Upset Puppy
We have a little dog (a Staffordshire bull-terrier) who is, for lack of a better word, "emotional". Now and then she seems to have anxiety attacks where she whines and whines like she is very scared, sad, sick or hurt, and it's usually almost impossible to get her to calm down. Anyone have any advice for me? It kind of upsets me how I feel my dog needs me but doesn't seem like I can help her.

Hmm. You every watched that TV show called The Dog Whisperer? That guy is amazing at sorting out doggy issues. I wouldn't even try to advice you myself because it could be so many things, and what I told you might make matters worse.
The guy has a website, here--> http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/ I'd check it out and see if you can find something on there to help you out  |
Jelly's right. Watch the dog whisperer. Cesar Milan can do anything to help a dog.
Me, my mom, and my sister have been watching it, and putting into practice with our over protective and dominate Boston Terrier, and she's becomeing much calmer and more welcoming! You can order books too that help train puppies, from Cesar's website |
That really seems like something that should be brought up to the vet. He is the expert on issues like that. It might be an issue that can be resolved through medicine if other approaches don't work.

I suggest speaking to your vet about your problems. For a while, I thought my dog had anxiety issues because he had somewhat of panic attacks, where he had trouble breathing... then I found out that he has something called reverse sneezing. Speaking to your vet is the best way to go.

Actually these things are common in small dogs. Because of the amount of breeding that people had to do before to get them so small messes with their heads. if it is really bad then go and take her to the vet and see if there is anything that can be done to help her/him out. All the luck to you.

for your dog...
well, one thing Ive noticed is that music really seems to affect dogs. So maybe some nice calming music like Frank Sinatra or something like that.
Also, sometimes just covering them with a blanket will help out.(Helps with people in shock why not?) Putting them somewhere, like on the couch wrapped in a blanket so they feel protected does it sometime too. That's what we do with our puppy when he freaks out a little. He seems to calm down. Those are my ideas for what might work. |
It could be any number of things. I have a dog who used to have a very bad habit of whining for attention. I quit giving her what she wanted - making her the center of attention - and eventually she stopped whining unless she genuinely needed something.

Take her to the vet first see what they say. Then if that doesn't work Call a local trainer or Ceaser Milan from the Dog Whisperer. but you need to take your dog to the veterinarians office first.
|
As people have said, take her to the vet.
Also, try to note the details of what's going on when she has these anxiety attacks. Not only will you have more to tell the vet, but if there are common aspects of the situation, you may be able to make small changes that help her. Sometimes very small things can upset an animal. |
