The one thing I can tell you about the breaks - get used to it. Fast food for anything is crazy. Your feet will die. I work at Taco Bell and I have for a long time now...and sometimes I have 10-12 hour shifts with no break. I know...it's crazy. But then I think about how I need the money for school...so there isn't much I can do about it. Get comfort sole inserts or something for your shoes. There aren't a lot of laws about breaks for people who are legal. Those who are underage (16 and 17 years old) have to take breaks, at least in my state. But those above age don't get those laws. It depends on the company.

Also, the jerk with the half-drunk latte who wanted a refund? That will happen a lot too. I had some guy ask for a refund for his fruitista freeze when there was about 1/4 left of it because it "tasted funny and not like he imagined it would" so my manager had to give him a refund because he started raising holy hell in the middle of the restaurant.

People who come to fast food are, many times, rude. It sucks. But you'll get used to it. as well as incompetent coworkers.

When I first joined Taco Bell under my first manager...I would work the day shirts. and he would always make me do drive through. (I hate drive through btw...I prefer to actually make the food). I would be scheduled until 4 or 5pm. What sucked is that he would then schedule the night people to come in at 5:30 or 6. So then he would be like "you have to stay until they get here." and THEN the jerks would show up 30minutes-1.5 hours LATE for their shift. So if I was scheduled from 10-5 that day, I'd be there, sometimes, until 8 at night. Because after they got there, they'd have to wait until no one was ordering in the drive though and then count my draw before I could leave. Luckily I got a new manager that would always let me be on the line making food...which was logical because I was the fastest food maker in the entire store...so I don't know why my old manager insisted I be on drive through every day.XDD

Sorry for all the anecdotes! good luck!

I know that I will be on my feet, which is something that I knew way before I even applied to the job. I worked retail before, and there were times where I would be standing up or kneeling down (I folded clothes) for a few hours before I even got a break.

Problem is, I couldn't even take a break (or a lunch) if I wanted to. If I do, it's usually because one of the co-workers offered to watch over for me so I can get something to eat, etc. That, and my job is scheduling me a lunch break. While I am working for five hours, I am only being paid for four and a half hours.

Be happy that you got any kind of training, I guess. I work at Kohls, and the one I'm at basically threw me out there after going through a couple CBTs (computer-based training) and told me to have fun. xD

But honestly, I'd quit. That's ridiculous. Do they not care about employees?

I'm glad I got training, but I'm annoyed now that I'm being told that I'm doing things wrong, etc. It's not my fault that I wasn't told the "right" way. It is hard to say if I was taught wrong, or if the people there do it differently.

Understood on needing the money to move out and start paying rent - but let me tell you, you're not gonna get that at Safeway if it's anything like my experience. I started off at minimum wage, and then there were so many deductions (union dues, etc.) that I was eventually making roughly $5.50 an hour - minimum wage over here in California is $8.00/hour.

Again, my advice to you is to start looking for a different job now - save yourself the time and trouble later. From my experience with Safeway, it's probably not going to get better, no matter what you do - believe me, I tried damn near everything. e__e; They are...not a good company to work for; some stores are better than others...but most are pretty bad, and it sounds like you got one of the bottom of the barrel.

Whatever happens, I hope everything works out for you.

Luckily, I'll be living at my friend's brother's place where all I have to contribute to is foo. =| Basically, I pay for food and maybe a little extra if his brother needs money for cable, rent, etc. Plus, he has two other people (his girlfriend, my boyfriend) who will be moving in next month. I don't need a high paying job, just enough to buy me food.

Minimum wage here is over $7. I want to say $7.50 because that's what I got at my last job. Yeah, but deductions are a bitch. I'm already working overtime as I don't usually get finished closing until 9:30.

It's sad when my co-workers come over to me, to talk, and tell me that it'll back continue sucking. Gee, thanks.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound discouraging...it's just that, like I said...Safeway isn't the best company to wortk for. They care about their customers; the people lining their wallets - not the employees; the people (as they see it) draining them.

It's all founded on greed. That's all there is to it. Luckily most companies are smarter and realize that although the customers may be the lifeblood of the company, the employees are the backbone.
It might bring you some comfort to know that the store I worked at now has a horrible shortage of workers, and even in THIS economy they can't find anyone to fill the positions - because in this town bad news travels fast; everyone knows my story and the stories of countless others who have been through the same shit - probably the only reason they're still around is because they have to be; they're the only grocery store in town. They're suffering for their asshattery toward their employees.

