Ah no the third volume has a purple-ish cover with skulls and a creepy lady, it's the autumn volume :)
I have the first three english bibles and then about 6 or so of the Japanese version. I wish they weren't so expensive XD Then I could get more..

fiarra 02-18-2009 01:07 AM

>.>;; I should get 2 and 3 eventually... I just always end up buying manga instead when I'm at the bookstore.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 05:36 AM

Hello!

I only just discovered the Menewshan nation so I looked through the threads and found this thread! :) I love lolita fashion and I really wish I could dress that way in real life. But right now, I just make sure I have ribbons and lace on almost everything I wear ^^"

Its nice to meet everyone here and I absolutely adore the little drawings on the front page! Theya are simply adorable!

Pekopon 02-18-2009 08:51 AM

Hi pa-pancake!! Welcome to Menewsha :D

It can be hard to make lolita practical enough to wear everyday. I usually only wear it once in a while to meet up with other lolitas are to do something particularly "loli" (like purikura :D) Otherwise my style is more punk inspired!

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 11:03 AM

Thanks for the welcome Pekopon! ^^

But actually I've been in Menewsha for awhile now. Its just that I am new in this side of the forums because I never exactly explored this place thoroughly ^^"

But wow! You have lolita meetings with others? O.o That's cool! The only time I would actually dare do the lolita thing would be during 'anime conventions' but then there are a lot of people who go dressed up as lolis because some goth fashion here has been um, tarnished by a specific group.

The 'lala' people. These are the people who try to dress up like the Japanese but always get the wrong idea having dragons everywhere or walking around in their bedroom slippers in a mall. O.o And they would speak in very rough Chinese dialects and have funny names like 'Simba' and 'Nala'... So its actually hard to wear lolita fashion here without getting associated to the 'lala' group ^^"

But I never wear anything too drastic anyways. Lolita clothes are really pricey >.<" But I do have a cute dress that looks mild yet could still pass off as lolita. Or I think it would. I wonder if it's alright to post a picture here?

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 11:09 AM

Post your picture Pancake just make sure it doesn't stretch the page. Or you can post a link to the picture, I need something nice to look at after seeing the worlds ugliest dress.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 12:30 PM

Ahaha! Its not exactly lolita neither is it really outstanding ^^" But I could use some feedback on the type of hair and shoes that could go with it :)

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...01-09_1517.jpg

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 12:45 PM

Nice dress, it's simpleness makes it nicer than some of the over done ones that I've seen.

Alot of people that I have seen wear Mary Jane style shoes, when they do a lolita look.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 01:00 PM

Thank you! :) Its easy to wear since I just slip it on. Only I have no shoes to match except a pair of brown wedges with a bow. But one of the wedges had the bow practically ripped off. So until I get that fixed, I don't have anything to match with it ^^"

Mary Jane shoes are those flat round tipped shoes right? Those would be cute too!

I love discussing clothes. I don't get that much help from people around me in real life for lolita fashion since my closer friends are not really into it ^^"

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 01:06 PM

You can get flat Mary Janes and ones with platforms. I like Mary Janes because they have a rounded toe at the front and a strap across the top to hold the shoe on better and they come in different colours and designs as well.

Mary Janes are cheep compared to some of the lolita style boots you can get. I would much rather pay £42, which is about $59, for a pair of Mary Janes than paying £120, about $170, for a pair of lolita style boots.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 01:20 PM

O.o I live in Malaysia so £42 is about 200 ringgit here ^^" And that is a lot of money to pay for shoes XD The dress itself only cost me 25 ringgit which is about 4 pounds O.o Wow, I just realized at 4 pounds you can barely get breakfast there.

Platform Mary Janes are really hard to find but we do have shops dedicated to gothic fashion but its mostly punk goth but we do get some lolita stuff in the mix but even then I have barely seen many platform Mary Janes. Just a lot of boots with way too many chains =.=" But I just realized the shoes that are in my avatar now would match the dress as well! Are those Mary Janes by any chance, since they have the strap and all?

