Maybe you could try asking has anything new happened or come up?
Or maybe talk about how you've been talking to new people on Menewsha or something, has he been talking to anyone new? And it's probably bothering you so much since you feel like you'd know if he had one, cause I'm assuming that's how your friendship is, or how it's gotten to be over the years.
