Have you ever locked yourself out of your apartment?

I just did and what is worse I don't have a jacket or shoes on and it's really cold outside. So my questions is have you ever been locked out of your home? I still can't believe I did that. What did you do to get back in? Got any suggestions for for when I might do it the next time?

Eastriel 09-08-2009 05:19 PM

Always have you key on you? xD
Or keep a spare key some where, where you only know where it is, like under a plant pot or something?

Vickicat 09-08-2009 10:05 PM

Locked out.

I got locked out of my house once. I can't remember how it even happened now. I think it was when I was in high school and I forgot to take my key to school with me or something. It sucked. x_x I was stuck outside for at least an hour. And it's always hot here. At least now that I have a car I can't forget my keys since the house key and car keys are on the same keychain.

Lacquer 09-08-2009 10:55 PM

Heh. I can't count the times I've accidently locked myself outta my house. Even as a latch-key kid, I used to do it. >_>; Thank god I knew which window was loose so I could get back in, or some other method to get in. I've gotten better at not locking myself outta the house. Now I just lock myself out of the car. Usually when it's raining and the cellphone is right next to the keys, heh.

Once I was locked out of the house when I was in fourth grade and I was like, "$!T3"
And I climbed into a tiny window and hurt myself, but then I remembered that my brother was inside the house already...

Yeah, plenty of times!

I go to a neighbor that you trust and ask if you can use a phone and yellowpages. Find a locksmith and have them help you out (or in, as the situation happens to be!)

Earlier this week, an odd thing happened. The main lock on my sliding patio door stopped latching. It was probably the result of the house settling or maybe the wood shifting around now that we're finally getting some seasonal rain. Either way, it was rather annoying and had been bothering me all week.

This afternoon I got out the tools and decided to fix it. I needed to move the metal receiver that the latch grabs onto so that it'd actually latch again. While I thought that would entail drilling into the metal frame, it turned out that I was able to reuse a previous set of holes (apparently this has happened before) and get by with a little bit of Dremel work.

No problem, right?

Everything was fine until about an hour ago. I had cleaned out my closet and was taking bags of clothes into the garage so that I might drop them off at Goodwill this week. On may way out the door, I gave it a bit of a push and it slid as usual before stopping in the closed position.

You can see where this is going, right?

Well, the funny thing is that just as the door was closing, I thought to myself "that'd be funny if the door locked behind me... you know, because I fixed the lock soooo well..."

Sure enough, when I came back to the door and gave it a tug it wouldn't move. At all. And, of course, it was raining outside. So there I was, locked out of my own house. It was at that moment I decided that I really ought to keep a spare key hidden in the garage.

Anyway, I wandered back into the garage, grabbed a few tools and began to take the lock apart from the outside. Much to my surprise, it was relatively easy to take apart and I was back inside in no more than three minutes.

Happy with my quick recovery, I stored a spare key in the garage, put the lock back together, and began to ponder getting better locks. If I can get in without trying very hard, there's not much to stop a determined person. (Not that I wasn't determined, but you know what I mean.)

Oh lordy, I'm notorious for locking my keys inside, both my car and my house. Several times I've had to call people to come pick me up from across town so I can go get a spare key, and once I even locked all 4 of my spares in my car @[email protected]

I'm even worse with my house. I took a shower early one morning and I stepped out back to let my dog out while I was just wearing a towel, and forgot to unlock the door behind me. So I ended up walking around the house almost naked until I finally found a loose basement window. I knocked it open and proceeded to try and clime through. Now it's not one of those big, nice windows that easy to get through, no, it's one of the tiny, 1 1/2 feet tall windows that are right at the very ceiling. So not only do I have to somehow squeeze through this, but I have to do it while I'm dangling 8 feet off the ground and naked. But, I managed to get back inside all safe and sound, and with a horribly bruised ego.

lightkanna 09-22-2009 01:49 AM

I haven't done that yet. I know I don't have a spare key to come home when my parents are gone. Though my friend grandpa will know I am locked out and I will get to stay at my friend house if it happen. Like this one time my whole family left to go to Wal-mart and I was locked out and so I just stayed at my friends house. ^^ It was nice because her house is awesome to hang out. xD
Though if you ever get locked out why not call your landlord? I bet they have a spare key. XD

Mihoshi05 09-23-2009 05:39 PM

I have. I'm glad mine is on the first floor and the kitchen window was unlocked.

