Laid off.
Today I was happily playing Menewsha when my father got home. He's 66 years old and has worked at the same place for 26 years. He was laid off today. When he got home my sister told me to go upstairs. I assumed I was not supposed to know something. Then I came down for some water and my sister was crying. My dad was laid off and he most likely wont be able to get a full time job. I don't know what to do. I have lived in a little bit of comfort my whole life. Now we're talking about getting rid of our DSL. I just am so confused and I don't know what to do.

Shouldn't he be retired by now anyway? What's the age for retirement in the US? It's 65 for men here, then they get a pension from the government. Won't your Dad get a redundancy payment, if he's been there for 26 years he should get a good chunk of cash for being laid off.

He should be retired but he didn't have an exactly "great" job. And the retirement age is 65 here. I don't know much of the details on pensions and stuff.

Aw that's terrible. Well maybe if you get a job (that is if you don't already have one) You can help him and maybe pay rent or something. Not that it's going to make a huge difference, I mean you might still have to get rid of your DSL but at least you will make it a little bit better. And your dad might feel better and less stressed because he sees your taking charge. Unless your too young, I forgot about the fact that I don't know you and you could be too young for a job. But if so, maybe your sister or someone else can. I hope this advice helps and it's not worthless like if your too young or already have a job. Another thing you should do is have a yard sale like every weekend and get rid of unwanted stuff. Kinda lame but I hope it helps C: And sorry about your dad.

He might be able to claim benefits from the government given his age. If you're within the US, he would of paid into Social Security all of his working career. It won't be an awesome payout, but it'll help. Also, given the financial situation, the government has extended unemployment benefits.
I take it you're young, by the fact you were asked to go upstairs. I think the best thing you can do is be there for your parents and try to help them as much as you can around the house to make things easier. Focus on doing well in school and trying to build yourself an education and preparing yourself for your future. Your parents will always be there for you, and I know they will do what they must to pull the family through tough times. I wish the best. |
i know how you fell, my dad was laid off aswell and so was my little sister so no one here works and its impossible to find work these days!

you could get rid of dsl and go to your public library and use the computers there. at this point its about making sacrifices and some of those can be tough but you really dont need the internet and there is other ways to get online. hang in there its not so bad

There is no government pension - if you didn't save for retirement with a 401k or have a job with a pension you're pretty much screwed - that's where social security comes in - it's there but barely enough to live on (It was originally created as an emergency backup - but too may people rely on that and don't plan ahead and save for retirement . .or just aren't able to) I'm so sorry for your family - and I cna understand how difficult things are going to be - but do what you can to be there and support each other and work on cutting out anything that isn't necessary. You can still visit Mene through your local library and friends houses . .but I think DSL is probably going to be the least of your worries. Best of luck  |
My dad's in danger of getting laid off too. ._.
We already have plans laid out for when he does. Good bye music lessons, good bye cable, good bye any luxury items, good buy brand name food. Hello me paying for my college classes and working more, probably full time. Having a budget will help you guys while you get things figured out. As everyone said, with his age he should be able to get social security benefits or something from the government. But his age also works against him because if he cant' get that, people hardly ever want to hire older gentlemen. >_< It'd a terrible fact, but true. There's always jobs out there somewhere, though. I'm sorry to hear all this. I hope everything works out for you. |
Go get a job yourself? o_O
I'm glad i still have everything including lots of money. |
You're old enough to get a job, aren't you? If you started working, it would probably take a lot of the pressure off.

I know how you feel I was laid off many of times due to cut backs and other stuff as well, you ask your dad to go the unemployment office where you live to see if he can get unemployment benefits that might help you out for a while and see if you can get food stamps as well.
That's what I did and it helped me get by paying the bills and get some food for awhile until I find a new job which is hard to find where I live trust me. |
