Japanese Akita Or Chihauhau?
I would buy a Japanese Akita. But my brother disagrees with me and he wants a chihauhau. So we made a deal that out of 30 replys the dog most recomended we would buy. My dad says we should get a gaurd dog because people have tried breaking into our house 2 times.
So Which Dog Would You Recomend? Japanese Akita Or Chihauhau?;) PS. Our dads not letting us get both. |
If it were up to me i'd say... No dog. :]
Spend the money on yourself ;]! |
You mean chihuahua?. If you have the lifestyle and space for both dogs, then I guess it's a personal preference issue.
Otherwise you could research them and see which is better suited for your lifestyle and situation. Like in my case, I know a small dog would be the clear choice because I don't have space for a larger dog to be happy and get normal exercise. |
it's more important to chose based on the dog itself, not the breed. Also, adopt him/her, don't buy from a breeder or puppymill.
|
That depends on where you live. If you live in an apartment, a chihuahua might be best. If you live somewhere with a huge backyard, an akita would be a better option. Depends on what you guys want to do. I would go with the akita, but that's because I love those dogs. Don't get me wrong, I love chihuahuas too, but I prefer akitas.

Akita all the way. Chihauhau's are yappy little things, I'd know we used to have one.
|
Akita! ...I personally don't like chihuahuas. They're too small and nervous for me. I'd be afraid that I'd break them on accident or something.
|
I had to google it, because I had NO idea what a Japanese Akita looked like. I knew Akita, but didn't know there were other kinds. However, I do own a long haired Chihuahua mix. Now that we've established my (lack of) expertise, here's my two cents. The prettier one is the Japanese Akita, hands down. BUT-I don't know what your family composition is, and you HAVE to take that into consideration. For example, if you have young children, don't get a dog who will likely mistake them for chew toys. But if its just you two and your dad, I'd say the Akita.

I would go with the Japaneese Akita ... i live around too many chihauhau's... i get annoyed by them DX |
I've moved this thread to Life Issues, since it's asking more for help than for discussion.
And, I would recommend the Akita, since you want a guard dog. A chihuahua's not going to protect you from much. |
Personally, I'm a cat person but I pick the akita because Chihuahuas are annoying and if they have short fur, they don't look that appealing.. Plus you could easily step on them and hurt them. That's why I have a rottweiler (spelling??)

You might want to look at several dogs first. And base this on the dogs you find. I've know high and low energy of both breeds, and it's all a matter of what kind of energy your home has, and how much time you can dedicate to your dog. Also the layout of your home. Do you have lots of breakables that a large dog may get into trouble with? What size is your backyard? Is your entire family willing to take care of the dog no matter which one you get?
Chihuahuas are actually very sweet dogs, if you buy the right ones. I loved going to my grandma's house to play with Poco. Chihuahua's are actually very territorial dogs. They hate it when someone they don't know is in their house, unless you've given them a sign that the person is trusted. Chihuahua's also bark, a lot. And a lot, and a lot! Also if someone to break in, If a chihuahua bits them, they will not be able to pry that dogs teeth out of their arm without help. Tiny but Mighty, chihuahua's are great gaurd dogs. But from personal standpoint, I like Akita's better, simply because I like furry dogs.Akita's have the size and visual menace that the chihuahua lacks. With a bigger body comes a deeper bark that may back off would be intruders. But if not trained properly to be a gaurd dog Akita's are very friendly dogs, and may be more inclined to ask for belly rubs then to attack intuders. Your choice. Good luck! |
You should try a humane society and see what dogs they have available. Maybe you'll both agree on which dog to get once you see/interact with a specific one. They'll probably mostly have mutts at the animal shelter, but some of them will at least have enough of a particular breed to look like it. Myself, I like mutts, they're good dogs and generally have less health issues.

Never heard of a chihuahua as a guard dog...They do seem awfully delicate, which is why they are not recommended for small children.

I don't like Chihuahuas... o_O
There are a lot of cute small dogs as well, but not this one... x_x I personally love the Chiba Inu and have totally fallen in love with the Akita Inu when I looked it up - but that's, of course, because they are japanese dogs and I'm Japan-addicted! xDD I would go to some animal shelter and get one of those poor dogs... they all want some pretty home where they get loved... and you can easily say how their personality is like... that's a good thing if you're searching for some family-dog... ^^ [EDIT] Did you know that there was one really famous Akita Inu named Hachiko? He got famous because of his loyality. He used to meet hin owner at the train station, but then he died and Hachiko came day for day to this station waiting for his owner... There's even a movie out there! - Oh, maybe that's because you want an Akita Inu? o_O" Well... for me reason enough to get a Akita Inu, a loyal dog and not such a annoying little Chihuahua-rat... ^^" |
My hubby and I plan on getting an Akita as soon as we have the space.
Definitely go to a respectable breeder, whatever your choice; do tons of research on the seller. The reason to buy a particular breed is for the temperament. Akitas can be *very* dangerous if not properly socialized from birth; similarly, Chihuahuas can be *very* problematic if not well trained. Because they're so different, you should research the two breeds' requirements. |
I can't honestly decided. I hated Chihuahuas till one of th epeople I live with got one. Noow I love that little dog to bits. Yes she's yappy but most dogs are.
|
I would have to go with the Japanese Akita, but I may be biased about that since I'm not really a fan of small dogs. They tend to be very... I mean really loud and yappy. But I suppose Chihuahuas are easier on maintenence. Whatever floats your boat. Good luck!
