Thanks everyone for replying! Sorry it took so long for to reply back, we painted the living room yesterday and today. Looks a lot better!

I understand they don't want us to get really far in debt and those people probably do just want our money. Hubby just thinks the longer we wait, the more expensive it will be or we'll never get around to it because it will always cost too much. We really do need to get some new ones, just sitting here typing this I can feel the draft coming in. The boys' room is really bad, so much so that when it's windy it almost feels and smells like you are outside.

So the loan company called back on Friday and talked to hubby. Hubby told them t hat we need to get our credit cards paid off first so he wanted to decline the offer. The loan officer then tried to talk hubby into getting a couple thousand more to pay off the credit cards so we'd just have the one payment. The payment would then be $155 a month for ten years. I still feel that it is too much. I figured it up and we would pretty much pay 1400 something a year for one window. so we'd pay for a window every year, we thought about getting ten windows replaced. I don't know what he's decided now. He's on the fence. He wants new windows, but doesn't want to listen to our parents. Also afraid these people are ripping us off. I guess I will update again tomorrow night when the loan officer calls again.

Well, I've been skirting around just outright saying it, but I'm glad you declined that offer because those windows ARE a ripoff. I mean, I do think you need new windows by what you're saying, just not these windows. These windows are waaaaay overpriced. My family has been dragging me constantly into home improvement stores specifically to look at windows because they're closing in the back porch this year, and I can say from experience that they're none of them 1400 dollars a window. More like 1400 for three.

I like what Mystic said because I totally forgot about it. Look into if you can get tax write offs for the windows. My parents got new insulation for the attic completely paid for by a tax write off because it saved on energy.

And no one said that the loan had to go to buying those specific windows. If it is just a generic home improvement loan, you should be able to apply it to a more reasonable installation (or even doing it yourself).

Uhh yes they overstepped their boundaries right there... and honestly sure they watch them but at least they get to see them... so they should be grateful for what they get and let you make your own mistakes.

I hate to admit it, but they were right about these window people. The one salesman can be very rude, he was rude to me on the phone last night when I tried to tell them we changed our minds. Sounds like we might be stuck now. Hubby has been rude back, hopefully we get this crap figured out. I just think my dad should have let us find this out on our own rather than making such a big deal about it. But then again, the window people are doing what they are supposed to and hubby is blowing the issue out of proportion. >.<; It's a long story that just happened yesterday/today.

ElysiumFate 03-28-2013 02:50 AM

Ugh, yeah, door to door salesmen are almost never trying to help you out. I still agree your parents overstepped their boundaries (I think they were justified to tell you you were getting ripped off) and they didn't handle it well. But I hope you can get out of the deal. Have you signed any contracts yet? If not then you're fine...and really...if you don't pay them...they won't exactly give you the windows, but I don't know how much trouble you'd get in for that. Could be nothing if you didn't sign anything.

The Wandering Poet 03-28-2013 08:06 PM

Well if you haven't signed anything you can just tell them "Look it's not happening, goodbye"
Plus if things are different than the papers you DID sign that's grounds for breaking the contract too

llonka 03-28-2013 08:33 PM

I don't even know what we did sign. >.< Everything just happened so fast and I think with my dad being here hubby felt like he needed to prove our parents wrong? I dunno. It's just a big mess. From now on I'm either not home and not answering the door or telling people no before they offer their product.

ElysiumFate 03-30-2013 04:16 AM

Ooooh...yeah, I hope you didn't get yourself into a mess. Do you have a copy of that contract? You really should have one. You've a right to know what you signed...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's why my dad eventually turned into a "get the F off my lawn" kinda man with everything except for girl scouts and the milk man.

llonka 03-30-2013 02:39 PM

Nope we don't have a copy. I guess we are getting it done. :( Dealing with the owner now though, since hubby complained about the salesman. He knocked the price down to 7800.

ElysiumFate 03-31-2013 03:49 AM

That price is significantly better...I actually don't think you could get much better of a price so long as they're installing them for you. I think you can rest easy on that price now. What it was before was really ridiculous.

llonka 03-31-2013 12:57 PM

Oh good, that makes me feel better. ^.^

ElysiumFate 04-01-2013 01:17 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't worry so much about it anymore. But that lower price just goes to show you how badly you were getting ripped off. That's what it should've been in the first place.

llonka 04-01-2013 01:22 AM

That's true. I told hubby sometimes you have to throw a fit to get the right price, it's sad but true.

ElysiumFate 04-03-2013 05:31 AM

Yeah, pretty much. I've also been known to give people the silent treatment before to get the price lowered. It has worked as well.

llonka 04-03-2013 01:00 PM

Well come to find out, we've only been preapproved for loan. Now we are getting the run around trying to get more info to them so we can go ahead and get the loan. >.< Tired of dealing with these people!

ElysiumFate 04-03-2013 11:58 PM

Yeah, banking stuff is never any fun, and it's always mores work than it's worth. XP

llonka 04-04-2013 02:06 PM

Grr just frustrated with it. There is an hour time difference, and their offices close before hubby gets off work. It's a pain.

Cardinal Biggles 04-05-2013 02:05 AM

Unhelpful sidenote (well, maybe helpful, moneywise): You might not see the windows as ideal, but for people who want to restore their houses, or who want antique character for whatever reason, those original windows might be a desirable item. You should consider trying to sell them.

ElysiumFate 04-05-2013 03:01 AM

Ahh, yeah, Card has a good point. There are plenty of house restorers out there who would be thrilled, no matter how banged up they are.

llonka 04-05-2013 01:14 PM

Hmmm I wonder if they'd let us keep them?

ElysiumFate 04-05-2013 03:55 PM

They're still your windows. If you don't want them to take them, they can't. That would be stealing, as you do own the windows currently in your house.

The Wandering Poet 04-05-2013 08:43 PM

Just make sure they don't break the window during the replacement...

llonka 04-12-2013 06:10 PM

Okay so here's an update. We signed papers to get the loan. xP Now we are waiting on the check to get here so we can call the window people to see when they are going to install the windows. Hubby dug out what the door to door guy had us sign and it was a contract. I wish we wouldn't have been in such a big hurry and could have read things better.

One thing is still bothering me, do home improvements affects food stamp benefits?
