Nope, they don't disappear. =)
The event ITEMS (not the commons) are usually bought with event currency, although there may be a new system this time around...
The event currency is different from gold, so you earn it differently. You may earn it in addition to gold through posting, or you may have to find the currency around the site, etc., etc. :)

It's safe to say that if you just want the event items and not the event commons, that you should just save up your gold for the Overlord and just gather the event currency as you go for the event items. :P