Sagitar 09-24-2009 08:04 PM

yes, in the middle of the winter, without any outerwear.. D: I didn't even have my cell phone with me!
none of the neighbours were home, and even if they were I didn't know any of them... >.>

I was out 8 hours ^^; it was quite freezing.
all I could do was go inside a carage and try to keep myself warm inside a car.
(ofcourse there were no car keys either..).

Hresvelgr 09-24-2009 08:27 PM

All the time. It is not that i forget my key, more so, I just do not grab it. Bad habit. But yeah, I usually get in through a window if my sister is being too much of a stuck up %$&#@ to let me in. We live in a old house, so it is pretty easy to get in.

Lady Luck Infinity 09-24-2009 09:48 PM

I always used to lock myself out of my parents house, now that I've moved out I'm better about keeping keys with me. Luckily my parents keep a key in a secret place for my brothers when they forget. I think one's lost like 3 sets of keys.

mad hatter's tea party 09-27-2009 01:27 PM

I got locked out of my block the other day because I left my key card in my room, but luckily as there is always lots of people going in and out, I was able to get back in without too much trouble =].

I was going out anyway, and it was sunny, so that was alright. If I'd been stuck for long I would have knocked on the downstairs windows, as I'm friends with people who live in them =]

Kayannara 09-27-2009 10:27 PM

Lol, I always manage to leave my window or something unlocked, just to be safe, or if there's a small space under the door, I tape an extra key under it where no one can see but I can get with my fingernail if it's needed....True, it might hurt like hell if you have weak nails (I do) to try and scrape the key off but it's worth it to get inside and warm! As for the window thing....well, leave it a tiny bit open and then if you get locked out, you can just crawl (or shimmy) yourself inside! I have alot of other ideas too....I seem to be a chronic locks-self-out-of-the-house-er!=3:sweat:

Yaleni 09-28-2009 04:02 AM

I've locked myself out of the house a couple of times. The one time I didn't have anywhere to go and no one was going to be home for hours, so I managed to get one of our basement windows open and stuffed myself through it. We had tiny, tiny windows. It hurt.

To make matters worse, a couple was walking by as I was stuffing my backpack in the window and I could hear the woman giggling about the last time SHE had to break into her own house. It was a little embarassing, to say the least.

Alexial_Rose 10-01-2009 07:22 AM

I used to lock myself out of the house because I would forget my keys when I left for school. I'd come back and I would have to climb up onto the roof over the kitchen and crawl through the window in my room. But first I would try climbing through the tiny window in the laundry room. Never any fun. But if I couldn't get in cause the windows were all locked I would just lay on the trampoline till my parents got home.

scholar 10-01-2009 03:20 PM

When I was a kid, I always had to wait for my parents to come home. Embarrassing!

As a college student in my own apartment, I never locked myself out, but a friend closed my door and locked me out once -- fortunately he hadn't driven away and I was able to get him to take me, barefoot and all, over to my landlords' place to ask them for a spare key. Worst case scenario I'd've been able to walk there, as they lived only a few miles from me and it was a breezy summer afternoon.

I assume as this thread was started awhile ago, that you got back in!

Erailea 10-01-2009 03:23 PM

No, thankfully I've never done that. I've locked myself out of my dorm room before, but thankfully in an apartment style dorm, so I had three roomies would could let me into the apartment in case of an issue. Then I'd just need to call security to open my room XP It's annoying, but live and learn. Everyone has to lock themselves out of their home/car at least once in their life

other than that, in High School I forgot my keys several times at home when I left. So I guess that could be called locking yourself out. I just never saw the point of carrying keys in High school, I didn't have a car and I hated having them jingle on me back then

KiwiRose 10-05-2009 11:08 PM

I got locked out of my dorm room once... wearing nothing but a towel, shivering in the hallway. (That floor has a shared bathroom/shower). Thankfully someone came upstairs and saw me, and went to get one of the officers to unlock my room, and I didn't have to go dowstairs in a towel.