What state do you live in? Perhaps I can help you find some job hunting resources.

Maryland.

The manager for the Starbucks called me to tell me that I do not have to come in today, nor am I scheduled for next week. Apparently I am not certified for the job, and I will have to finish training as soon as they talk to the store's manager. Which annoys me because *I* was under the impression that I did finish the training. All the booklets, activities, etc.

Y'know...because the person who trained me told me I was finished. <_<

Could they of not realize this sooner? It took them almost a week (started my first official day on Sunday) to find this out?

I finished training last week. Or, you know, that's what I thought, was told, etc.

My friends never have had good experiences with safeway's either. I had a friend quit because of something very similar to what happened to you.

Shikyo 10-01-2009 03:49 PM

The person who trained me bitched at me in person and over the phone. I was supposed to come in two extra days, according to the trainer, but I was never told this at all. From what she said, I'm irresponsible and I am lucky I still have my job. You know, how the hell am I supposed to come in when I'm not told to? I'm not psychic. Is it not that hard to tell me in advance or call me. She has my number. The fucked-up thing is from what I gathered, she told the employees that I was supposed to come in those days. Way to fuck-up and/or lie.

Basically I got the: "I work eight hours! I go to college full time! You wasted my time!" speech.

I'm pissed because she told me I finished training. That I was done. I finished all the booklets, and the activities in them. I'm curious to know what she didn't go over. I called the union up (not much help) and they told me the district manager was supposed to sign me off or something.

Again, the union can't really help me because I'm not in their system yet. I've only been hired at Safeway for a month now. Working...well...I really haven't been doing that due to my training schedule, and then being told I can't work until I'm finished training.

The fucked-up thing is when I was dropping off the booklets to the Starbucks manager, she asked me if I could work tonight. No, I can't. I really don't care if she told someone else I would be covering his shift. x_x Especially when I have a doctor appointment this evening.

I never worked at Safeway per say, but I don't like shopping there. Everything is way too overpriced and the customers are either followed or ignored completely. It doesn't sound like the job is worth keeping.

I worked at a job I hated for a month. No training, manager was RUDE to me and even the customers, and everytime I tried to do something, I got yelled at. I hated the job. I finally got fired for whatever reason, but hey, I don't regret it. I wanted to quit anyway.

If you want to quit, then quit. I'm sure there's lots of other companies that would value you a lot more, plus they would be a lot more willing to work around your schedule. I know Fred Meyer does that pretty well.

I worked at Starbucks for a while.. They gave me a lot of hours at first, i had 36 hours a week ... but i was working clopens (Close on night open the next morning) which i didn't mind but then i needed a break from it just one week so when i went back in and asked my manager to give me one week of "regular" hours where i would always work one shift for just one week.. She cut my hours to 16... I CAN"T LIVE OFF THAT!!!

so i went back into her and told her if you can't give me 25+ hours i will have to go somewhere else. So she gave me more hours... when i was supposed to be in classes. So again i went into the office and said look... I like working here but if you can't work with me you can work without me... so she made me work all the preclose shifts where i would have to clan the toilets and the floors and the mats... basically the dirty work shift. i was okay with this. You know i am a poor college student i need the money. SO i went on working this shift for a long time until she went back to working me only during my class times... I went online put in my application to a Krogers when they hired me i gave my two weeks... my last two weeks at Starbucks were my training days at Krogers. And i know Krogers is not the greatest place to work but its the best for me at the moment. Right now i am a cake decorator and i make enogh to make end meet, they never work me during class and i love doing my job.

I finished up training.

By finishing, I went on Saturday to finish up with my manager. Turns out that I've been finished all along, and I need that one girl, who trained me, to sign me off or something. Why didn't she do that in the first place? She had the books with her up until the time I picked them up. I was told that she would be there Sunday morning.

I woke up at 8am, drove to the Safeway my trainer worked at to find out that she wasn't scheduled for that day. At all. I dropped the books off, told the person who they were for, etc.

I haven't heard from anyone yet. I'm stopping over there tomorrow, both stores, to see what's happening.

>.<

I'm already job hunting again. I don't really have a job anymore. It'd be nice if they cross-trained me, even as a bagger. They obviously need people because their "Now Hiring" signs are by customer service.
