*eyeroll* hummus is only good if you can actually stand it. To me it's disgusting and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! blech

jellysundae 12-09-2010 05:22 AM

Aw, I love it! I even made my own, which was delish! But you're right, the healthiest of healthy food is no good for you if you hate how it tastes!

Shouldn't not recommend something just because you dislike it yourself though, because it's not you that the advice is for ><

Bearzy 12-09-2010 07:03 AM

Hummus is Yummy! And it's good that cycling is good XD (I'm getting a bike for Christmas *squee!*) Maybe I should cut down on how much sugar I have in drinks... (three sugars in fruit tea...) And I'm working on cutting down on fizzy drinks (That's coke etc) I know they aren't good, but I drink them sooo often. Free refills are the bane of my existence, I can't resist.

jellysundae 12-09-2010 07:22 AM

Yeah, gradually cutting down on sugar that you add to drinks yourself, and sugar-laden manufactured drinks, will do you the world of good. If you slowly reduce the sugar you add to your tea, like go down to 2 1/2 teaspoons now, then in a couple of weeks go down to 2 teaspoons, and so on. You'll soon be down to just 1 spoonful without really realising or noticing much taste difference. Until you add more sugar than you've got used to, then you'll pull a face xD

Fizzy drinks are not just unhealthy because of the sugar in them anyway, they're just a bottle of chemicals, if you can work hard at cutting them out altogether, and just drinking water and fruit juice instead you'll be doing yourself a massive favour.
Pure fruit juice might still have a high sugar content, but it's natural sugar that's present in the fruit, and you're getting super important vitamins and other nutrients from juice, which you're definitely not getting from soda.
If you drink them as often as you say then cutting them out will be a BIG step towards you goal

I agree with almost everything that has previously been said on the topic, and would like to add my tidbit of information which I haven't found on here so far ^.^

It's completely true that you should eat smaller meals more frequently, as this keeps your metabolism running all day. But do not eat a big (or even medium sized) dinner late at night! This is because when the sun goes down, your body starts getting ready to shut down and sleep, and that includes your metabolism. If you eat a big dinner, most of that food will just be stored in your body.

I used to eat no breakfast, and little food throughout the day, and then a big dinner around 9. After I switched this habit around and ate more breakfast, with lunch and snacks inbetween, and a little healthy dinner, I automatically lost 5 kgs in a month changing nothing of what i ate, just when. :P hope this helps.

Codette 12-09-2010 04:27 PM

Yeah sorry about the hummus comment. I know some people really like it, and it is a good diet aid, I just really hate the stuff...

A thought I had though. When you have cereal or soup or anything you eat with a spoon, eat it with a teaspoon instead of a table spoon. It takes you longer to eat, which helps your body tell you your full, before you stuff yourself.

jellysundae 12-10-2010 05:03 AM

That will make the cereal soggier though xD Unless you go for something like Grape Nuts, which is basically gravel

I'd suggest putting yogurt on cereal, you can eat it slower then, and it feels more sustaining because it's thicker, and the flavour adds another level to the meal, plus if you throw extra fruit in it has something to cling to.
Though cereal can be a major waist-filler depending on what you eat, some are so loaded with sugar! Sugar and not much else! Cereal fills me up for approximately 1.5 hours, if it's something like Cheerios, even with a big bowl, stuff tastes nice but there's nothing to it.

Bearzy 12-12-2010 01:28 AM

I don't eat cereal... I'm not a big fan of it, except muesli with yoghurt. I usually have toast with Marmite. I don't know how to describe Marmite, and I think it's a New Zealand/Britain thing. Here's what Wikipedia calls it.

Quote:

The British version of the product is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful flavour, which is extremely salty and savoury with umami qualities. This distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it." It is similar to the Australian Vegemite and Swiss Cenovis.

jellysundae 12-12-2010 07:37 AM

Marmite's awesome! All those B vitamins! Far better on toast than anything else I'd say, as all the other things for toast are loaded with sugar or fat.

What kind of bread do you eat? And what's your food bugdet like? Because it's all very well suggesting things for a person to eat, but if they're on a really tight budget they often can't afford the better stuff, like a nice multigrain wholemeal loaf instead of white and so on.

Bearzy 12-12-2010 08:04 AM

I eat mostly multigrain and wholemeal bread, white has always been a treat food in our house. As for my food budget, I still live with my parents, so I don't do the shopping. I'm glad you like marmite! Some people think it's weird.

jellysundae 12-12-2010 11:56 AM

Yeah! Marmite is win!

Are your parents supportive about your weigh loss ambitions? Does your Mum cook for you or do you do your own?

Reducing the amount of carbs that you eat in your last meal of the day could help you if you have dinner in the evening. Don't cut them out or you'll get super hungry before bedtime, just switch out some of the carb content for more veg and lean protein.

And have a breakfast that has some protein in it. Breakfast is the most unbalanced meal for most people, generally being nothing but carbs, and that's not good, your brekkie will sustain you for longer if it has protein too, so you're less likely to reach for sugary snacks mid morning. I like a scrambled egg sandwich in the morning, it's tasty and healthy and fills me up nicely. Pro tip: Don't even make scrambled eggs with olive oil, it makes them taste really odd!

Bearzy 12-12-2010 10:29 PM

I have no idea how to make scrambled eggs! Unlike most other recipes, it always eludes me. Most of the time mum or dad cook dinner, but I make my own lunches and breakfasts. In the holidays I'll often eat uuum "Eggie in the basket" (See V for Vendetta if you don't know what that is, yet another food I can't describe.) And that will be breakfast/brunch (depending what time I wake up.)

Demoncat 12-13-2010 01:17 AM

What I would do is eat a balanced and healthy diet and try to stay away from pop and junk food, and don't eat to the point that you're stuffed. And pretty much just exercise, find something you like, and go with it ( I found running fun for a while and soccer gives you a really nice workout too. :) )

By the way I love eggie's in the basket and V for Vendetta. XD

My sister lost 50lbs by just eating smaller portions and healthier. She cut out fatty foods and fast food. It's a lifestyle change, not a diet. She also started walking every where. Keep in mind that she lost this weight in less than a year just being more active and eating portions and healthy.

Bearzy 12-13-2010 06:43 AM

The thing with walking is... I already do. I walk at least a mile a day on average, more most days actually. I have no other way to get around. There's no public transport in this town, and a lot of empty space between places.

Somebody said something the other day that I wanted to ask about. Is there a link between sleep patterns and weight loss?

jellysundae 12-13-2010 09:53 AM

That depends, what did they tell you? If your sleep patterns are irratic then that might have a small adverse effect on your weight. To strive for optimum health if would be good to sleep at the same time every day and for a decent amount of hours, to allow your body to follow a natural rhythm, but sleeping badly is unlikely to make you gain many excess pounds.

Bearzy 12-13-2010 10:06 PM

That's pretty much what I wanted to know. They just said that it had an effect, didn't give much detail. Thanks for that.
