I want them from both breeders and pounds. D: Because... I want to rescue doggies and maybe kitties. But I also like that good breeders work towards preserving the breed's best traits and care deeply for their dogs, and those are the kind of people I do so want to support. But petstores are a no. 'Cause those puppies usually come from puppy mills.

I want to rescue some old dogs when I grow up. The kind that people bypass for puppies and that only have a year or two left and just need someone to love them again before they pass on. A few years ago, on this golden retriever rescue site I saw a sixteen year old dog who was there because his owner had died, and I cried and cried when my mom told me we could not adopt him. ;_; It just breaks my heart to think of those old dogs dying lonely and in kennels when all they've ever done is love and want to be loved.

Agreed. D: I think... I think I'll be adopting older dogs from pounds if I can land a job that pays well enough with the right hours. :< Younger dogs and cats are almost guaranteed it get homes, but that's not really the same situation with older animals.

Edit; Lathy has to take a shower then head to bed. D: We're heading into town tomorrow for this showing of ships at the harbor. Fully rigged, functioning, in use ships sailed over from France and England and a whole bunch of places and visitors get to go on them. <3 I'll be bringing my camera, and I'll take some video if there ever seems to be things worth recording. :'D

Especially like... the SUPER DUPER old ones. D: All I could think about for weeks was that sixteen year old golden being found dead in his kennel, with no one comforting him before he died and wondering where his dead owner was and oh, it's making me cry just thinking about it and this was like three years ago.
And seriously, for all I know, that dog could have been adopted. I just hate... hate the thought of elderly doggies being unwanted and alone. I mean, I hate the thought of any dog being unloved and alone, but for some reason, it chokes me up the most when it comes to old doggies. D:

As nice as it is to rescue dogs, sometimes breeders can be the better choice for some people. I've had six dogs, four from pounds, and two from breeders. Of the four from pounds, one had serious helth problems that resulted in his death, and two had agressive and borderline dangerous behavioral problems. With dogs from breeders, there's more of an assurance of a clean bill of health and a more expected temperment.

This isn't one hundred percent, one of our dogs from a breeder had eye problems as a pup and is now mostly blind in one eye, and our other dog from a breeder is a lot louder and harder to train than the general tempermnent of his breed is said to have. But since we know their background, we're able to know that they were properly socialized from a young age and are less likely to be agressive, as well as that they won't have any major health problems due to genetics.

Rescue dogs are wonderful (the best dog I ever had was from the pound, granted she was one of the ones who had behavioral issues) and are often the most perfect pets people could imagine, but there's less assurance there when it comes to what to expect as the dog gets older. So perhaps that's where your parents were coming from in getting a dog from a breeder.
There's been talk of a new dog some years from now, and I've been clamoring to get a rescue golden when the time does come, but my dad wants a dog from a breeder for the same reasons I gave.

I wasn't able to get a whole lot of good pictures of the boat it's self, simple do to it's sheer size and how close we were, but I do have some pictures. :3 No real stories, though.
