Bad start to new school year
School started yesterday for me: I did not finish the vocab for my AP American History summer hw because I rushed the job and found out I had to type the questions and answers out. This caused me to work frantically on the hw until four in the morning the next day. Second day of school: Which led me to forgot I had Newspaper hw where I had to write an article on something special that happened during the summer. I chose the release of the final Harry Potter. The problem was I did a rush job during lunch, it didn't reach half the page, I didn't type it as she asked us to, and I really wanted a good position on the Newspaper staff! I am a procrastinator, but I do my part in whatever I am relied upon, such as in Newspaper. I know I write very well, but because I only had two hours of sleep and the class was second to last of the day, I was tired and I turned in what I believed was totally below my abilities. This was our first chance to show her how we can right! I can't believe I wrote that the last book's name was "Harry Potter and the Godric's Hallows." OMG. I will never do homework until that late at night EVER again. I know a lot of kids also did that story and mine was probably the worst. I'm not a teacher's pet, but I have never had a teacher who looked down on me before on my abilities. I don't think I have to tell her why my article looked like it was written by an unprofessional and probably a first grader. Does anyone think teachers will judge students the rest of the year by this embarrass of a first impression? Do you the teacher will call me out and tell me that I should leave Newspaper because it was obvious I didn't put any heart into that article? T_T I know I can write better... Is this a bad start for the year, or do you think I can repent by doing great the rest of the year and showing that teachers should not give homework the first day of school? |
It was only the first day. No teacher will judge any student based on one experience.
If you'd like to, go out of your way to write another article and turn it into her. Kindly explain that you were having an off week, and that you'd like a second chance. I'm sure she'd accept it. |
I'm with Nathuram, I doubt the teachers will judge you for the rest of the year based on one bad day. Everyone has a bad/off day. It happens. Just remember to do your homework for the rest of the year, try not to do writing for Newspaper so late and the teachers will be fine.
I'd also be surprised if you were the only person to forget to do their summer homework. Just take a deep breath, realize that even though today sucked, you can always improve tomorrow. |
All you have to do is prove your ability by writing an absolutely fabulous piece next time around. I'm a decent writer myself, and I've written some absolutely terrible things... but my teachers still all know that I'm good. They won't judge you on just one piece, don't worry.

What happened, you cannot change now. Keep that in mind.
From now on, just work to the abilities you know you have. Once your teacher(s) see your full potential, the first impression of this school year won't matter. It will become more apparent to them that it was rushed. Just keep going. :3 |
Oh, I didn't notice that it sounded like that... The newspaper article was given the first day of school. I forgot to do it on the first day of school because I was rushing a summer hw that was due the second day of school. (I didn't type the stuff)
@Nathuram - She told the class today that she has a prejudice against stupid people... she scares me a bit. She seems to be the type of teacher to judge a student based on one experience... @InSaneWeTrust - Yea, I know it won't make it to the newspaper if I only turn in rush jobs. Heh. You're right, in one of my classes where they said the summer assignment was due on the first day and the teacher asked, only ten kids had it. @So Beautiful. So Shattered - I hope I have the chance to prove my worth. There are a lot of good writers in the class, and I want to stand out. She told us today that only, like two, kids' article stood out to her. She doesn't seem easy to please... T_T @Chiairen Hoshino - Yea, unless time machines are invented! Er... probably not a good idea to change the course of the past though... T_T It was rushed to the EXtreme. I hadn't gotten back to the school schedule of waking up early yet. |
Myself I have a prejudice against stupid people too so I know where she is coming from. :)
I think though, that even though you flubbed the first article, your teacher will be more impressed with you if you not only show her that you can write well but that you also show improvement and demonstrate that you can take constructive criticism and use it to make your writing better. I think the majority of teachers (not all of them) know that the first few weeks of school were the hardest. They were students once themselves and crammed and stayed up all night trying to finish homework and study. Anyone that forgets that experience doesn't make a worthy mentor IMHO. I think you'll be fine though :) |
