Just a Simple Question... ;D

Does Dyed hair make it harder to get a job?

I mean, like, unatural hair colours and coontails and iother things. Not that I plan on getting a job soon, I'm still yuong, I was just curious, and I have a coontail, soo...yeahhh.... XD

TheNena 09-22-2009 02:21 AM

I think it depends on a few things. First, it depends on where you're getting your job. Second, it depends on what color your hair is and how well you're taking care of it. I was hired at Target when my hair was bright red--although, it was on Halloween and Target's color is red. So that may or may not have had something to do with it.

Usually it depends on your interviewer and the type of position you'll be doing. For instance, if you're pursuing a career in the courtroom, you probably won't be welcomed with blue hair.=3

Heheh, okay then. Thank you! 8D

TheNena 09-22-2009 02:24 AM

Not a problem =3 The same can be applied for tattoos by the way. But generally speaking it also depends on where the tattoo is and what it's of. :]

I'm going to be totally honest with you on this one, because I have always wanted blue or purple hair...

While it does depend on the job that you're applying for, most of the time, it does not look professional for someone to have zany colored or crazy-looking hair. While I have friends with fun colored hair and dreadlocks, they have more laid back jobs that allow for that sort of thing. But if you're going into any kind of public service or business/office job, having fun colored hair is frowned upon.

I'm sure that one day when we're all older, it will become more accepted, but the people who run the business world right now are not as open-minded as the younger generations, and the -majority- find strangely colored hair unprofessional.

It really depends on the situation. I, sadly, have never been able to dye my hair fun colors because of this very reason.

Tattoos and piercings are also the same way. While I do have piercings at my office job, they're small and very unnoticeable. I have a tiny stud in my nostril, and rook piercings, and they're fine with that. I also have two tattoos, but most of the time, they're covered up. And when I don't cover them, no one really says anything either, so yeah... I think hair is more important for some reason. I'm sure my coworkers would be shocked if I showed up with blue hair.

Needless to say, but there are a lot of judgemental humans living on our planet.
They usually tend to suck the life and individuality out of us but we shouldn't let that wash away our personality. I wanted to dye my hair dark green, and I did. My mom almost killed me when she saw it, but I didn't dye it back. People will get used to it after a while.
White-collar jobs have strict rules and they usually tend to require employees to have the proper appearance. A shocking hair color wouldn't sound like a good idea. Maybe something like the "light-changing" type would do. You know? Like the "blue-black" color. The black changes to blue once it gets hit by party lights. It looks cool especially if you're in a bar or a dance club.

DEPENDS. I had purple hair and I worked for the city.

My advice? Stay with a "natural" color until you get the job, then ask afterward if there is a policy against hair color. That way you don't have to go through any trouble if your hair is already dyed.

Shazza 09-22-2009 06:37 PM

Well I guess it really depends on what you want to do. I mean I have dyed my hair, but they have never really been out there colours, I was blonde for a while and I had blue in my fringe but as I work in a call centre its not too inportant even though the dress code is pretty tight.
Though if you want to be in a position of power I may lay off the colours I mean say you wanted to be a judge you would never be taken seriously with pink bubblegum hair.
Though if your still young I say try out the zany colours while you can, thats what I did and its what my daughters do, just you see things differently once your a bit more experienced.

There are places you don't want to have funky hair and places you do. Places based on the individual and style then it's perfectly alright. But places where you're handling serious matters or maybe food items, then that's a no no.

Examples:
Hair Salon = Sure, why not?
Burger Joint = Probably not.
Fashion Boutique = Sure, why not?
Career Counseling = Probably not.

Hope it helps!

I had purple and red when I worked at a jewlery pagoda in the mall. They made us wear skirts an dress shirts, but never had rules about our hair. We sold a lot of teen jewlery so it wasn't really bad for buisness.

Same with the toy store I worked in, red hair with white streaks, and no one minded cause.. well you're surrounded by toys, you're expected to act a little childish (I loved that job so much *cry*)

But as soon as I got into computer sales and receptionist work.. it wasn't very appreciated and I had to go back to boring old brown :(. It's going to depend a lot on the job and the people you're working for. If you're determined to have colored hair and stand out.. I would suggest a toy store. :) (Like I said.. best job EVER)

That depends on the job you are applying for. Most businesses will not hire someone that looks outragous due to the public image you need to have. Then again depending on the type of business it may not matter. But you really need to be somewhat neat and clean and not outrageous for most job interviews. Your first impression is your most important. They usually make up their minds in the first 10 minutes whether they will consider you for the job. Attitude is also very important. Have a good attitude not a bad ass one.

Jovie 09-24-2009 04:51 AM

depends on what you're applying for. i would also offer at the interview to change it if they required that. always a good idea to ask.

I work retail and I think the most outrageous I saw come in from another store in the area was a girl with dark brown hair that had streaked blue green and purple bangs. If its a retail or pro type job stay away from alternative colors or piercings.

My boyfriend has to cover up his tattoo all the time at work, its just the word honor in chinsse on his hand but he still has to hide it. Also piercing more than maybe regulaar ear piercings and minor cartilge work, a small nose piercing and sometimes if your lucky aa tiny lip ring is the maax I've seen allowed most places.

Mystical_Rose15 09-25-2009 10:04 PM

Well it depends on what colors you use like if you have tacky lime green hair you bet they'll just turn you down! Natural hair colors are the best way to go!=3

xxemo_neko09xx 09-27-2009 04:14 AM

I believe it depends on the place of work and the type of job it is as well

mad hatter's tea party 09-27-2009 01:24 PM

I think it depends, sometimes it may unconciously influence employers, rather than conciously, it may give off an impression of being immature or irresposible or rebellious, not things a company would want in an employee. On the other hand, if you wanted to work in fashion or something a bit more alternative, having something that helps you stand out from the crowd might be a good thing.

The main profession where I know this is an issue is acting, as tatoos, pericings and odd hair colours will severely limit the characters you can play, and this would make it harder for you to get a career. You couldn't have blue hair in a period drama, for example.

On a side note, it's never too young to start getting work experience, as this helps you get a career in the future.
