I'm sure everyone has heard that by 2012 the world is said to come to an end. Not sure I wanna believe that, mostly since people have said similar things, but also because it scares me a bit.
My view may be a bit cynical: If something beyond our control doesn't end the human race, the human race will end itself.
Anyone else have opinions about the dreaded Doomsday?

I don't think 2012 is real...
I actually posted a detailed explanation of my views on 2012 and the source of most of the 2012 theories in the Extended Discussion forum here: http://www.menewsha.com/forum/commun...-2012-a-5.html a few days ago. (My post is the last one.) It's a pretty long post, but I think it's important to let people know about some of the things going on with the New Age Movement and its origins and such.
Anyway, though, about 2012 itself... Like I said in my post that I linked to, as far as I know the ancient Maya didn't actually have any beliefs or myths about the world being destroyed in 2012. All we have is a calendar that ends, but no explanation of exactly what it going to happen. Now if you actually research into it, most books are claiming that it's going to be some kind of "spiritual awakening" or "ascension." However, these concepts aren't coming from the ancient Maya at all, but from New Age leaders who are "channeling" these ideas from spirits. Unfortunately for them, most of the theories either don't match up with the others or are scientifically inaccurate. So either these spirits have no idea what they're talking about, or they feel that they need to lie to us for some reason. (Given my own experiences with the New Age movement and such in the past, I'm actually fairly certain that most, if not all, of the spirits people contact through these methods are actually demons.)
As for 2012 itself... I think it's possible that the ancient Maya did realize that something was happening but weren't certain as of what. What I consider much more likely, however, than this spiritual awakening OR the destruction of the human race is that something like the New World Order is going to show up and promise to bring about the Age of Aquarius. They'll promise world peace and such, and it won't be until after they have control over the world that they'll reveal their true intentions, and the leader will turn out to be the Antichrist. This may sound bizarre, but if you read the entire thing that I posted in the other forum it'll make more sense. Of course, even more likely than this, though, I think is the possibility that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will happen. 2000 was supposed to bring either the Age of Aquarius or the end of the world as well, and that obviously didn't happen. Whenever anyone tries to set a date for the end, they always end up failing miserably. The Bible states that no one can know the date or the time of the prophecies coming true. So I'm hesitant to believe that there's really anything to this 2012 stuff in the first place, especially it being anything that people claim it will be. It could be the beginning of the End Times. The ancient Maya could've somehow been aware of that and not known exactly what they were seeing, but on the other hand, it could happen anytime before or after 2012 as well.

Hey guys, did you know there is already a really well established thread on this located here http://www.menewsha.com/forum/commun...ld-2012-a.html
This topic is really better suited for the debates forum than the life issue forum anyway, so how about heading over there and posting there instead of here:) Thank you!

That's a really elaborate explanation and one that is really interesting. I take it you're a Christian, correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that monotheism became the new way of religion but what really had me going is the tales of the Summerians and the Annanki which I think ties into the calender of the Mayans. The Summerians believed that the Annanki were gods and they were their servants which is kind of how polytheism came about according to one youtube video. You can look it up on there, it's really quite interesting.

I am going to lock this thread, not because it's not a very valid thread (it totally is), but because an identical thread exists in the debates forum, and this is really more of a debates kinda topic.
