*pokes my peanut head in* I'm fine with being called she/her, but you can use gender-neutral pronouns when referring to me if you want. ;D

TanaChan 09-27-2010 01:39 PM

Of course I'll try Crow-Sama

Saravi Boo 09-29-2010 04:19 PM

I'm good with being called her/she. *shrugs* My avi changes gender pretty often but I do not. ^_^ I don't think anyone in here is going to stereotype me because I'm female, ne? ^_^ I'll try to keep up with who prefers gender neutral pronouns but I apologize in advance if I slip up every now and then.

TanaChan 09-29-2010 05:03 PM

Tana calls her self what ever gender her avi is *shrugs*

The_Crow 09-29-2010 10:32 PM

The funny thing is that when people use standard gender-oriented pronouns with me there is a 50% chance they'll get it wrong. :headdesk: So whenever it happens, it generally triggers the response of "I never said I was a [blank]".

TanaChan 09-29-2010 11:57 PM

lols
Tana would do that if she didn't use the gener specific words that she already does to talk about herslef.... *meh*

ghostPastry 09-30-2010 05:18 AM

Yeah, it sucks that pronouns are determined by gender. :/ But at least nouns aren't, like in French or Spanish. That would be even worse. I hate that everything has to be so binary.

ljosberinn 09-30-2010 08:53 PM

Urgh yes, English is easy at least.. Icelandic has gender defined adjectives as well as pronouns, and that can bother me sometimes. And I've never heard any suggestions for gender neutral pronouns either, probably because the adjectives would also need solving.. unless you used the neutral version, but that would be equal to calling a person "it", which is considered pretty rude by most people.
On Mene I usually refer to people by their avatar's gender if I have to refer to them by gender, though usually I try to get around it, especially with people where I don't know for sure what gender pronoun they prefer themselves. Obviously if they specifically ask to be referred to by a certain pronoun I'll do my best to remember that. I don't care what pronouns people use for myself, as long as it's not "it'. P:

Saravi Boo 09-30-2010 08:56 PM

I generally use the person's name instead of a pronoun if I'm not sure. It also is good for decreasing confusion about who I'm talking to/about. ^_^

ghostPastry 09-30-2010 09:58 PM

I don't really refer to people by pronouns in general, but when I do, I go by either avatar or what others are calling them. I figure if someone's avatar is a certain gender, they don't mind being called that gender. :b

And I'm fine with being called anything! Even "it" is cool with me, because it doesn't specify a gender! :3

MasterOfSpazz 09-30-2010 10:14 PM

you look like an itXD
just joking lols XD

The_Crow 10-01-2010 12:42 AM

-hugs Anna-dearest- You look better than an it, both in your girly pictures and your tomboy pictures. The only time people may be called 'it' is if it is consentual objectification as part of Dominance and Submission. Some people like taking humanity away from others, and there are some that actually like their humanity taken away. Aside from those consentual circumstances, I don't think any person should be called 'it'.

MasterOfSpazz 10-01-2010 01:20 AM

I would hate to be called an it, is why I joked
*nods*

ghostPastry 10-01-2010 02:17 AM

Aww, thank you Crow-dearest. ;w; I never really thought of the objectification before, but I totally agree. I know that I would never call anybody an it unless they specifically asked me to.

@Spazz- Don't worry about it, dear. I know you were only joking. :3

MasterOfSpazz 10-01-2010 03:07 AM

YAY! *snugs*

The_Crow 10-07-2010 12:42 PM

Some things are rather backwards in this world. A person should not be an 'it', and a piece of furniture should be neither masculine nor feminine by its name alone. I wonder how that started in the romance languages. Does anybody have a clue?

Saravi Boo 10-08-2010 02:20 AM

Not sure how it started but it certainly makes those languages hard to learn. I mean, why does a door need a gender? A chair? It's annoying and it rarely makes any sense that I can discern. Japanese was easier. They don't even differentiate between Mr. or Ms./Mrs., it's all -san. I like -san. It's a good word. ^_^ I also like -chan, -kun, and -sama. ^_^

The_Crow 10-08-2010 03:35 AM

Well -san is the most neutral honourific you can have. -chan is usually used for small children, and among close friends, especially females. -kun indicates a bit ofmore closeness but isn't as 'girly' as -chan and -sama is to show respect to somebody above your station in most cases.

Saravi Boo 10-08-2010 03:45 AM

Yes, I'm aware of the uses. I took Japanese for four years in college. Need to refresh myself on it but I haven't had the time.

The_Crow 10-08-2010 03:47 AM

I'm doing a self-study in Japanese. I know Hiragana and Katakana, and the basics in terms of words and phrases, but not much else. I'm afraid I'm as literate as a Japanese kindergartener.

Snowin 10-08-2010 01:00 PM

*pops in*

Hello all~.

B-but chairs have feelings too... 8'( (I say that because I'm used to objects/things/chairs/doors having genders(male, female and neutral) and whatnot)
I also feel that I'm missing the point with this statement...

The_Crow 11-03-2010 10:50 AM

I wanted to share a fun tidbit I came across. There is a browser-based game (that won a very high calibre award last year) called "Fallen London", also known as "Echo Bazaar".

Upon setting up your character it asks if you are [ ] A Lady [ ] A Gentleman [ ] There are things walking around with the faces of squids and you're wasting your time asking me a question as trite as what my gender is?

I paraphrased, but you get the idea. It really is a wonderful free, no-download game and can be found at Echo Bazaar!

I am
Quote:

The Crow, a fascinating and shrewd individual of mysterious and indistinct gender
Huzzah for a game that gives an androgynous option!

MasterOfSpazz 11-03-2010 07:01 PM

Coolioes....I work the night shift.....so I'm up qall night, but I got stuffs I gotta do tomorrow so minimual sleeps for me....yay<----is being sarcastic
But anyways, I have work to do

The Wandering Poet 11-03-2010 08:27 PM

I usually tend to prefer "she" as that's the gender my personality fits the most most of the time. I usually end up being annoyingly vague with gender with people in real life  and it annoys them. I prefer "you people"/"them" for plural/sometimes singular, and just "you" and a few others as just singular. Though granted I do say "He/She", I normally do so based on the avatar and not what their actual gender is.

o.o so uhh... hi?

By the way, I find it entertaining that you have a link to the GSA  I used to post there a long time ago. ^^

ljosberinn 11-05-2010 12:31 PM

Crow, do they also actually use "Lady" and "Gentleman"? Because if so, I definitely approve of that as well. I might not feel comfortable identifying with male or female, but I would identify as a gentleman (at least some of the time..), since those would imply the way you acted, much more than what your physical attributes are.
Of course, I also believe gender as a whole is a performance, but most people will, I think, when asked "male or female?", think of physical characteristics or a combination of sex and gender.