Another time, I was locked out of my house and had to climb in through the kitchen window... almost broke the coffee pot while I was at it. Whoops. :sarcasm:

I once locked myself and my six year old sister out of our house for over three hours in the middle of August. :gonk:
The front door had a chain on it to prevent our four year old brother from running outside, and my sister wanted to go by the back door to get her bicycle out of the garage. I agreed and the moment I closed the door behind me I remembered the chain and that I only had the key to the front door.
I had a mini panic attack, but didn't want my sister to start worrying, so I acted calm until we got to the park (across the street) and she started riding around on her bike. I immediately called my dad, who didn't pick up until a half hour later, and told him about the problem. He was at work and couldn't come, so he called my stepmom, but she couldn't come home until five (it was about noon).
Our grandfather was supposed to come later that night, so my dad called him to see if he had the keys to the back door and could come over early. He said he did, so my sister and I were at the park for another half hour. Keep in mind it was 80 degrees out and we didn't have any water or snacks. And our house was three feet away.
When my grandpa finally came (which took an extra half hour for some reason), he only had the keys to the front door, so we searched the garage for the extra keys. There were two keys there, but they were the same for one of the two side door locks. We sat in his car for some more time, waiting for five o'clock (and it was about two or three by this time).
I eventually asked him if we could go get something to eat in town since we were both sweaty, hungry, and very thirsty. After we ate and came back, my stepmom had finally come home and unlocked the side door.

Aidansidhe 10-06-2009 12:50 AM

That's my genius ninja skill: locking myself out of places.

One time I "sorta" locked myself out of my apartment when I was going to get something to eat. I was wearing pajama pants, a sweater, and fuzzy house slippers. It was about 45 degrees outside and it was 11:30 p.m. It wasn't really my fault though because we'd been having trouble with the lock. When it got really cold, some of the parts inside didn't want to work...It took me 30 minutes to get inside, and the next day, I had to call our landlord to fix it.

Another time, I was taking out the garbage at work and forgot to take my keys out of the door. We have to take it out the back, and when the back door closes, you can only open it from the inside. It was prior to opening so the front door was locked too. I had to call my boss to come open the store, but I had to wait a while because she was at the dentist's office. The only other person who had a key was in class at the college 30 minutes away. Not the best way to start the day! LOL

Missy192 10-06-2009 02:46 AM

@ Eastriel: the whole, spare key under a plant pot is so eighties. Spare key under ANYTHING is ancient. You don't want to hide a spare key outside.. under something.. where people can find it..

This guy I used to babysit for would have his spare key ALL the way in the back yard hidden in a drawer of an old desk that was rotting away back there. Sure his land was over three lots and it was quite a walk just to get the key but it was probably the best hiding place ever, i would have never guessed. What I do though is I always have my car keys on me. and a spare house key in the car glove compartment. I don't know why but I'm just unable to leave without my car keys.. Another thing you could do is keep a spare in a coat or sweater pocket that you always wear. So if you were to just quickly put that on when you go out to take the dog potty or whatever you do, you will have something on you. =)

lollipoplamia 10-06-2009 03:21 PM

Yes, I have! Fortunately, (or perhaps, not so fortunately, depending on the situation) we leave a window unlocked and it's ridiculously easy to break into.

Kole_Locke 10-06-2009 05:42 PM

I have and it really sucked. I did it back when I lived at another place. Now where I live you actually have to use a key to lock it which makes it impossible to lock yourself out. It's a pain to have to use my key to lock it but I don't mind that much because I know I will never have to be locked out ever again. I did lock my keys in my car one morning and consequently missed my first class. It took me an hour to figure out how I was going to get them out of my car. I was so frustrated! I had to find different items and luckily there were resources in the area that allowed me to find what I needed and others helped me too.