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 01:29 PM

I go to places that do top quality products so some of the things are expensive, but it's better to pay that bit more and not have it fall apart.

I shop at alternate clothing shops and you have to keep going in because most of the time they don't have the same products twice. Depending on the brand of the shoes then most of the time they don't get labeled as being Mary Jane style.

I'd class your avi's shoes as Mary Janes.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 01:41 PM

Ah. We don't really have top quality lolita shops here since all the shops are just located in one mall really and that mall usually sells clothes at affordable prices but the quality is not to say really very good. For that, I'd have to travel to Bangkok where the following for the fashion is much stronger

I believe in UK, it should be easier to find clothing like this since it is based of Victorian styled clothing right? Though it was just popularized by Japanese culture.

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 01:51 PM

Victorian style clothing is in fashion again over here so it's easier to pick up a few lolita looking clothes from high street shops. But it's quite hard to get hold of lolita style clothing unless you go to an alternate clothing shops or online, seeing as lolita hasn't got to the point where it's really big thing.

Apparently rocking horse and dolly ballerinas are lolita style shoes as well.

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 02:09 PM

Its been around my country for a long time now but its just that its picked up by the wrong kind of people so anyone dressed up as a lolita would get stereotyped ^^" Which is why it is hard to go all out on an outfit. I would really love to do the poofy skirt thing but it probably won't happen in a million years >.<"

I had to go look up on 'rocking horse' shoes because I was not sure what they are exactly. They look like wooden platforms and are love!!! I don;t think we can find them here though. :( But yeah ballerina slippers look very lolita! Its probably because they look so dainty and have lots of ribbon around. Ribbons are something I always try to have in any outfit I wear even if it isn't lolita

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 02:20 PM

Alot people get the wrong idea because of stereotypes and the people who live up to those stereotypes just make it worse.

I had to look up rocking horse shoes as well, I knew what they looked like already but I had no idea of their name.

I went though a ribbon obsession at one point, I liked alot of clothes with ribbons on which ment I ended up buying this skirt:

http://i44.tinypic.com/11jm735.jpg

Pa-pancake 02-18-2009 02:42 PM

Yeap and the stereotype here is that lolita girls have no fashion sense because they mix things wrongly and can only scold people with foul words in Chinese and are very rough O.o I don't know how that happened since lolitas are supposed to be gentle and sweet looking.

I love the skirt! O.O Ribbons everywhere! Though I would have liked the ribbons in white more but the general idea of the skirt is really pretty! Do you leave the ribbons hanging or do you tie them up? Ooh I have a picture of a skirt too since I took the pic last time when my friend wanted to do a photoshoot.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...01-09_1547.jpg
You can ignore the top ^^" It was just something I tried matching it with.

HIM_ROCK 02-18-2009 02:47 PM

I normally leave the ribbons haning, I nearly got the red version of it but the pink one stood out more.

Making a skirt like that one is really easy to do you just have to find the right pattern, I found one which had two sections to it because it was supposed to have frills but I had lace and net on it insted. Unfortinatly it dissapeared before I could finnish it.

fiarra 02-19-2009 06:45 AM

PAN!!!

My black rocking horse shoes are my second favorite part of my lolita wardrobe. T_T Pity I don't have them here with me now.. I forgot them when I was moving things out. *woe*

I would prefer a pink one too compared to a red one actually. But I wouldn't know what to do with the ribbons ^^" I would tir them up into mini bows everywhere XD

But you actually make your own lolita clothing? That's cool! It would really help since lolita clothes are expensive. But I tried sewing some lace and ribbon to my headband once. Epic FAIL! =.=" I forgot to use elastic thread so the headband became to small to fit on my head. I was so stupid XD

I'm not really a fan of net just yet. I can't really picture myself wearing fishnet leggings. Stockings around the ankle would be okay. I have a pair of white ones. ^^"

Hey Fiarra *Lolita hugs*

They are at home now that you are at campus? ^^" Maybe the next time you go home, you could grab them. I probably won't be able to walk well in those or get around even. Since I drive to campus. It might be a little dangerous. Plus, I'm pretty tall already so wearing those might make me taller than my boyfriend XD

fiarra 02-19-2009 04:39 PM

Oh if only it were that easy. =X No they're at my ex's apartment. The box wasn't with the rest of my things so I totally forgot to grab them as I'd only owned them for about a month before he dumped me. So it wasn't in my mental list of "things I own" yet.

