So just a few months ago I moved over to Washington from Oregon to live with my fiance and his family. At this point I am still there, and surely enough, there is something I forgot to do.
I forgot to update my information at the DMV. Or I guess here, it is called DOL. This is partially because at the start of it, I wasn't sure whether or not I would be going into a homeless shelter or into his parent's home. But it turns out that they took me in, and from early December, I have been sleeping here, eating here, taking showers, ect.
First of all, I want to ask, is it required to update my address for an instructional permit within 10 days/30 days? What is the consequence if you don't?
I knew at the time that I wanted to stay in Washington, even though for a time I didn't know what my actual address would be or for how long. (They weren't sure how long they were willing to keep me here at the start, so each day they would be like, "Call the shelter again and check their availability" and that lasted for 1-2 weeks.)
As is......
*It is one month until I am married. I plan to change my name
*I consider it would be useful to be able to drive
*I have 3 1/2 months until my instructional permit expires
*I am trying to get into an apartment with my fiance
*I want to be honest
*I don't want to pay more money than I need to
*I plan to move to Japan in 6-7 years, and become a Japanese citizen, American driving laws overall irrelevant
What I want from you is a suggestion of what I should do for my ID/driving status.
[!] Should I keep my instructional permit? (Is it possible for me to extend the time until it expires? I only found information about that for driving licenses, not permits)- (Which would include address change, name change, and eventually, testing)
[!] Should I try my best to get a Washington state driver's license by the end of July? (Which would include address change, name change and testing, and let me drive without supervision)
[!] Should I switch to Washington State ID? (Which would give me ID but not driving privileges, and be the most simple process as far as I'm concerned)
**If I switch to WA State ID, neither my fiance or I will have driving privileges .... like ever, lol.
Thank you to all who post!!
