is easier to understand it that way. That is why I liked my AP World History class because it combined all the different regions in parts of the book and said how things were pretty straightforward. |

I do not think we should have a white history month, however, i do not think we should have any months, weeks, or days to celebrate a specific race.
I have never objected to Martin Luther King Jr's birthday celebration because we are celebrating the birth of a great historical figure in the US, but I do object to Black History Month, because it does stand for inequality in a country that so prides itself on the equality of it's people. There is one thing that I discovered while growing up, blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, we were all equal. The reason for this? I grew up in a military family with men, women, and children who were all part of our great country's armed services. There was no discrimination there, I never once witnessed it. Some of my best friends growing up were black. I didn't see any difference between my black, hispanic, asian, or white friends When I finally grew up and moved out on my own, that's when I first experienced discrimination between the races. It actually shocked me, because I thought our country had grown beyond that, but apparently that wasn't the case. Moving to the eastern part of the US, I've experienced it even more. Though many of the black men I've seen here are with white women, I see more discrimination against whites from the blacks here and also I see more discrimination from the whites towards the blacks here. I don't even see hispanic person's in our area, and the only asian's I've seen are doctors. This doesn't mean they don't exist here, just means there aren't so many here. It saddens my heart deeply to see so much discrimination that still goes on in our great country. How much more ideal our country would be if the people of today could be like those whom I experienced growing up in a military family. |
Personally, and this is just my opinion I'm sick of getting attacked for it but you're going to hear it anyway, I don't think we should have anything to celebrate anyone particular race. I think it just keeps showing the differences in us and keeps saying 'hey we're different, race matters' then we turn around and get told that race doesn't matter everyone should be treated equally.
I learned about all sorts of different stuff in my history class, I know about it. Teachers have to cram a lot of stuff into a semister, but if you're going to stop and take a day to talk about a specific race, what's the difference in just putting it on the timeline and teaching it in the class dealing with the period they happen to be taking about? That's just what I think, and I learned that I'm not the only one, there's groups out there created by black activists that feel the same way for the same reason. It just keeps pointing out that we're different and bringing race to attention. |
Conversly, there are black activist groups that are sick of people saying "Lets not look at race, we should all be equal, and race shouldn't matter!" because it means people start ignoring the very real problems regarding racism that people of colour are still having to deal with.
|
I think that we shouldn't have ANY month for any minority OR majority. People complain about how they're a minority, and yet they put themselves in the position for it.
"I'm a minority, so lets have a month/week/whatever proclaiming that I'm a minority!" It's just stupid in my opinion. Oh, and to make clear, I'm a "minority". |

In addition, I experienced a situation in my work place where they represented a woman who filed a lawsuit against the workplace for a comment made by another coworker who was known by all to have a history of mental instability. The coworker had made a comment about a specific client, but the woman who filed the lawsuit had taken the comment "personally" even though it was not directed at her in any way shape or form. The supervisor of the coworker had to take certain steps in going to her superiors regarding the comment that had been made, because of the delicacy of the situation being that the coworker was mentally disabled, but she was indeed taking action. It was not your normal everyday situation, that could be handled quickly and efficiently. The woman who filed the lawsuit, won her case because the workplace had "not taken steps to rectify the manner, in a timely fashion", despite the fact that the supervisor's hands were tied in having to deal with the delicacy of the situation. Everyone at work felt the woman did not deserve to win, even the other coworkers who were black. I felt this was a case that was decided unjustly in favor of someone who'd cried out "discrimination" though the entire situation did not warrant it. I do not object to the existence of agencies such as the NAACP, but I still object to our country having a month set aside to celebrate Black History Month, as I reiterate again, it draws attention to an inequality in our country that so prides itself upon the equality of it's people. I think if I were black, I would actually find it to be offensive, because then I would feel the country I reside in is still saying we are not equal to the other races of our country, because of the fact that it is representing an inequality where we are in truth, equal. |
I cannot comment on the personal situation beyond saying that if a man made a racist comment, and she was of that race, it shouldn't matter if he said it about her or not. If the guy was making fun of someone for being black (or whatever colour they were) he would have been by proxy saying that black people are worthy of insult because of their skin colour.
(i.e "He's a fucking nigger" might have been said to insult a black man named Joe, but the insult implies that being a nigger is a bad thing to be, so a different black man might find it offensive, and well, it would have been offensive.) If you don't fraw attention to inequalities that exist, then you ignore them. if you don't pay attention to inequalities, statistics for example which conclude that black women have a %33 higher chance of being raped in their lifetimes, then you're not going to be able to put in the education reforms, and rape crisis centres into the communities. If you don't highlight the real issues black people have had, and still have today, you don't recognize those issues, and you can't take steps to fix them. Everyone won't be equal if we just pretend that they are. |
Well if you started asking for a White History Month then I would ask for a Japanese History Month, a Hawaiian History Month, a Filipino History Month >__<. You see, if someone got their way and we had a White History Month then other races of people would ask "Well where's our history month, huh?". I'm part white =3. I'm also Japanese, Hawaiian, and Filipino. But when you think about, if you live in the United States, Black people had to go through a lot way back when. Derragatory terms are still used against them today such as 'nigga' and the same goes for other cultures. Like I've been called a 'jap' before. We all have to go through a lot no matter what our cultures are. I just think Black people generally went through a lot more suffering than the average white person back then.
But I live in Hawaii. Here, people actually get made fun of a lot for being white O-O. Oh how the tides have turned. That's like the main racist statement here in Hawaii. I'm surprised the people here haven't drove the tourism industry out of bussiness yet >__<. Anyways, I don't think we really need one. But that's just me =3 |
Well, there is Asian Pacific American month, it's May. It's mean to be a celebration for Asians and Pacific Islanders living in america, though I don't think it's a history month persay.
|
They have a Native American week. Though, I only just learned about it this year. I'm half Native American.
|
If you think about it, in general, when you think white people and their history the bad far outweighs the good. I'm not saying that white people shouldn't be proud of their accomplishments, but I don't think there should be a "White History Month".
I do however think that months for other races is a good idea. In today's society when we hear something about black people it's usually about crime. We never hear good things about black people. And when we could hear something good about a black person it turns into something negative. For example, when Barack Obama decided to run for president you didn't hear "Look at that! A smart, wonderful man running for president!". Instead you heard, "Didn't he do cocaine, he can't run for president. He's just like the rest of those black people. He'll ruin the country." That's why we need months to celebrate minorities, because it's the only time they get a good word in. And white people are afraid of sounding racist, but so are black people. Black people hear the words "You're racist" just as much as white people do when they praise their culture. I've seen it several times. At least white people don't have to walk around with the word "STUPID" stamped on their forehead as many blacks do. White people don't have to grow up with the idea that they're bad all the time. If black people were given a better public image then maybe they wouldn't have to rely on a special month to give them pride. I saw an episode of Oprah where five year old black kids had to choose which was the good doll between a black and white IDENTICAL doll. They all said that the white doll was good because of how white people are seen in society. How sad is that? |