I have to go back eventually for a dresser anyway, so I'll get them then.

As far as walking in them goes.. it's actually not too hard! The platform is very even so it feels like normal shoes. The only thing I worry about is when I'm walking down stairs because of the cut-out in the back. xDD

And making a lolita skirt isn't too hard. The easiest way is you just cut out a rectangle 2.5-3 times your waist measure wide and then you just make a channel for a nice thick elastic at the top. Hem the bottom.. add lace/ruffles.. and you're done!

Pa-pancake 02-19-2009 05:14 PM

Ah... Now that is a different situation all together ^^" But well, hope you get them back though because I would imagine those are one of your prized possessions. I would probably not allow anyone in my house to wear them. I really do want a pair now that we are having discussions on it :P

I'm quite a klutz so walking in high shoes might be tough for me and yeah, going down the stairs does sound difficult thinking about the back part. Walking down in general since I am tall so my center of balance might get all wonky. I really haven't worn platforms in a long time1 Not since they were the in thing in my country. So far rocking horse shoes aren't in fashion yet. We are pretty slow with all this but I have a feeling it will be some time this year when stores will have them in stock.

I really can't sew except to fix buttons and tears but that's about it so whatever you said just now just went into my head and registered as '???' what is a channel on an outfit? O.o I'm sorry, I've never really done well in sewing for my home economics class XD

I keep double posting today! Fiarra please help me ^^"

fiarra 02-19-2009 06:16 PM

*merges*

I have pretty good balance so I suppose that helps me walk in them. And the fronts are rounded up so I have fun rocking forwards onto my toes when I'm wearing them. ^^ And I'm not sure if rocking horse shoes are really even in fashion here. They've been around for a bit now since Vivienne Westwood first came up with the design.

And by channel I meant like.. folding the top part over a little bit and sewing it down so that a little tunnel is made in the fabric to put some elastic in. :)

HIM_ROCK 02-19-2009 06:49 PM

If it was made my Vivienne Westwood then it's always in fashion Fiarra. Even if it isn't what everyone else is wearing.

For the channel if I remeber rightly then it's 2cm extra added onto the lenth of the thing you're making then when you fold it over it doesn't take it off what you're making.

Now it was either here on somewhere else that someone was asking about hairstyles for Lolita and I found this:

Quote:

The Basic guideline for Lolita fashion
  • Wear skirts just above the knee/ knee length. It’s not lolita if it is too short.
  • Wear a petticoat and bloomers underneath knee length skirts to add shape.
  • Wear mary janes/dolly ballerinas/ rocking horse shoes in either black, pink, white, red depending on the outfit.
  • Wear white stockings/tights or knee high socks, lace trim socks look especially nice.
  • The best hair styles for lolitas are straight with a fringe, ringlets with a fringe in natural colours, it looks better when you wear a head dress/bow.
  • If appropriate, wear a head dress, head bow, mini top hat, mini crown in a suitable complimentary colour to your outfit.
  • Lacey parasols in white/black look perfect with most loli outfits.
  • Lolitas should wear minimal make up, good foundation that matches skin tone, red/nude /pink lip gloss, defined black eyeliner, false eyelashes.
  • Pinafore dresses should be worn with a blouse or cut sew(lacey t-shirt) underneath, generally in either black or white depending on the outfit.

fiarra 02-19-2009 07:37 PM

Just because something is in high fashion style, it doesn't mean it will necesarily be sold mainstream. xD I suppose my point was that they've been around for a bit and are still impossible to find except online.

And that's a pretty good guide.. although I would add that if any of the suggestions don't look good on you (like.. i would look terrible with bangs/a hime-cut).. then just go with what looks nice.
