No, I only thought they were. It was on DeviantArt; I appreciate comments on my stuff, but the way he made so many consecutive comments, along with the dreaded 'firsts' and the way they thought I was a 'gaiafag' made me get a bit on edge...

You could just try telling the person that even if they didn't mean the comments to be insulting, that you felt they were personally a little too harsh for you, and to please not post comments like that on your page again. If they continue to bother you with comments that hurt your feelings, then they really are just doing it to be rude.

well why not ask the person, why he keeps say rude stuff about your art? maybe with the negitive comments hes trying to help you improve

No, I don't think so. The only bad things he said was that he just kept saying 'first', the assumption that I was a 'gaiafag' when I quit about two years ago, and that I was his enemy now.
